I have checked vacant positions for sector I am working in, and some positions from financial sector, and mostly employers were looking for experienced person, with selected skills, understanding pricing and market. Only in some positions it was mentioned that if I have a degree in related field, I would fit. They dont focus on bringing diploma and grades I got in school. Instead of degree, employer expect that I would learn fast. This makes me think that having degree is good, but it isnt a must today.
Maybe it's like that in your country, but you can't compare it to other countries, so I think it depends. For example, in my country, I can say that if you want to aim for a regular employee position, you need to have a degree, regardless of whether you have experience or not, but the degree you have is a mandatory requirement for administrative selection - even the degree doesn't need to be relevant to the job, as long as you have a degree then you might get a chance to fill the position. Because I once met a bank teller, she had a lawyer's degree and no background in finance, but she was very adept at serving customers. So yeah, it depends on the circumstances. While I'm not saying that having a degree guarantees a job, but at least if you have one here you've already passed the administrative selection.
