Hi guys,

After I updated some things, I restarted Bitcoin Knots to find the software re-downloading the whole blockchain. I already have the complete blockchain downloaded on an external drive. I am wondering how I can direct Bitcoin Knots to the already downloaded blockchain, so I don't need to download it again.

I have deleted and re-downloaded the software itself only to find upon re-installation, it boots and doesn't go through the standard set-up procedure - jumping straight to downloading the blockchain.

Please help, I can either point it the the direction of the blockchain or delete all files related (not sure how to do this).

THANK YOU

In the bitcoin.conf file (Should be in </home/<your username>/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf, create the file if it doesn't exist, and place the following text inside it.

Code:
datadir=<absolute path to the folder>

Your external drive is most likely in /run/media/<username> or /media/<username> so you should be able to find the subfolder from there.

For an easier one, if you are looking for bitcoin.conf file just open the bitcoin knots normally then go to settings and option and then open configuration file. You can check the image below for reference.

Once you open the bitcoin.conf file, you can add the datadir as pointed out in the post above. Take note that the default folder name is usually "Bitcoin" so if you have an external drive, look for the Bitcoin folder on that drive, copy the path, and paste it like this below as a sample. The full path should also work just fine.

Code:
datadir=/media/ChristIsKing/MyExternalDrive/.bitcoin

Do you mean the screen where you can set the datadir and other setting like prune?
Start it with --choosedatadir command line arg and it should open that set-up procedure a.k.a: "Welcome Screen".
That'll only work in the GUI client though.

Otherwise, you can set it in your bitcoin.conf file like others have pointed-out
or launch it with --datadir=<custom_datadir> every time you want to launch Knots.
