Well what you said to your friend is the truth, not everyone gamble to make money through gambling, some gamblers are different from others, if others are gambling to make money you can be gambling to be entertained. However, from the tone of this post I can say that the person don't want to gamble because he's skeptical if he will make money from it or not he will also feel cheated when he loses. Actually if you gamble in his presence and out of luck you won a huge amount of money (like the Jackpot) he will want to try his own link if he might win.

I don't know exactly what to call it but let's just say it's more like having an optimistic view of winning no matter the odds or chances. Basically gamblers placing bets know they could either win or lose but still place it anyway because they have that belief that they could win. However sometimes it plays out the opposite way. Some people continue to lose and still continue to place bets regardless.
This is where the idea of knowing what to do comes in as a gambler you should be able to keep track of your betting life or streak consecutive losses could mean you should take a break.

I even see it differently. If it's gambling you could think of in that slightest opportunity over there, then I advise you to check yourself, you might be getting addicted to it, fun or not. Don't get me wrong, gambling for fun is not bad, but we should constantly examine ourselves too, so that a hobby does not graduate to an addiction.

Gambling is for fun which means that whoever is gambling for fun already knows that he will run at loss but he's doing it for pleasure. Yeah, it should really be for fun, and so with that money, then we should think that we would lose that already. But then again, there are gamblers who really hope that gambling can change their lives that's why even if they know that it is a game of chance, they are more willing to take that risk.

So with that, we can't really generalized gamblers here. Sure they can say that they gamble for entertainment only, but at the end of the day, it is still hard earn money right? Unless you have like a printing press of money which is not going to happen. With that, it varies as well, different folks, different strokes. Gambling is risky and a game of chance like you said but you can just liken it to something you do with small amount of money just for fun. Sometimes that small amount of money could turn into something very big for you, that is why it is good to take the risk of losing that small money that will not affect you in any way and hope to win but if you lose it, you simply accept it. You are not supposed to gamble with money that will make you feel bad and miserable, this is not what gambling requires else you will be damaging your emotions and peace of mind.

Sorry but this is rather a noob question, what do you think? Is there really any gambler out there who gambles and does not know that gambling is a game of chance?

Risk is everywhere and this is one thing many people are failing to understand, going to bed in the night is a risk because you are not even sure of waking up in the morning, yet, everyone will always take the chance of going to bed in the night to sleep, what's the guarantee that you will wake up in the morning? None..

So, someway somehow, we all are taking risks, and what differentiates this risks is that we are aware of some of the risk we are taking, but for some others, we are not aware of it, most people, or let me say everyone who gambles understands that gambling is a game of chance, yet they still gamble, that is life, we can never stop taking risk for it is one of the essence of our existence.

Well gambling is a game of everything, fun, entertainment, income all depending on how one sees it but regardless before going into it you must be ready to take up the risks and chances that are involve in it. And again you should know that people see gambling different just as your friend now it seems to him that it's something that drains your habits are not been controlled properly.
