I like that statement, not because you are not employed means you'll not going to work hard most of the being self-employed consume most of your time, you need to push more or grind more in order to earn decently, though the benefits is when you make things successfully then you can harvest the fruit of your hard work by accumulating money from the investment or business that you established.

What I understand by working for yourself is that you don't have a boss or someone  to detect how you do your business. A taxi driver can be working for himself when he drives his own cars and determined when he gets to go to work, come back or skip work for the day. When you don't have to wait on someone to pay you your monthly salary then you aren't working for anyone but yourself. Working for yourself isn't good for all individuals because some of us are lazy that we become not serious when we are working for ourselves.

This is why most self employed business people aren't successful because they're not focused and determination to succeed. Honestly this is more deeper than I thought and I must say that I don't think anyone is actually working for themselves because even the so called business owners, or hotel owners, or taxi owners at some point don't even follow instructions from their from their clients rather they have some certain companies rules and regulations which of course most customers may not be comfortable with, and there is no profitability without certification of their customers over times and that is to say in other words no one is actually working for themselves because their must be cooperation between both parties for fulfillment to take place.

Traders are not actually adding value anywhere, apart from vaguely helping to value businesses with buy and sell orders. Traders require volatility in the market in order to make the most money, when everything is stable and very little is moving, it becomes harder to make money. Self-employed people are working for their customers, which means that you are right. Self-employed people aren't fully "working for themselves", but I guess that behind the words "working for myself" everyone means not having a boss. That's how capitalism works. It has a double meaning the one you quoted and you are both correct.  There is no need to argue on this since the one you quoted simply states the literal meaning of working for yourself, for personal needs support, or for survival.  We work for  ourself simply means we work for money to support ourself which is also the same when we are self-employed, its that this time we are our own boss but still working to support our daily needs.
