Have you ever fallen victim to a reverse scam in sports betting?

Recently, I watched a video on youtube about a sports betting scam and wanted to share what I learned. I found this technique simple, and it surprised me how people may fall victim to maths. This is called a reverse pyramid scam, well, it looks legit, but it’s all just a numbers trick.
First, this scam works well with horse racing and soccer, but we will focus on horse racing in our example.
Let’s say there’s a race with 6 horses. The scammer, let’s call him Robin , shares different betting tips with different groups of ppl. For instance, if Robin has 100K emails, he sends a different horse tip to each group of about 16.6K people (one group per horse).
The idea is that only one group gets the correct tip. For the next race, Robin will repeat the trick again and again until he has a total of 210 people (or something close to) with 3 correct tips in a row... next step, he asks them to pay $500 or $1K for the next tip. If even 100 people pay, which is less than half, he will make around $50K to $100K without ever knowing which horse would win. He collects the money and simply disappears ...
Actually, when you ask a scammer Why do you sell tips instead of doubling your winnings by yourself? he will tell you that bookies have banned him because of the large amounts he made (so he prefers selling tips instead)... This is a universal response. A stupid argument but it still works !!
I know that expert bettors already know about the reverse pyramid scam, but it's good to warn new players, especially those looking for a quick fortune.

I quite agree with you, this scam habe been on for ages and we have different names for it and for sure even in card games we have szch tipsters scam probability because on several occasions we have seen such tipsters scams on the street using mostly card games or dices game to perform this scam.

The best way to handle it is to avoid them, because you can never win over the house since the outcome of the game is already fixed in the scammers web which is not known to everyone else playing the game.

No I have not but the example is interesting. Generally all tipsters are scammers, and I find it odd that people are not able to accept this truth.

This is leading to an exact same discussion as the last one I just posting on. I haven't asked personal questions like this to them, but if this is usually what they say to  convince people on buying the tips, it's on the buyers I must say.

It's easy! Here's what they do -- disable some notifications, setup a bot to bounce any type of hate speech or disable comments for members.. Only admins can comment and all you're left with is to react with 😡

Most of these guys who give tips don't bet on the games, they are people who lost money in the game and realized early on that they wouldn't win in the long term, so they started giving scams. But the people who pay for these services because they are people who look at bets with the intention of making a profit, they are blind.

Yes, it is. It is the prerogative of the bettor whether to pay for the tip or not. Very rare that you will encounter a genuine tipper. Most are scammers. So it is on you if you will fall on this kind of scam. Because more than likely, the tipster is a scammer as he can easily bet on his own if the tip is indeed real.
Up until now, no legit tipster has been known in the forum. Considering the years of having gambling board in the forum itself. But there are threads which discuss some pointers or comprehensive discussions regarding specific sports where you can get insights or idea about the game and the updates on the sports like in boxing or soccer. These 2 common sports are usually the topic in the gambling discussion board. You can really gain some insights from these sports that you may use in deciding your bets.

This is something new, but I don’t think I will fall into this kind of scheme. OP mentioned horse racing as an example of a sport where this scheme can be implemented.

I never trust an unknown tipster. I am very familiar with the tipster; he should prove himself first before I trust my money with his tips. You will not fall for this kind of scheme if you trust your bets or from a familiar source and do not rely on tips coming from strangers. Why would I? It’s my money, I prefer to lose it with my analysis.

This is almost what every telegram tipster channel is doing out there. I don’t think you discovered anything new. That stuff has been around for years. Probably it existed even before telegram and twitter. It is still an accomplishment to see the scam which they are doing though. Most people can’t see through it and lose lots of money on those scammers. You also wanted to warn other people and that’s super nice of you. Life is reversed as I read a lot of commentsinbthis thread and everyone seems to know about this trick but surprisingly for me this is the first time I am hearing a reverse scam most especially in horse racing since the game mostly have to do with live events that everyone will be active to see and detect every possible manipulation attempt during the game.

That's a good logic, but it's hard in reality.

Let's use your story as the example, you said the tipster divide it to 6 group.

Isn't when a tipster promote his service, he will mention his group which is only one, how to those 84K people join in the other 2,3,4,5, and 6 group? Let's say horse 2 correct, for the upcoming match, the tipster have to create 5 more group again.

I think the gamblers will feel suspicious why they have to move to new group for new prediction.

Only gamblers that wants to make profits from gambling without understanding the game they want to place their bet on. It;s quite funny to see that gamblers goes as far as paying funds to tipsters in order to get tip. It's an old trick that is still existing and people are falling for it because they want to get rich quick with gambling. Dude, that is classic scam psychology, not a real skill. Tipsters like Robin rely on peoples hopes, they use hundreds or thousands of random tips, rely on the ones that hit, then take full price for them. That is pure manipulation 101.

The DOJ has even prosecuted pyramid style sports betting schemes. A Las Vegas couple has been accused of running a multimillion dollar scheme that never actually took bets, just funneled money from newbies to previous investors. It is textbook, no real success actually, just recruitment and math I will say.

Pyramid schemes rely on continuous sign-ups, not real value. They collapse and most people lose. Meanwhile, are tipsters pushing inside stories with sob stories? They are selling smoke, not insight mate. Good luck to you in warning others.

This is the first time I am reading this. Scammers have different tactics to elicit their bad work. Although, I can not believe anyone that told me this. I will know there is something wrong somewhere and which I do not care about.

We have seen many newbies on this forum that posted that they have been banned because they are betting with huge amount of money and winning and trying all ways to lure people to themselves but we easily know that they are scammers. When it is very obvious, I easily give them red tag.

I have experiences of betting on horse races and even after following which jockey wins often and what are horses win regularly, I could not make by bets profitable. Sport betting scam is one thing that has come to stay is one thing that has come to stay people should on no occasion pay money to anyone who claims to be an expert betting agent who gives out betting tips or give so called sure games because they are all scams because when it comes to gambling there is no sure game or odd because it's all lie.

That's correct, I don't know why the OP sounds so intrigued, but it must be one of the oldest gambling scams in the book. I'm actually wondering if there are people truly falling for it in our day and age, and certainly, the amounts mentioned by the OP are extravagant. I don't know how he came up with those. Some people are definitely naive, but I'm still wondering how someone could trust a complete stranger over the internet and either follow their tips, send them money, or even worse, both.

You actually have a good point here. It's actually really a numbers game and it kinda preys on people's desire for that easy win.
I've come across a couple of variations of this trick not just in horse racing but in football too like you said. The only actual guaranteed tip in betting is that if someone's selling you a sure thing they're actually selling you a lie. The real money in this kinda game if there is any comes from deep knowledge, careful analysis and a decent  amount of luck and  never from a stranger promising you the moon for a grand. The key here is that most gamblers easily fall for hype.
