Are Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality Casinos a Threat to Online Casinos?

Actually, augmented reality casinos have the potential to reshape the gambling landscape entirely. AR can offer a fully engaging experience, transforming the physical aspects we see at casinos into a digital gaming world with all the possible details. I believe the next generation will gravitate toward AR casinos unless existing projects take proactive steps to counter this threat. For example, online casinos need to start collaborating with developers now to explore the possibility of incorporating AR or VR options into their games. I would not call them a threat at the moment. The technology is still very crude and is far from mainstream adoption. It also is not a threat when it can be adopted into the current casino system, as it gets more popular more casinos will integrate it into their system and it will start to get more refined when more investment funds are pumped in as each tries to outdo the other.

I haven't seen any examples of augmented reality casinos and am not really sure how that would add to the experience.  Seems like if anything it would take away from it.  As far as virtual reality casinos...  Aren't those just online casinos?  I feel like virtual reality is just the next step for the internet as we slide down into a metaverse world. 

In any event, I don't think physical casinos are scared just yet.  A massive segment of the population has no interest in augmented reality, virtual reality, or online gaming.

I haven't tried playing with AR/VR yet. The potential of this technology for a great gambling experience and the possibility of playing in an immersive way is fascinating. But I believe it will be an addition to, not a replacement for, what is already available.

There are already existing virtual realty games people go to play in recreational places. It is the next big thing in the technological experience and i will not be surprised to see how the gambling industry will evolve into virtual reality system. One way or another it will surely improve the existence as many individual will want to know how it feels like.

it is the future and it has the possibilty to become one, only if there is a market for it, I mean you have to realize that companies first priority is profit. also, I think VR in it's current state wouldn't attract a lot of new users especially on how expensive it can be for a device that has a very limited use.

And more importantly, have you ever experienced an AR/VR casino? How was it?

No, for me, VR is not worth spending money on at the moment since I most certainly will not use it frequently and there are far better devices that I think is much better to spend on.

Indeed, what Un_rank said is the summary of what I wanted to say. Particularly on the place where he said that the technology can be adopted by any casino, that's true. If the technology goes mainstream and seem like a threat to other casino, they will also adopt and establishe it in their own casino. At the moment, almost every gambler worldwide have not fully ceased from using the normal casino. As a matter of interest, I have not personally used the AR or VR gambling but have only heard of it.

This topic has been discussed so many times and from what I can recall some users were of the opinion that VR might be a good competitor for online casinos while others didn’t really think it will be any significant challenge for Online Casinos and I too have the latter opinion.

From, what I can see thus far despite there being some VR gadgets that were released not too long ago which most of us thought it would do damage to some traditional devices we were familiar but it turned out not to have too much of an impact and that’s because of the cost - Recall that most gamblers are in it for the profits they are getting and if it will cost them twice as much to win the same amount that they normally win with half the money then I don’t see any need for them to switch to something that will reduce their profits.

Some who are after fun and entertainment might choose the VR over traditional online casinos while but majority (profits oriented) are going to stick to the one they are familiar with.

Augmented reality isn't a new technology; it has been in place for a very long time. I'm not sure when casinos implemented it because I have never seen one. However, we are not that far in VR. We still prefer traditional online casinos. But casinos are also evolving with new games and better animations/visuals. Also if VR became a thing then it won't be difficult for an existing casino to implement it in their site itself, so I don't see any competition.

This is not a threat. Infact the idea is dead on arrival. Gambling experience is different from being in an AR or VR. Do a poll now most gamblers would reject the idea. In my estimation, this is associated with too many barriers. First one I can think of is that gamblers with some health conditions and will not be able to use AR or VR to gamble.

Even casinos are using VR headset to provide 3D gambling experience for their users already. No matter how it get complex like the Metaverse, as more people are embracing it and using it, gambling sites will also get involved. You are right about that. They are not a threat.

I do not see the reason to differentiate them.

There is a chance for it, but so far one thing discouraging the growth of this new innovation is the price of these AR/VR glasses that are not cheap. When these glasses become cheap and most gamblers become able to afford it, it may actually become a better preference to gamblers because of the better experience that it may provide. User experience is what drives the online industry, and immediately gamblers have somewhere or a means to get a better experience, it is usually embraced.

Not really. I wouldn’t say VR poses any kind of real threat to online casinos today.

In fact, VR is not even new in the iGaming space. I followed a VR casino project a few years ago — and honestly, it didn’t cause the kind of boom people expected.

Simply put, most gamblers just want to gamble. The tech that surrounds it can be a nice touch, sure — but it's not the core of the experience, and definitely not essential.

Players care more about fast gameplay, smooth UX, trust, and payouts — not strapping on a headset.

A key challenge for casinos would be the high initial cost of investing in these technologies, from platform development to acquiring quality equipment. Additionally, there’s the consumer barrier: not all players are willing to spend money on expensive hardware just to enjoy the experience. Casinos would also need to assess the return on investment, considering that the AR/VR market is still in development. If not handled properly, this technological gamble could pose more risk than reward.

I won't say it's going to be a threat, on the contrary it might bring gaming into another experience, so it might grow the gambling industry. It will be like online casino 2.0 for us. But it is still very far from reality and I don't know if there is already a working version of AR/VR that we can play or test.

So let's wait how it goes, perhaps in the next 5-10 years we might see this technology re-shaping gaming and online player experience. And again, it's going to be a win-win situation for online casinos and players.

More like, it can be a threat to physical casinos since no one would want to go physical casinos anymore if online casinos existed and more importantly if augmented reality and virtual reality were possible.

No, I think there has some casino offering a system with VR or AR for betting.

But still the betting are more higher in regular online casino, sometimes we just want simple things. Not everything needed to be implemented, and what most people want (withdraw fast without issue) or maybe a play or accessing without KYC.

And most of the time, old and traditional gambler doesn't want to break the way they gamble, so they will stay playing traditional base on online gambling. As far as I understand, if we play using  Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality we require to have this gadgets? For gamblers, it doesn't make sense as we need to spend huge amount of money for that hardware and instead just play with that money and you will have the same experience.

But I will agree that with this new technology, it will reshape the gambling industry. But I think it will be more of a co-existence rather than a threat. Or maybe they will invent some kind of hybrid version that online casinos will used as another option for us.

The current technology can't deliver the immersive experience you are talking about, so it's not a threat to online casinos yet.

However, everything is constantly changing and adapting itself to the demands of the environment in real time, therefore it's not different with gambling. Comparing online casinos to physical ones already gives us a good example on that matter. Gambling industry evolved from physical to virtual and in a decade or so it will evolve once again to a new stage, which can be related to virtual reality technology.

In every cases, I don't see it as a threat to online casinos, as they can just implement virtual reality to their services, maybe integrating their platforms to another entrepreneurs and developers' creations, in order to offer a vast and full VR experience with many different features and possibilities for users/customers.
