If someone is struggling to meet their basic needs to live, then investing in Bitcoin is not mandatory for them, and even investing is not mandatory for anyone. However, for those who want to invest, especially those who are interested in investing in Bitcoin, the biggest obstacle to investing is patience and lack of long-term planning.
I don't agree with this statement of yours buddy. If someone is struggling to meet his basic needs, he have no business investing in Bitcoin because he will later fall back to his investment if he went ahead to invest when he can't even take care of himself. What he should be doing is looking for a better source of discretionary income, so that he can invest, once he is able to figure out his discretionary income.

Furthermore, the biggest obstacle to everyone that want to invest in Bitcoin is not patience or long term planning as you are saying, but figuring out your discretionary income, because once you can figure that out, starting your investment will be a  lot easier, because you can learn other things when while investing.

No @Umulala-alala Don't make discretionary income mandatory for Bitcoin. There are many who don't have discretionary income like a student who is still studying. These guys accumulate Bitcoin with the funds they have. They accumulate Bitcoin by saving money they get from their parents, they don't have discretionary income, they are learning about Bitcoin and buying within their economic capability because they have discretionary funds. In the future, these guys will be more motivated to accumulate Bitcoin when they enter the job and earn money.
Before you start buying bitcoin you must have discretionary income and without discretionary income you don't need to start buying bitcoin because you only put your self into financial pressures by using money that is meant for your basic needs. Even if you are a student and you don't have discretionary income, you are not to buy bitcoin. If you used money for your essentials needs like your house rent, school fees and money for your daily upkeep to buy bitcoin. You will have no option to sell your bitcoin when the need for this money arise , which you may even sell at loss.  Using discretionary income will help you to remain consistent and to avoid making decisions based on emotions.
You will need to have a discretionary fund to start Bitcoin. Accumulation Bitcoin while you are a student may not be a risk for you because you will not have to worry about your daily expenses. Your parents are taking care of all the expenses of the family. Since you do not have to worry about meeting the basic needs of the family, there will be no risk of withdrawing your Bitcoin holdings.

So you cannot tell anyone that they should not buy Bitcoin. If a student wants to develop the habit of accumulation Bitcoin during their studies, do not stop them.

Do not argue blindly because Umulala-alala is right.
For anyone to invest in bitcoin and be successful, he needs to invest only from his discretionary income, so if you are talking about how some students are saving up and investing with it, don't you know that the money they were able to save is a left over money after they have finish sorting out their basic needs?
What's the difference between that money and a discretionary income if I may ask?
Because it seems like you don't really know the true definition of a discretionary income, that's why you are arguing blindly.

You are not getting into unnecessary arguments. You need to understand the difference between discretionary income and discretionary funds. You are advocating as if you are very experienced in Bitcoin, even though you registered on the forum in April this year. Do not consider yourself to be an expert because no one is forced or compelled to accumulate Bitcoin. If you don't like someone's advice, don't tell them they don't know the definition of discretionary income. Know the forum rules and educate yourself.

Using discretionary income will help you to remain consistent and to avoid making decisions based on emotions.
That will depend on if you have a reliable source of discretionary income. There's no way you can accumulate bitcoin consistently unless you have a reliable source of discretionary income. Some investors has a source of income but they struggle to figure out their discretionary income to invest.  The reason is that they spend too much on unnecessary things. If they can reducing their expenditures on things that they don't actually need, they will be able to figure out their discretionary income and invest in bitcoin. If they allocate those money that they spend on things that they don't need and invest it in bitcoin, I believe it will serves them a greater purpose over time.
Only if discretionary income is generated for investing in bitcoin, then a person can invest. And there is no obligation to generate discretionary income regularly from a regular income source to maintain the continuity of investment. Because everyone's income is not regular, it is not possible for everyone to generate discretionary income regularly. And accumulating bitcoin consistently does not mean buying the same amount of bitcoin every week. If the income is irregular, discretionary income will be generated irregularly. In that case, it may not be possible to buy bitcoin with the same amount every week or month. Even if there is not enough fund in a week, bitcoin dca may not be possible for that week. Therefore, an investor has to see whether discretionary income is being generated after meeting the necessary expenses according to his income status. Even if it is generated irregularly, there is no problem. He can invest in bitcoin very naturally. For me, the important part of bitcoin investment is to create a cashflow management system through which a person can continue accumulation for the next 4 to 10 years or more according to his financial capacity. Even if it is irregular, there is no problem to invest in bitcoin .

And who do you think you are to be lecturing me here?
Or don't you know that someone can have prior knowledge on a particular subject before registering here?
Or you think that this forum is the only place someone can attain knowledge?

If that is how your thinking faculty is, then you are still very naive or better still ignorant on so many things because you can't just assume that you know more than someone, just because you came here before him, that's short sighted if you reason like this in this 2026 we found ourselves.

You can get discretionary income from the leftover of your income after taking care of your basic needs and monthly expenses or from if money is being gifted to you on an event or celebration or even at work in order to motivate you. You can also get discretionary income from winning a jackpot or the sales of an abandoned property that is losing value overtime.

An investors regular income is not his discretionary income and sometimes the discretionary income doesn’t always come from our regular income or salary at work, the discretionary income can be figured out from various sources and what is mostly important in this aspect is that an investor have sorted out his basic financial needs first and at that moment any other funds that comes his way can be used as a discretionary income because he doesn’t have any essential needs to use the said funds for at that moment.

That’s good , let me add to it . Yes, discretionary income doesn’t always come from our usual salary and stuff. It’s a form of a leftover , money thats left aside after all basic essentials need has been met . And also discretionary income can also come in form of gift and stuff too , discretionary income is where emergency funds and backup funds are all generated from .

Investing is all about planning , and planning will help you to know how to allocate your earnings properly. That’s where many investor are getting it wrong that’s why they usually endup having weak hand . In the name of being aggressive end up accumulating with the money that’s was meant for something else or to handle some essentials needs , money he or she can’t stay without using for long .

No @Umulala-alala Don't make discretionary income mandatory for Bitcoin. There are many who don't have discretionary income like a student who is still studying.

You must not know what discretionary funds are.

These guys accumulate Bitcoin with the funds they have. They accumulate Bitcoin by saving money they get from their parents, they don't have discretionary income,

Why the fuck does it matter from where the student got the funds?  They are still discretionary funds as long as they are not needed for basic expenses.  Maybe you should look up the meaning of the word discretionary so you might learn about the meaning of that word?

they are learning about Bitcoin and buying within their economic capability because they have discretionary funds.

Get the fuck out of here. You are trying to distinguish between discretionary income and discretionary funds, and at the same time, you make the topic more confusing than it needs to be.  Are you a troll?

Why the fuck does it matter if we call it discretionary income or discretionary funds?  They are pretty much the same thing, except one is static and the other is moving.  Discretionary income turns into discretionary funds as long as you do not spend it.

In the future, these guys will be more motivated to accumulate Bitcoin when they enter the job and earn money.

Sure.

Using discretionary income will help you to remain consistent and to avoid making decisions based on emotions.
That will depend on if you have a reliable source of discretionary income. There's no way you can accumulate bitcoin consistently unless you have a reliable source of discretionary income.

Your statement is confusing @Cossyblack because you don't need to a stable source of income to get started buying bitcoin, and even if it is preferable to consistently buy bitcoin, investors do not have to be consistent in their investment into bitcoin, so they can invest whatever they have when they are able to do so.

Sure it is preferable and better to have a stable income, yet it is not necessary to have in order to invest in bitcoin.

You are correct that discretionary income can be increased by decreasing expenses and/or by increasing income, and yeah, there are some guys who are not very organized and/or disciplined with their finances, so those kinds of unorganized/undisciplined guys will have room for improvement and more abilities to invest in bitcoin if they are able to increase their discretionary funds.

[edited out]
Having a reliable source of discretionary income can be a prerequisite for long term investment.

Having a reliable source of discretionary income is not a prerequisite to invest in bitcoin for the long term, such as 4-10 years or longer.

Even though in the future, basic expenses will continue to incur, so there are need to pay basic expenses in order to not have to use the bitcoin.

But the problem here is that your weekly expenses will not remain the same, sometimes the amount of expenses may increase and sometimes it may decrease. In such a situation you need to adopt a consistent policy in fund management by keeping a certain amount where you allocate it for Bitcoin, as well as for keeping an emergency fund and even for personal expenses.

The amount of bitcoin bought each week can vary based on the income and/or expenses, so then, for example, if discretionary funds are high, then more bitcoin can be bought during those times.

Almost everyone will make unnecessary expenses in which case they can use personal funds that are a part of discretionary income. As you learn to understand that Bitcoin will become more valuable in the future and that the value of fiat will decrease due to inflation, you will want to accumulate Bitcoin regularly and build up more Bitcoin holding for the future.

You have strange ways of talking about this.  When a guy has discretionary funds, he can use them to invest, save and/or discretionarily spend, and yeah, if he discretionarily spends a lot, then others might consider his discretionary consumption as unnecessary.  By the way, discretionary consumption in general is considered unnecessary because it is not part of basic spending, so se can think about discretionary consumption to be to buy wants rather than needs, even though sometimes the categories might seem to overlap, from time to time.

For example, if everyone expects me to go to my sister's birthday party, and there are costs in that, then yeah, I could skip it since I don't "need to go" in order to continue to live.  It is not like food or water, yet at the same time, not going to the birthday party would likely negatively affect my relations.  Each person has the ability to decide how they want to spend their discretionary funds, and frequently there can be room for cutting, yet other times, there may be needs to try to increase discretionary income rather than cutting.

By the way, investing in bitcoin is a want rather than a need, even though, as you implied, future life (and options in life) may well be much better for those guys who invested in bitcoin in earlier times and also strengthened their cashflow management systems and practices, as compared with those who did not.

On most occasions it's not just about waste or spending on unnecessary things, but it's more of low income that cannot properly take care of all their needs, so if any investor find themselves in such a situation, the best thing they should be doing is to look for an additional source of discretionary income, because without having a discretionary income left after taking proper care of their basic needs, they cannot invest and do it the right way.
No matter how poor they are, there are very few people who do not save. So if that saving is small and if it is long-term, then regular income is not required to do that. There are many people who do seasonal business or developer business. Their income is not regular, but if they want to invest patiently and long-term, then it is possible. Many people say that if someone does not have a discretionary income, then long-term investment in Bitcoin is not possible, but I think regular income is not necessary for investment, but desire and money are important. If a beggar wants and has an idea about Bitcoin, then he can also invest. The purpose of any investment is to make life better in the future with that money and use it to fulfill the needs and hobbies/desires of life.
Therefore, there is no need to ruin today's life to make tomorrow's life beautiful, but it is wise to keep today's life intact and invest/save some for the future.

Yes.  There is a need for discretionary funds to be able to invest in bitcoin, and then there is likely a need for ongoing discretionary income to be able to both continue to buy bitcoin and to even be able to hold onto bitcoin.

Of course, discretionary funds is the amount that is available after the basic expenses are accounted for, so yeah, basic expenses continue to happen for the 4-10 years or longer that the guy is buying the bitcoin and/or holding the bitcoin, so there is a certain need for ongoing reasonable cashflow management and income to pay expenses to be able to hold the bitcoin for 4-10 years or longer without tapping into it.

No @Umulala-alala Don't make discretionary income mandatory for Bitcoin. There are many who don't have discretionary income like a student who is still studying. It is a dumb and largely irrelevant point (like a gotcha question) that you are making to distinguish between discretionary income and discretionary funds.

Why do you believe that there is some important need to understand the difference?  You just trying to play gotcha and contribute to confusion? or you are trying to pick some abstract point and proclaim that you know more than everyone else?

1) Self-Custody is a right.  Resist being labelled as: "non-custodial" or "un-hosted."  2) ESG, KYC & AML are attack-vectors on Bitcoin to be avoided or minimized.  3) How much alt (shit)coin diversification is necessary? if you are into Bitcoin, then 0%......if you cannot control your gambling, then perhaps limit your alt(shit)coin exposure to less than 10% of your bitcoin size...Put BTC here: bc1q49wt0ddnj07wzzp6z7affw9ven7fztyhevqu9k

Of course, I don't see why anyone would even consider investing into a volatile asset like Bitcoin without doing so with their discretionary income.. Discretionary income is infact the very first and most important requirement of investment that every investor must priotrize, since it is that money that is left after you must have sorted out your basic needs and responsibility..And so when you invest with such money, it lessen the pressure to sell when or due to any basic needs whatsoever, since it has already been sorted out...infact the idea of patience and long term planning that you pointed out cannot in any way replace the need for discretionary income or else you would just be gambling with your investment..
Investment requires the availability of discretionary income...So if he beggar don't have discretionary income then he shouldn't have any business investing even if he/or she has high level of knowledge. ..
