Interesting enough Trump could have avoided all this discussion with just a simple word "yes".
After all, he sworn to uphold the constitution of the United States when he was officially inaugurated.

And yet, I don't understand what Trump is trying to get out of this by avoiding to explicitly say he will uphold and protect the constitution. He has nothing to win out making people to believe he is going to use power to become a tyrant or something similar. As if he does not even care to hide anything anymore.

The best way might be to have about 30 of your people go to court with you. Then, when you demand the judge to be right with you in some way, if he isn't/doesn't, 25 of the thirty can later form a grand jury and indict the judge. After all, judges are not kings. They have to act legally, too.

Trump was simply being honest. Some of the Constitution can be set aside by contracting of people with government. There is law that states that it cannot all be set aside. So, people always have the right to 'redeem' their freedom.

I don't only read "boring" historical books.
The Constitution and the amendments were designed for ordinary people to understand --- It would take a little over an hour (the language may take getting used to--like when reading the bible). I have deep faith in the god given equality of every human, and in a humans inalienable right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness (I would add dignity).
I don't have faith in humanities current ability to evolve beyond bigotry based biases: because we are not being taught real history or critical thinking skills.
And while America's government has historically struggled with its main function in protecting those rights... it is now completely failing.
