Education is not a scam and can never be a scam.
Everyone is now claiming that education is a scam because after graduation you either end up working as a salary earner or searching for a job.
It is very common in the rural area; students drop out because after school, they believed they will end up searching for jobs and therefore prefer going to farm or learn  trade through apprenticeship.

Firstly, why education is not a scam is that it is a means or foundation for skill acquisition, i.e., if formal education fails, the ability to write, read, think and learn helps one to grow in business, trade and self learning.

Secondly, knowledge is power: quality education helps you to think critically, solve problems, face life challenges and enables you to take better decisions.

Thirdly, if you look beyond a job, education gives you or improves confidence, communication, and the ability to make one become a well-informed citizen.

Lastly, education can open door of opportunities; if not for education, a poor man and a rich man kids can never be seen together learning. Education will put you in the same class. You can also learn from a new environment, like those who study abroad will understand this better.

It is a poverty mindset that makes one think one must be rich after school. School is designed for us to accumulate knowledge and be intellectually rich; therefore, if one wants to be financially rich, one needs to learn a trade or business or how to invest.

Furthermore, school can be disappointing, but real education, like formal and informal education, cannot be a scam.
What you do with what you learn determines your real life results.

I am sure if not for the education, this forum (Bitcointalk) could not be designed and developed by someone who is still illiterate.

Also, the founders of Bitcoin and people that bring the idea of other means of payment rather than local currency are not illiterate. Anything you are enjoying now (Website, Digital banking, Mobile app, and so on), someone that is knowledgeable did research and initiated it.

 The foreign land that you are comparing to Nigeria. As of 2025 America is 249 years old, while the U.K. as of 2025 is 318 years old. They have good resources. So if their students drop out, it can never be like ours. Nigeria is 111 years old since Great Britain discovered us, and after independence, Nigeria is 65 years old.  

A foreign country developed and grew, and as the age of their technology, ours did not develop as theirs. I am not trying to condemn my country but just want people to stop comparing Nigeria with the U.K., U.S., or China, etc.

Corruption has affected us negatively, and our resources are misplaced and not utilised very well.

My suggestion is to think of school as a foundation, not a finished line.

I believe the common saying that "education is a scam" mostly comes from lazy  minded individuals that believes that after graduation, they just sit back and expect the government to do everything for them, and hand over a good job to them simply because they are graduates. There are people who studied one thing and ended up doing something completely different, let’s say someone studied accounting and later ventured into real estate. But because of their character, the way they handle money, and their ability to relate with people, they now have a strong network of contacts to sell land to from his accounting department in school with a track of integrity. OP, there's one thing you need to put in consideration.... Education & School has a difference that most people overlook.
Breaking things down, you can get education even when you're out of school.. There is a saying that "Learning never ends" but going to school must surely come to an end...

Considering the situation of our country... the mentality of most individuals having get to say "School na scam" is something that we experience even till this present time... A clear instance is the rate of malpractice in secondary schools.
Just imagine going to school for good six years, preparing to face external examination (WAEC) and at the end, teacher's get to force you to pay for malpractice (expo) and allow students use phones in exam hall.... Why wouldn't most individuals say school is a scam.... Can we talk about what those in the higher institutions face with Lecturers???

I had a friend back them who believe education is a  scam that acquiring a skill is the best , but no doubt skill is also good but been educated elevate your level of intellect, after junior waec she stopped and paid to learn hairdressing , but we furthered ours to senior waec and high institutions, today when having a conversation that our so called friend don’t interact infact  she has no contributions at all , she has no account details when ask to open an account her response was I don’t like bank and their attitude funny tho but she can’t fill a form , she doesn’t know where to submit or what to tell anybody at the bank , so you see , she has no confidence in herself, we are in a digital world , most people don’t like holding money , all they want is get their stuff done while they transfer to you and go , there is smart phones everywhere, innovation  is taking place day by day , she is not on any social media , she doesn’t know any trending things which makes her dwell in the  past , so to me education is not scam , now she lost her ability to write , read, communicate, boldness to mingle with others , learn and grow her business now , which she is regretting and wish she can turn back the hands of time to correct her wrong and belief .so education is not a scam .

Scam is definitely something that doesn't work out after putting entirely all hope on it. Scams exists in different dimensions and we just have to boost our confidence, knowing what we want and directly going after these goals personally. Why do we exists? We just have to thrive and survive because it's the only way we can keep clean record of our legal system. There's actually more to notice and learn from them.

Education makes you lenient and been able to handle oneself in the system. I know it's very important we do things with our initiatives, taking decisions that are our very best. I totally agree with your statement that education is not a scam and can never be a scam. I believe we only feel that education is a scam based on the where we find ourselves,  a country where we have a lot of graduates without a job. I still don't think this is a enough reason to see education as a scam.
Education has its benefits,  firstly education gets to prepare you for the society. It's helps you understand morals and how to live with others in the society. I will not say that education guarantees that you will be rich, but it's a bedrock to being successful in life. There's a clear difference between School, education, Nigerian educational system and the Normal or expected educational system. ideally, school is not a scam but to an extent the one we practice here has become obsolete and has reached a point where it should be done away with. years ago, i had a case in police station. in one of my visits to the station. I overheard a case of two yahoo guys. One was hired to work in the boss Hk, he lied that he could read and write. The boss sent him Transport fair to come over, he went stayed a week and he could not write or read proper. The boss asked him for refund and also add extra money for his stay in the house. The guy refused to pay, then the boss injured him and the case was reported to police.

Many young guys refused to go school because they were lied to that schooling is a scam, they thought fraud is easy way to survive. But fraudster needs education. you can't scam someone if you can't read nor write.

I totally agreed with your points, education is never a scam and it will never be, lack of education today made many youths to join bad gangs such as banditry, boko haram and many more. The reasons most people see education as a scam is simply because at the end of your academic studies, one finds it very difficult to get a job here in Nigeria, and it is only Nigerians who also think and believe such a fallacy.
Other parts of the world where there is development, I don't think people who are educated find it that difficult to get a job, corruption and other crimes has messed with our system and has made the people in government to be excessively greedy to the extent that they don't feel the masses are suffering.

Education is not a scam, as OP said. Education gives you numerous opportunities and access to many things in life that you never imagined. Being educated, even without a job yet, is a first achievement in life. Nowadays, technology advances every day, and many things appear online. Without education, how will you read, write, or solve problems? When you are educated, it brings more value to your life. It differentiates you from an uneducated person in terms of communication and appearance and also gives you respect because people will see you as high value in society. Education is not a scam, it's of great value to our lives.

Frankly speaking education is not a scam, education is the key to success, better opportunities, education liberates you from been blind from illiteracy and opens your eyes and mind to greater opportunities in the future,once you are educated it pave ways for you as a person, imagine going out and you can't be able to read and write and probably lost your way because you can't read common words on a signpost by the road side.
Mere knowing how to read and write is a plus to one, education broadened your knowledge and sets you free from being cheated by peers.
