Really I guess the benefit to Mark of going to the US and having bankruptcy protection could help him keep some domain names that could be seized from him in the united states. Maybe he has some bank accounts.
But, any Bitcoin that he may have hidden could be hidden as long as he does not talk.
I would bet that Mark will not appear in the US. Otherwise Federal Marshalls will be waiting for him when he leaves the deposition.

I served someone with a lawsuit at a deposition. So it is a really convenient way to track down someone who wants to hide. Of course the scamming guy I sued then proceeded to file bankruptcy to get out of his obligations to me.

He may not be going to the US, but the judge made it clear that if he doesn't, Mt. Gox doesn't get bankruptcy protection in the US. That means US-based lawsuits can proceed.
If he does go to the US, the FBI and the SEC will probably want to talk to him.
His big troubles are in Japan. The "mtgoxrecovery.com" people filed a statement alleging fraud with the Tokyo District Court handling the bankruptcy. That derailed the schedule for the bankruptcy. Mt. Gox probably won't get "civil rehabilitation" - they'll get one of the harsher forms of bankruptcy in Japan. One that kicks Karpeles out and puts a trustee in.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police are still investigating, and now some ex-Mt. Gox employees are talking. The Mt. Gox coverup is coming apart.
At least things are moving in the right direction. Even if it seems to take forever.... Who will take care of his cat? (The wife and kids probably have plenty of money)

There were a lot of people on here who were saying "just give Gox more time" after they stopped US dollar withdrawals last June. Remember the "two week hiatus on withdrawals" that never ended? Mt. Gox customers were far too patient. I was telling people to get out as soon as the "hiatus on withdrawals" started. If a real brokerage did that, they'd be out of business within hours. That's what happened to Lehman. In the Tokyo bankruptcy court, as soon as a creditor of Mt. Gox actually showed up with a lawyer and filed a petition alleging fraud, things started happening fast. Nobody had been filing complaints against Mt. Gox with the courts and cops in Japan. That's why nothing happened.

its not a prosecution case. its a deposition. its not even going to be held in a court room. PLEASE read the source material and dont come to unfounded conclusions.
he has to answer questions in regards to what he has said about how the funds disappeared, vs the evidence gathered from other sources. the result is not jail time. but whether he will be granted or denied bankruptcy protections.
again can the FUD spreaders get your cataracts sorted or declare yourself 100% blind. so that the rest of us can ignore the news that you have read.. and instead read the proper factual news
Do you really believe he would be allowed to leave the US after landing there? He might not go. He must be paranoid that they'll arrest him for something or other. As we know the USA loves the "War on Drugs" whats the bet he would get grabbed on SR related stuff. Lets them seize the remaining BTC if they get hold of him and he has the keys. They can then sell said BTC under their asset seizure rules as a proceed of drug crime. Actually the more i think about it the less i want him anywhere near the USA. It will likely make things even worse for those trying to recover anything from Gox. We now have proof and they have admited over 200k coins are still safe. Lets not loose those too in our thirst for blood.

Someone might wonders if Silkroad was operated by the FBI to sell the seized drugs and then make the story about seizing the BTC profit, thus laundering the money. But Mt.Gox?

Trough the mutual legal treaty they could force the japanese police anytime to arrest him and extradite him. But for what? The international investigation for money laundering, drugs and tax evasion will take years. Just check the e-gold, Liberty Reserve or any big child porn investigation for comparison to get a feeling for the magnitude. And it's not (only) Mark that they want, but the customers (or some of them).

Maybe the coins were used to pay for his imported car, robot, 3D printer and company expenses.

It's here. The day that we have all longed for. Mark Karpeles (Mt.Gox CEO) has been ordered by a judge to come to the United States to answer questions regarding the collapse of the infamous Mt.Gox exchange. The court hearing will take place on April 16, 2014 Dallas Texas. Let's see what happens next! Isn't this exciting?! Will justice be served? Read the full article here: http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/04/01/us-bitcoin-mtgox-karpeles-idUSBREA3021920140401--- Thoughts & Opinions Anyone? ---I thought they said that the Mt. Gox is one of the most trusted exchange site of bitcoin. Just do have heard a lot about them though but I'm not quiet sure. However, never tried their service since I dont have any BTC to exchange
