I'm a long time sportsbook person, my sportsbook journey started in 2016 which means I've been there for almost 10 years. However, I was once a beginner too. When I first started out looking at the O/U options, I tended to go with U. This has a basis, as a beginner I want to bet more safely, because from the start of the match, we (the bettors) have won the bet even though we never know what the final result will be.

It plays well with how the media always try to hype up a match to encourage more watchers. The governing body of any sport is always running a business and more exciting times in the sport means well in terms of profit. So, if they can generate more hype prior a match they will do so and this could alter bettor's perception of how the match will go.

It all depends on the leagues or type of sports where you place your bets. For example I consider it a suicide to bet on under in the Netherlands II league where usually a lot of goals are scored in such games. Quite the opposite in Spain B for example where that many goals are not common and as such betting on over here it is not that recommended. So the logic is to bet according to the league where you want to bet and you need both archival historical data and also recent history to check statistics and in the end bet accordingly. Personally I always choose to bet on over as most of the events in my opinion end in over as a result.

I think we’re talking about sports in general here, and in almost any sport, the over tends to attract more bettors for the reasons mentioned by OP.

And with that in mind, if most bettors aren’t really profitable, it means a higher percentage of results actually fall under. That’s where the saying “bet against the public” comes from  because fading the public often puts you on the sharper side.

I have bet on over 0.5 before in a Seria A league in Brazil but I lost the match. It was an accumulation matches with over 10 odds in total. All the matches have been played that day and I won all expect this one which was tomorrow. I would not have taken it if I knew it would be played tomorrow and that was no cashout on the betting site as of the time because it was many years ago. No goal was in the match and I lost it. I later checked the teams that played in the match to know that one of the teams which is the dominant one did not use to score much and it is hard to score the team also.

But sometimes people choose over with a proper analysis but the match just disappoint.

I’m not expecting excitement but I agree that preferred over compared to under since this is my preference too until now. I always think that over is always easy to win because player is eager to score rather than defense.

NBA is the best example for best application of over bets since teams is now playing no defense letting player shoot and hope to missed only.

They already prioritize 3 points shot so they score higher now.

I see the reason why most gamblers will go for over is because of the desperation of each team and players to ensure that they made a score as against the opponent in the match, however, as the struggles continues, some will really find it more difficult to achieve this, because to score a goal in some occasions could be a critical task and unbelievable experience that none may come in appearance, so with a common sense of humor, we can probably always thing there will be more of goals in sports betting than not, which is the common mentality many used.

I also choose mostly the "Over" and that's not because I am a newbie at the game. It's because I pick the teams that I know play offensively, and defense is nothing to them.

I think people bet more on over than under, this is understandable because, like you said, over means excitement and shows that the teams delivered on what they are expected to do at optimal capacity. In my mind, whenever I play under, I see it as taking risk because in most of the leagues I bet, it is easier to get over than under. In football for instance, it is very easy to get over 1.5 which will be a winner the moment both teams scores or either of the sides scores two goals. It could vary for other options like corners, cards,  and others.

The over market means excitement and also being optimistic of a good outcome, whenever a bettor goes for the over market he's expecting a lot of action just as you said. What makes a game lively is when multiple goals are scored, but if you always look forward to every game  turning out this way you wouldn't really benefit much from betting. Although the under market has it's demerits as well

there is no data or result that suggest that over means excitement while under means that one is not excited about the potential outcome of a game. when you are looking at games and making your prediction, your intention is not just to bet based on how excited you are or not, you aim is to do the little analysis that you can do and base your result on the analysis already done, you can then decide the option you are going to work with. the choice of playing an over or under in your games is most times dependent on the strength of the teams involve and how good they are in their front line. that consideration affects the outcome of the game more than whatever physiological whatever that you might be feeling.

Under is also excitement, every dangerous moment near the goal of either team can turn into a goal. And for the player who has bet on under, it brings the same excitement as for the one who has bet on over, and is waiting for those moments to turn into goals. Honestly, I do not think there is any psychological aspect in choosing between over or under. Most likely, only the statistics of the team matter how well they score, how well they defend, and the head-to-head stats of the teams you are going to bet on for over or under. That is the only thing that matters when choosing this type of bet.

Choosing overs constantly shows a little bit of optimism w about the game...when I was still a beginner I usually play parlays just on the over market because I felt like they had a high chance of playing out compared to the under option based on the odds...But this was just due to the fact that I wasn't really experienced, now I'm wise enough to know that you can't just pick the options randomly without doing a proper analysis
