What I mean is, if everything remains about the same as it is now, and people keep mining even though their reward is small for finding the next block, what year will the last bitcoin be mined?

That should be roughly around 2140... Makes sense though since the reward period block drops exponentially each halving event that passes (the four year bull cycle per say). I think I've made a post about this in the past also explaining how the reward period block of the four year cycles is actually a Geometric sequence where the next term is basically half the previous term.

If you are someone who likes to play around with math a little you could hit up a formula pretty fast though. After they've all been mined miners should then depend on fees alone for their rewards.

As far as I understand, the last Bitcoin will never be mined...

There are 21,000,000 Bitcoins that can potentially be mined in the world. But only 20,999,999 Bitcoins will ever be mined (completely, that is, entirely). This will happen in 2140.

But even after 2140, a certain (small) number of Satoshi will not be mined by miners.

Also, a very interesting theoretical question: what will happen to the Bitcoin network after 2140? Will Bitcoin become a full-fledged protocol for transferring value in virtual space? If the answer is yes, then how grandiose an entity will this virtual space become after 2140?

No one reading this thread on the Bitcointalk forum will live to see 2140. However, it would be interesting for all of us to find ourselves in that distant time (in the middle of the 22nd century) for at least a minute!

This question has been long answered before in the forum, once bitcoin gets almost all mined the work of the miners do not stop there the miners will need to continue mining blocks that will contain Bitcoin for transactions but the incentives will be limited to only the fees getting from the transactions. In fact mathematically if we look at this halving of bitcoin and the remaining bitcoin left to mine, I think around 2036 halving the remaining bitcoin will be just 1% and to me miners will only be getting rewards from fees then, will the fees be enough incentive to keep so many miners still mining? Because blocks are consistently mined faster than every 10 minutes, I predict that the last satoshi will actually be mined about 12 years early, so around 2128.

It is possible for a legendary member to forget such information especially when you know you may not even be alive when that will happen. Apart from forgetting, you can calculate it and somehow doubt the answer which can make you create a topic like this one. Being a legendary member here does not mean one knows everything about bitcoin because some full members may even know about bitcoin more than some legendary, it all depend on interest because this forum is vast and the knowledge here is big. It took you going to Google to get the answer, whereas there are some members here at your level that know the answer without searching it up.

Legendary members are acknowledged by their efforts put into the forum and questions / matters that are going in it - they may not know everything or more than somebody else, no matter the rank, so it's okay - but yeah, the question could have been searched easily.

It would be sometime in 2140, however we never know exactly when.
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Controlled_supply

We can not know exact halving days of past Bitcoin block reward halvings and it's harder to predict exact day of last bitcoin to be mined by Bitcoin miners. It's too far future and there are many things for changes.

https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/bitcoin/bitcoin-halving
Quote
What is Bitcoin Halving?

Bitcoin has a total supply of 21 million. The underlying code ensures that only 21 million bitcoins will ever exist. Bitcoin’s finite supply is a strong economic statement and supports its value system.

Bitcoin is distributed through mining. The 21 million bitcoins in existence are scheduled to be mined through the year 2140. That is, the last bitcoin is expected to be mined in the year 2140.

Agreed, many questions, easier ones especially, would be found this way, but the forum answers those and harder ones too.

Also, a very interesting theoretical question: what will happen to the Bitcoin network after 2140? Will Bitcoin become a full-fledged protocol for transferring value in virtual space? If the answer is yes, then how grandiose an entity will this virtual space become after 2140?

This question has been long answered before in the forum, once bitcoin gets almost all mined the work of the miners do not stop there the miners will need to continue mining blocks that will contain Bitcoin for transactions but the incentives will be limited to only the fees getting from the transactions. In fact mathematically if we look at this halving of bitcoin and the remaining bitcoin left to mine, I think around 2036 halving the remaining bitcoin will be just 1% and to me miners will only be getting rewards from fees then, will the fees be enough incentive to keep so many miners still mining? I would say for me that’s a myth for now.
The only time I am more concerned is when bitcoin mining ends in 2140 and the miners are left with only fees as incentives, this would be hard, but I want to believe that Satoshi has planned for those times from the very beginning. As long as new bitcoin is still mined, no matter the fraction, it would suit well since if bitcoin price continues to go up and by then, bitcoin price is up to $300k, then the block reward of 0.396025 becomes $118,807.5 per block which is still adding up.

The fees would be so big by that time that I wouldn't be worrying about the matter that much Wink

It will be an interesting time because I don’t see the fees actually been able to sustain the miners then because a much higher fee will only discourage transactions through the bitcoin network, Bitcoin will have its volatility reduced then but will be very well over the $300k region in my opinion, from now to 2140 is a whole 115 years apart and with the history of how bitcoin is pumping we could even be around $1m per bitcoin then 1sats/vbyte wouldn’t still be much if it is the fee then.

One of my major guesses for this period is that some miners might drop out if mining isn’t profitable again and could possibly reduce the hashrate power if I am not mistaken, but let’s not even think about then because it is seriously a long time from now and most of us wouldn’t be here then
