Should this happen with the forum? Well, technical issues are meant to happen, which is why I reported it.

It's been over a year since I encountered this kind of error with the forum, and I thought it was finally fixed, as it warned me of an initial submission since then to avoid duplicate posts. It mostly happens when 1. the user's internet connection is poor or 2. when the forum is unresponsive/slow, especially during downtimes.



Admin, please work on it if possible, and a moderator should please delete one of the posts.

I don't  think it's  a bug..there should be a warning  prompting the post has already been submitted but the user can still go ahead with submitting anyways .. it will probably  get reported and one of it will be taken down,  unless left unnoticed.

Both post was submitted at different time, which means that the member must have clicked submit and encountered a network bridge but the post already submitted despite the network error without him noticing it. He thought the post didn't submit and clicked on refresh which automatically submitted the post again.

 I know that was what happened to me when I first experienced this error, so what I did was, anytime I try to submit a post and network failed, before I refresh it again, I always go and check on the thread if the post already submitted on that first try. The user can delete the second post or edit it and indicate "error, delete."

It's not a bug and nothing to be worked on there; the user was not observant enough to notice the error. If you have reported the duplicate to moderators, it will get deleted soon.

The post time frame is almost 2 minutes different, which could either be the first time the person was trying to submit an entry, encountered a network error and did not check if the post was submitted or not, or they later hit the submit button again and did not check through the thread to see who was on the top.

Yes, this is not a bug, for this warning of this post has been posted before; I can't recall when last I saw that. I have made this type of mistake before on the gambling board, where I submitted my post twice. When I wanted to submit the second post, I was notified that there was a new post on that thread and not that I had submitted the post before. It was after I noticed it was also my post. The good thing about the gambling board is that a post can get deleted immediately after you post it.

As I already stated by others above, there is no bug here.

The user has submitted the post twice and there's a even a difference between the texts.
In the first post, there's a typo and the word "matter" has wrongly been written as "mater" and that typo has been fixed in the second post.

I've reported it, and you can too. This is clearly a user-side issue, not a forum bug. When someone tries to submit the exact same post again, the forum gives a duplicate post warning. It’s really the user’s fault if they keep resubmitting without noticing their post went through, just a bit careless on their part.

Why not leave this to those who are saddled with the responsibility to decide? I called it a bug because the error I usually see, warning me of duplicate posts, does not allow me to post the duplicate post at all.

Besides, how about the forum not allowing a duplicate post whatsoever and repeating the warning every time you try? Or do you think it is not possible? That's one of the reasons for my post.

That's possible, but I've posted multiple posts before without a single warning from the forum. Mine was even about 7 duplicate posts or more before I detected it.

And why must a forum allow a duplicate post to be published in the first place? Can't it reject it outright without the possibility of resubmission? That needs fixing.

Can I say this is the problem of the SMF software, the problem why this duplicate is possible to be posted in my opinion is because of the forum doesn’t tracks the article as same, might be taking it as new discussion and that’s why we usually see posts been merged after all if they’re different discussions. Not allowing double submissions might be OK but might be comes with its error again. Whereas in this case the post wasn’t the same so the forum might have accounted it as another post.

But come to think of it if you make this mistake of posting twice in succession you can immediately delete one of them and not waiting for the 24 hour threshold, this I have encountered before and also did delete immediately

Exactly, we can PM the OP to take action in deleting the post, that is why i like most when you post and still remain on the same page to be able to see the image of what you have posted, unlike when after positing it returns you back to the main board, i have also experienced something like this if i don't forget and some other members had same experience, which is mostly as a result of network glitch as some have already pointed out.

In this situation it may be that his network was poor when he was trying to make a post and in cause of that it obstructed his posting and him not knowing it has already been posted tapped the post button again and that was why the time from the first post and the second was not much, however he made a mistake for not checking his post after being posted if he had checked it he would have noticed the mistake and then delete one, let's try not to be in a rush when making a post in other to avoid mistakes like this.

Never experienced that myself, so I’m pretty sure it’s not a forum issue, it’s more of a user-side problem.

I agree with what was said above: maybe their internet was slow, and the post didn’t go through, so they hit post again. That can happen. In that case, the duplicate can just be deleted to keep things clean.

Thanks for pointing it out, but it’s definitely not a forum problem.

OP this is a network error, I encountered such errors last week and didn't even notice it for about a couple of days or so before I was checking my post history and saw that a post I made was duplicated at different time intervals so what you need do next time is either to report it to mod. to delete one of the duplicated posts or rather send a PM to the user to do so. I have done a PM for a user like that in the past and he appreciated it so much. It's not every issue that should be brought to meta when it can be handled without drawing many attention.

Understand that this is not a forum problem, it is a network problem from the side of the user. The forum already warns of a Post that has already been submitted but you can't expect it to keep giving same warning after a limited time interval.

This is not a bug of the forum, it is as a result of poor network connection. I have experienced it before when I'm at a location where the network is poor and I click send yet not convince it has gone because it it keeps loading. When I click send again, and it finally go, it is then it dawn on me that the first one actually went through. What I do in such situation is to edit one to "to be deleted after 24hrs" so that other forum users will know it was a a mistake that will be deleted.

It will be best if the forum admin or developers could come up with a prompt or error message that stops you from making duplicate posts which are sometimes as a result of poor internet connection or sluggish site host at a point in time. Many members are innocent of this mistakes and while it is good to suggest that a moderator brings down such duplicated copy, it will be best if the system sets a minimum of 60 seconds or more to allow an exact post from being reposted in the same topic after an error must have disrupted it from being posted in the first place, or there should be an automatic detection of duplicates and an automatic removal of such from thr system once it comes from same member on the same post thread in the same form.

Users can easily see a post that they posted twice or more easily. Then they can also easily just delete the post. This forum gives users to easily click on delete to remove any of their posts from a thread. This type of mistake can not happen to me because I can easily know and remove it.

The problem should be about topics. Also I can easily see it too, maybe while some people may not but the post can be reported and be removed. In most cases, before I want to report the topic, the OP would have edited one of the post to del or delete and likely he would have reported the post himself to be deleted.

This is true, it can happen if the network is not good and if post is not going through fast after you click on 'post'.

This is a minor issue or mistake which you should have simply pmed the user and call his or her attention to it rather than creating a thread here, this is a very common mistake which any user can make and this has nothing to do with the forum..

I have had similar experiences where I mistakenly click the submit button multiple times and my post end up becoming two, I notice and delete the other one immediately, in this case, this user did not notice the mistake, best you should have done is pm, and not make call public attention to a mistake as simple as this, saying this incase next time.

Unfortunately, many of you didn't understand my reason for opening the thread, it's beyond the writer. I PM people when I see their errors to fix it, so it's nothing. But this thread, even if it's my post that had that error, I would have done the same. Did I blame the writer for it? I reported an error, not the writer, I too can make that mistake, so stop painting it as if someone targeted anyone.

You don't need to PM them but you are free to do it if you want. If after sending them PM and they did neither reply you nor delete their repeated post, you can report those posts to moderators. I am very sure that moderators will delete such repeated posts.

Above replies show you a correct point that it is not a forum bug, but it bad posting style from user side. Forum has a warning message that is in red color so it is noticeable enough. Posters ignored those warnings and continued to post, but it's not too bad. After they clicking on post, and their post was actually published, I believe they ignored one more step: don't read their post after posting.

If they spend some seconds to glance (no need to read) at their published post, I believe that they will see duplications and delete one of repeated posts.

Both steps are all from user side and posters can change their posting style to make their posting better.
