We go to great lengths to protect our private keys and seed phrases. Cold wallets, metal backups, multi-sig setups... we lock everything down so no one but us has access. That’s great for security — but what if you suddenly die or fall into a coma? Would your spouse, kids, or family be able to access your crypto?
Yes, they will have access to the wallets if something happens me. There is a trust element to owning Bitcoin, you have the choice of either trusting your family or gifting the Bitcoin community with an inaccessible wallet by not sharing the access codes / seed phrase. In my mind both scenarios are fine but I would like my family to get the benefit of my Bitcoin.

Well, to me one of my kids knows how to open my phone wherw my cold wallet Electrum is installed on the samsung hidden folder. I said someday if I die they make sure to open my wallet on that phone and make a copies of public keys because I totally removed the wifi and bluetooth IC. What he can only do is to scan the QR code via camera. I told my kid to go here on thw forum to ask for help if he forgot jow to do it someday. Atleast I told tjem that I have Bitcoin on my wallet if they need money they can sell it.
About the guy you met did you ask him if what wallet he use before. If the cold wallet is hardware wallets like trezor the chances of recovering it is pretty slim. If the problem is password maybe his wife can able to access it if the password is related to their anniversary or birthday or anything that they can't both forget.

i doubt there will be reliable and accurate data because 1) we don’t know how many are holding crypto they might have died without telling anyone about their holdings You are right there is actually no accurate data for that but there an estimate and it came about from an analysis by chainalysis. And that estimate puts the lost Bitcoin which includes those of dead people and other who forgot their passwords at around 11% to 18%. Some other data puts it at exactly, 20%. Read here: https://www.ledger.com/academy/topics/economics-and-regulation/how-many-bitcoin-are-lost-ledger#:~:text=Estimating%20the%20Number%20of%20Lost,high%20as%204%20million%20BTC.

If you’re aware of that risk, then you should already be preparing a way for your family to access your crypto in case something happens to you. It’s really up to you, there’s nothing wrong with planning ahead and putting a solution in place as early as now.
After all, you’re the one in control of your crypto assets, you hold the keys, so you have the power to secure them properly and make sure your loved ones can benefit from them when you're gone.
That should be the right mindset for any crypto holder. But as we all know, not all of us here are aware of that, and would chose to prepare a way not to compromise their crypto assets in the future. This is the reason why crypto investors are encouraged in the first place to acquire basic knowledge on how to handle your investment especially if you are already in your most critical stage, like any time death will possibly happen. If you’re wise enough, you can plan possible ways ahead, but if you’re too confident but lack of smart analysis, you will end up losing your crypto assets that you have been working all your life.

So many Bitcoins have been lost or rather inaccessible because the owners are dead and left no notes on how to access it. I'll appreciate it someone can mention the statistics of this.
i doubt there will be reliable and accurate data because 1) we don’t know how many are holding crypto they might have died without telling anyone about their holdings 2) some people like keeping information to themselves and they don’t really want to tell anyone about private information especially when it comes to their wealth The truth is we don't have exact data on that, we can't know how many bitcoins have been lost because the owner died and left no notes on how to access them. But it is clear that if we do not have a plan or solution, it can even happen to us . Losing access to or being unable to find an inheritance when a loved one suddenly passes away happens a lot in our real lives . This even happens with fiat money, gold...not to mention bitcoin, an asset with higher privacy. So don't be subjective, we should have a plan for our crypto assets because unexpected things can happen at any time .

To prevent the assets you have stored from being frozen in your wallet without anyone being able to access them, you need to review the purpose of storing these assets, whether to pass them on to your wife and children or to take them with you when you die.? A man who is responsible for his wife and children will continue to work day and night just to make them happy, writing a will is not the best solution if the person who receives the inheritance does not have the knowledge of how to access the wallet, trade it and send it to a bank account.
Parents may be the most trustworthy heirs (apart from wife and children), but I would rather entrust the assets to my wife because she will be responsible for supporting my children if something happens to me. Bitcoin is the most secure asset, so don't let that security be misinterpreted so that no one can access it if something bad happens to its owner.

I already teach and explain to my family how to access my crypto and if something bad happens to me, I hope they can access my crypto and use it to continue their life. With the crypto I have, they don't have to worry about earning money because I prepared a nice amount for them to survive. But they still need to make money with their ability and not just depend on my crypto.
If you want to give Bitcoin as your legacy, you need to prepare many things including teaching your family how to use it. Maybe it needs time until they understand but it is worth it so they can use our crypto without a problem.

If unforeseen circumstances happen to me , I wound want my family to have access to it , that is why excessive secret is not good in the family, at least your wife and children should have a primary knowledge of your crypto, but depending on the kind of relationship that exist between them or probably one of your family member, at least one person should have access to it, there must be a trusted person to share with , what is the need if my family can’t have access to it , while I have a reasonable amount in my wallet.
People should be mindful of unforeseen circumstances and not take this security stuff so personal, at least your wife or husband should know what you are amount to so if anything happened to any of them your family will not suffer while your investment is of no use , too much secret is not good .

I think you have done well by imparting your family about crypto and how they can access your crypto wallets when you pass out from this earth some day. Your seeds phrase and password that connected to your wallets is what they need before they can access your coins easily, it will make them not to suffer when they have access to your crypto because they will make use of the crypto to sustain themselves and also to be part of crypto users.

I think about this a lotbut because we humans are naturally lazy Iforget about it and then when I read a topic like thisI think about it again.
It's important for people to consider passing on their Bitcoin savings to their families, but the problem is that most of us have families who don't know much about Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, so it's difficult to explain it to them and give them your private keys and important passwords.
Recently, Binance added a new inheritance feature witch allowing users to designate a legal heir in the event of their death, This feature enabling them to inherit the deceased's Binance account.

Binance creating a WILL function for this here is the topic https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5547864.0 in my point of view making such system is a bit difficult in Bitcoin because there is no third party or authority in Bitcoin who will control or help in these situations. Everything is fully decentralized, so people have to manage it by themselves. If someone gives their close family member all the information of their account, like wallet password or seed phrase, then after the owner dies, the family can get the Bitcoin easily. But if someone does this, it can create a privacy issue. Sometimes even a close family member might access the account and take full control just for the money.

I don't really trust anybody, so who should I give my seed/pvk to? Suppose, there is somebody I trust, the potential that they could no longer be trustworthy in future is always there; also, giving it to somebody would make me intensely restless very moment I tell, because now someone else aside from myself knows the seed/pvk. If I die suddenly, my crypto will disappear along with me and I have got no problem with that. God forbid if my mental faculties disappear early on, I would not know what to do. ...
Quality response.

I think this is a fairly straightforward question to answer. If you don't take any precautions, nothing will happen. However, if you manage to put in place and inform someone you trust, then it could still be used and help those whom you have entrusted.
This has a deeper aspect to discuss, and it's the legality of it, given that it involves sudden death or something similar. There may be some legal implications that could be overlooked and lead to a dispute. It's something to think about as well.

I’m not sure if there’s something like a formal trust where you can entrust your crypto and have it automatically distributed to your chosen beneficiaries when you’re gone. But since most of us live by the rule “not your keys, not your asset,” that already says a lot, we don’t really trust anyone else to manage our keys, even in the case of death.
we keep our keys private, but at the same time, we want our loved ones to benefit from them when we're no longer around. That’s why it’s important to prepare while we’re still alive. As early as now, we should already have a plan or system in place to give them access so they can actually use what we’ve saved, not struggle to recover it after we’re gone.

I believe our loved ones are just like us, if we can learn about bitcoin, why can't they? I see many people give this reason but in my opinion, the problem is that we don't want to share these secrets. In other words, we don't fully trust our loved ones. If we really want to share, transfer our crypto assets to our family, then spending time educating them about bitcoin is not too difficult. Before, I was the only one in my family who knew about bitcoin but now my brother and wife know too, and I find they are even more knowledgeable about it than I am. Recently, Binance added a new inheritance feature witch allowing users to designate a legal heir in the event of their death, This feature enabling them to inherit the deceased's Binance account.
To be fair, everything has risks, including putting trust in loved ones because there is no guarantee that they will not betray us. But I would rather trust my family than trust any third party.

Life doesn't only revolve around money, as a human you should create a good relationship within those that are very close to you. If you have enough money, while you are investing on your future also learn to extend a helping hand to people around you who are not financially indented. It is never a must that someone out there must inherit your wealth, if you love someone that much what you need do is to establish them to make their own money and they won't even care much about your own wealth even if you will it to them. It is true that we do not own our lives such that anything can happen at any moment but if that person or those people you heart so much are also rich even if they're not as rich as you, but you won't bother so much about revealing your seed phrases to anyone. It is better you didn't even reveal your seed phrases to anyone than to face betrayal from the people you trusted so much because the depression alone can make the rest of your life miserable.

You can mitigate this risk by setting up inheritance in Liana wallet. With Liana the primary key you create for yourself remains active indefinitely, while the inheritance key can be set to be activated automatically after defined period of inactivity from the primary key. Liana also allows for more advanced inheritance setups, such as those based on decaying multisig schemes, providing advanced flexibility and control. I would advocate taking the time to learn how Liana works to fully unlock its potential for inheritance planning.

I don't blame people who keep their crypto assets secret. Even close friends and family members cannot be trusted these days. It is common to hear fearful stories of how someone was murdered because of the assets or money they own.
Except you want your crypto assets to be a donation to the crypto market you should have an inheritance plan. There are many ways to achieve that but all of them have some level of risk. For me, I have one trusted member of my family who knows all about my crypto asset. I might inform one more person in the future.

This situation is surely serious problem for those who are not having anyone into their family who can manage this because all are not having families which are familiar with this crypto and also have understanding managing this after respective member. Sometime back a member suddenly died and his all assets was on few exchanges which no one have access then It's never came into their use and exchange also not give any support to them in this case after some time this exchange also disappear which was big setback here now it's time to have things which can help member's family in emergency. Even this is not easy in practically but surely something needed which can access to members family, and they can use after any problem because now its need of time and also for better use case of crypto and bitcoin.
