The worse of it is that we hardly would have an ordinary Nigerian say this right now with the current insecurity situation in the country, saying he is leaving his job in town to retire to his farm in the village. Such person will go hungry because the farm that was suppose to provide food for you will be overrun by herders.

The issue of insecurity is quite alarming in Nigeria and that has affected agriculture in the land making hardship to become unbearable as it stands now. Agricultural products use to be our main export in the recent past but what has happened now is that politicians have become indifferent to the challenges facing the system. Here we see a Vice president from Tanzania retiring back to his father's farm but same is not happening in Nigeria unfortunately.  Asking our so called politicians to retire back to farming is like handling a doctors job to a lawyer, it's impossible to achieve and even though there's a possibility, the majority won't consider that as an option, what happened to looting public funds, what happened to deceiving the masses on the media and use divert public funds to their anonymous business outside the country cause those are what lots of them are good at.

 The government would only advise people concerning that area but you won't see them leading by example, same way they'll advice the public to prioritize government schools but send their kids abroad to study, until our politicians start leading by example I don't think that things would work out well in Nigeria.

Some political leaders still retire to farm after they finish their tenure in the public offices and this time around, they do it with more passion. They tend to succeed farther through this farm work as they’ve already built a connection in the government which allows them to grow their farms faster, and expand their sells in and out of the country. Don’t be deceived that most of them don’t go back to farming, they do that and also use that to cover up for their retirement objectives.

We have seen the former president Buhari also claiming to have gone back to farming and hopes to continue feeding himself and the family through this farm. When we talk about security in the farm, these guys have their farms secured in the most best ways and have no issue with insecurity where they farm. Farming is rich and they know it, so they venture into it in a more mechanized way but most of them don’t show it.

You seem not to be abreast with the insecurity situation in the country or the content of the thread. Farming is a choice no doubt but the point is how many people who have the passion for farming are freely doing it because their lives are not safe anymore, this is the focus of the thread and not really that a VP most farm. The politicians have not created enabling environment for people to partake in the hobby that they desire. Bandits and herdsmen are always clashing with farmers because of the attacks on the farms, hideout for kidnappers. Most people that farm now can only do that if their farms are fenced with gates and those are just small farms that only produce for a household. This is why there is scarcity of food with it attendant high prices.

I understand what you are saying, however you should have been very specific on the security and the part of the country you meant because you cannot just say insecurity in farming when there are several other places that doesn't have an issues on security in farming, so since you have highlighted Bandits and Herdsmen you should have just refer it to the North or the few states the country knows that those people operate, so actually those places are rough for the common farmers because almost every month there is always a victim of farmers and if not that those people had nothing else but farm they could have stop going their farm land because of how is unsafe for them.

OP your heading did not match much with the content but for the problem of insecurities from the herds men who invade people's farm and vandalize their crops, i blame that on the government because since the herds men started terrorizing and killing farmers the government have not really condemned their behavior with actions. How can people be so wicked to invade on farmland of the poor people in the society without showing signs of remorse.

Talking about politicians retiring back to farming, do you think that a politician needs to work on his farm by himself before you know that some of them owns their personal farms. There are politicians i know even though they haven't gotten high profile appointments or offices but they have farms of their own. Moreover, why do they need to retire at the expense of their political career, no politician can ever do that.

I understand the point you want to make, Op but you're diverting. Politicians retiring to farm has no value to our IGP or make us better. Because even professors of Agriculture department doesn't have a farm land in this country. In the part of the work we see Farmers as poor and less privileged ones, the country has no plan and support for farmers.

I think we should focus on things that will add value to our economy, not politicians retiring to farm, even former president Buhari retired to farm, what's has he farm land produced? Nothing except for his house whole.

The "thing" called Nigerian politician doesn't have a second address, it doesn't have a career, what it knows is to loot and wait for another election to contest for political position and loot again. What we should be talking about is an industrialize and mechanized pattern of farming, not the peasant farmers who can barely feed a single community with his farm produce.  

Individuals should take it upon themselves and go into massive industrialize and mechanize farming, because they are the ones to drive this economy on a private level, apart from the fact that the North has mass land, there are areas in the Southern part of Nigeria that are not ravage by bandit where farming can also go on while we wait for security agencies to sort out the issue of insecurity in the North. So the idea of farming should be private driven, until the day the government would want to give out soft loans to assist farmers.

None, I do not think there is any politicians that has interest in a farm to retire to instead they will use all the money that they have stolen to start up a company that they will be overseeing when they retire from politics. I have not seen any politicians that wants to go back to farming. They can claim to be farmers but they are not the ones going to the farms instead they have many farm workers that do everything for them then they make the money. The have upgraded the way the farm are being done but the numbers of politicians doing this is not big. The challenges of farming is increasing because of the increase in insecurity and untill insecurity is fought then won in the country, farming will keep being a dangerous career to take. Farmers do not make enough money and have high risk of kidnappings, sexual assault for woman and other bad things.

Indeed, na real lost glory agriculture be for dis awa Naija so. I remember wen we dey very influential and stand gidigbam for palmoil matter. Dat era na so we go dey see palm trees almost every corner for east so. Most of those trees dem don fall dem now and no betta plan to replant dem. We take crude oil do focus and neglected wetin give us money and fame those days. Abi na coco matta we wan yarn?

Insecurity Dey really disturb framers right now, I go talk say na challenges wey farmers Dey face now be that, but make I no lie you, money Dey agriculture, if you get better place wey u wan do am, money really Dey but na just challenges wey dey.

Influential men in the country are the politicians, they have power in the active welfare of the country. Nigerian politicians can not retire back to their various farms, it's definitely going to be a lengthy rough one for them because it makes absolutely no sense, not after they're done embezzling public funds which was crucially meant to exert crucial actions on the nation's budget but what are we seeing? Nothing coming from them.

Our country is in her current ruins and nothing have been done about reviving her name back to the top. This is no longer a peaceful nation, complain here and there. No, I seriously disagree with this bold statement here, yes it's true that we have security concerns going on in the country, but not everywhere in the country as you are making it looks like, some people can sleep very well with their eyes close because peace and security of their farm products is secured, not everywhere we have security issues.

This is also false, buhari our past immediate president has a large farm that he is presently running in his home town duara, even though he has labourers working for him, the reason am bringing this up is for you to know that something like this is also happening in Nigeria, just that the media wouldn't focus on such because the bad deed of our politicians has overshadowed their good deeds and what they are presently doing, so we also have politicians that is also farming in large scale, just that they have people in place working for them, and if you are in position, you will do the same, you will definitely employ labourers to do it for you not you going there yourself.

Retiring back to the farm is not just something you do without having proper plan about it, you have to plan, set out resource in place, ensure that you at least factor in everything variables including the insecurity on ground as well as plans that will help you soar through the insecurity. Na nation that's also facing the agricultural sector is completely void of some form of security threat. There are a lot of threat which are risk to the success of your agricultural pursuits but still, we have people that are doing well in the agricultural sector which means that you can also do well if you want to.

In most southern part of the country, the security issue isn't bad to the extent that you can't carry out agricultural investments. There are lands that are in places that have little security threat and that are lying dormant, we tend to give excuses even when we are the ones that neglect the land resources that are around us. The simple truth is that even with the security issue we are facing, any body that wants to retire back to farming can still do so and do it well as long as he has a proper plan on ground.

This is a farming business that can be very profitable, the former president and myself are both in support of farming as a business that can provide peace of mind for those who choose to farm. Yet, the idea that all the young people can come out of the digital world and rely on farming is unrealistic. This world, as it is today, heavily depends on technology and digital innovation so that there should be space for young people to grow in that sector.

At the same time, I strongly concur that the government should not only be there to protect farmers but also to help them start businesses such as provision of seeds and fertilizers among other necessary needs to sustain a business properly. According to me, what is actually required is a balance to develop the traditional agriculture as well as at the same promoting the digital economy to help both the sectors support each other.
