Wondering if this idea has been explored before, or is a totally nonsense?

Why you people using altcoinstalks to propose something on this forum? Know that this forum is far better than altcoinstalks. If you are good and earn merit, you will join a signature campaign if you want to and that is enough.

Yes you saying the truth @Charles-Tim, though I don't know how they think this could possible to earn some sat using merits, in fact they are wanting to turn the bitcoin forum to something else and whenever a new people comes onboard it would be better they spend time to read things across the forum to understand how forum works before proposing anything of adjustment, and if they  understand it that well i don't they would think of such think over.

If merits were to equate to sats, who is going to pay for the conversion?

The one that want to cash out, obviously. The cool thing is that you can cashsats-out but you cannot buy credits/merits (as it's now)

I guess I still have a lot to learn about how this forum works, how merit are given or earned, etc...

I sense that if sMerits are converted to sats, it will give room for abuse such as exchange of sats among each other including some unsuspecting alt accounts all in the name of sending out merits. Everyone here should work hard, earn merits, rank up and join a campaign if they so want to earn from the forum instead of sending such monetized sMerits that will turn this forum to what we cannot imagine because of greed, just like we see on social media with the senseless contents flooded there.

What if these merits could be valuable sats? Even is 1s Merit = 1 sat, the value is not important, it's more about using bitcoin. Maybe is my influence coming from other platforms, however I believe there would be great value on exchanging and sending real sats to valuable users and interesting contents.

This idea is always applied to forums that are lacking activities, so they try as much as possible to put incentives to attract and keep participants in the platform. Bitcointalk is more than those platforms. When it was supposed to do that, the forum didn't, so it shouldn't be done now.
If smerits are monitored, merit business will be the order of the day. So, this won't be implemented anytime .

This is like saying: "what if likes could be valuable coins". Those two things are completely unrelated. But, if you're up for it, here's a list of Merit received per user. It's going to cost you slightly over 2 million sats to make this dream come true
