How will this help the awkward state of our economy. I feel that these people don't even know what they are doing anymore, but just sitting in offices to steal our money. Is voting a do or die thing NO. Because this is democracy and everyone has the right to vote or not. I am so ashamed of our leaders because they leave the important things and say nonsense that wouldn't add impact to elevate the people out of poverty.

The link you provided is broken, but I'm not surprised; the country isn't working, nothing passes through them anymore; they used to be the most important chamber in the country, dealing primarily with the private and public sectors, but the current house of representatives is being used as a tool against the people who voted for them.

Network data providers and DSTV raised prices by more than 200%, and none of these companies were invited to the chamber to explain the sudden increases.  As usual, they will be bribed.

There was a video circulating this week about one of the house of reps member struggling to move motion, even after being corrected repeatedly. The level of illiteracy in the current chamber is alarming.

this statement alone from the house of representative will prove to you that Nigeria is dying and we don't have leaders they are just bearing the name leaders but they are leading nothing, because I don't know how voting during elections is by force to me this law past by the house representative is ridiculous very annoying, because we are operating democracy and not military government.

wetin be the essence of a bill as this when be say we already know say votes no de count for this country? So what they are saying in essence, is that they will jail those that refuse to vote while the ones that came out to vote will eventually be taken for granted because the votes will not even count as they will still go back to rig it to their favor. even if the bill no go push through, e de totally stupid of them to even consider bringing this kind of bill up.

Most people who have stopped voting only do so because they have given up on the electoral process. if the INEC starts working effectively, and people are sure that after casting their votes that it will manner, a lot of people that have become apolitical will eventually change and vote out the unmerited leaders that are occupying different public offices.

Don't think such bill cannot be signed into law, with the kind of personalities we have as leaders of the national assembly both the house of representative and the Senate, i will not be surprised if such bill is voted by the majority and it's dueling signed into law.
If by divine Providence that this kind of bill is passed, it will actually encourage me the more not to even step an inch out my house on election day to go and vote because such kind of law is thought provoking in it's entirety.

The proposed bill, which was introduced by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, seeks to amend the current Electoral Act 2022 by enforcing compulsory participation in national and state elections.

It proposes that any eligible voter who fails to vote without a valid reason would face a penalty, including a fine of N100,000, a six-month jail term, or both.

Seriously, these guys are telling the Nigerian majority to go to hell with poverty. This is showing that they are obviously out of touch with the Nigerian situation and the man on the street whose livelihood comes daily as he has the physical strength to hussle it out and when same bread winner on the street is sick and couldn't go out in a day then his helplessness and poverty increases. What a rat race we are trailing. So unfortunate.

In the first place, have they asked themselves the reason that majority won't vote? And to try and fix it. They pretend not to know that it is because Nigerians know that their votes don't count at the end of the day because they rig themselves in by force, and so masses would rather not waste their time.

They don't know that more eligible voters would not vote in 2027 if they don't amend the electoral act to include electronic voting and transmission to the irev which can guarantee election transpirancy and not to give room for manual collation by inec which is where they rig the election results from.

In case Tajudeen Abbas don't know, among the factors expected in the amendment of the electoral act includes:

i. Independent candidacy

ii. Electronic transmission not manual

iii. Criminalizing the culture of manipulation and sentencing hoodlums stopping voters to vote their choice candidate (and not the frolicking agenda of victimizing those who were estopped to vote because of irregularities)

iv. Abolishing appointment of INEC by the president but allowing civil society groups to nominate 3/5 candidates that are apolitical where the chairman will be voted from by professional bodies in Nigeria, like medical board, judiciary, engineering society etc.

They are really out of touch with the system and that is why inflation and poverty are at an alarming rate in Nigeria.

I don't really know how to react to this because it's quite funny and st*pid at the same time.
Just imagine those old men feeling too bored, and proposing on putting people in jail for not voting, and at the same time, NANS threatening to protest against it. How does this even concerns the Education sector. Are there no organizations/representative that ought to fight against unfavorable laws?.
Instead of NANS to fight for a better educational system in public universities and good yearly budget to the educational sector, there are busy doing the job of other organizations.

And, it's a big shame to person that raised such motion. How can you represent people, and suggest something like that, knowing fully well that the people you represent have the right to do whatever they want.

There have been stupid proposals like this that I have seen in the past but later were not passed to Senate to also vote on it. This is a very foolish proposal and I think other people in the house should not be so stupid like the person that proposed this. I believe it will not be passed.

I agree that such kind of bill will not even make it to a second reading in the house of assembly, because not everyone who can vote has access to voting centres or are sane enough to do so when they aren't clear in the procedures and requirements for voting during any election.
Besides, so far, elections in this country has been more of selection and taking it by force, rather than elections and rightful results.

This is just shameful, being a Nigerian is a shame.our leaders has really ridiculous us. They bring every nonseto public for the world to laugh at us, a country with senseless leaders is not worthy to be proud of. Well there is nothing that surprises me in Nigeria anymore, Because there is no remedy for this country, How can people that is responsible to create law and order be the once destroying everything in a country, My question is of what change will our vote make when INEC is there to rig election vote in favour of Their preferred Candidate. The House Of Reps Members and the Senate House are bunch of illiterate and old men who do not know their left and right and direction. This Tinunu Government is the worst we have had in this country, everything keeps getting worse each day that passes.
