I’ve been using BlueWallet and Muun for a while, but I’d like to know what you guys recommend today in terms of Lightning wallets on Android.

Main criteria I care about:
• Open-source
• Privacy-friendly
• Non-custodial (ideally with channel backup or recoverable)
• Low fees

Bonus if it works well with Tor or Orbot.

Thanks in advance – I’d love to hear your opinions or real-life experience.

Zeus is the best option, but you need to connect it to your own Bitcoin node. You’ll also need to invest in a Raspberry Pi or, even better, a mini PC with at least a 2TB drive so you can run your Bitcoin and Lightning node 24/7. This setup allows you to open Lightning channels, and if you’re well connected, you can even earn some fees by routing transaction

After Zeus and running your own node, the next best options are Phoenix and Blixt. When using Phoenix or Blixt wallets, the fee for opening Lightning channels (channel opening fee) depends on how they handle incoming funds.Phoenix  Charges 1% of the incoming amount, with a minimum fee of 3,000 sats. https://planb.network/en/tutorials/wallet/mobile/phoenix-0f681345-abff-4bdc-819c-4ae800129cdf

Blixt no extra service fee for opening channels, you only pay on-chain miner fees for the channel transaction
https://planb.network/en/tutorials/wallet/mobile/blixt-04b319cf-8cbe-4027-b26f-840571f2244f

You can also use custodial wallets like Wallet of Satoshi or Blink, which are much simpler and more beginner-friendly. These wallets don’t have channel opening fees like Phoenix , since they handle everything for you on their backend. There’s also GetAlby wallet, which works as a browser extension, kind of like MetaMask for shitcoins

Also, keep in mind that Muun is not a real Lightning wallet,it uses submarine swaps instead of native Lightning channels, so it’s best to avoid it if you want a true Lightning experience.

There is only a few decent LN wallets starting with Electrum, Phoenix, Blue wallet, Blockstream app and Zeus wallet.
I use Aqua wallet that also supports LN but it converts it to L-BTC as Liquid Network assets.
It is best to test all of them and see what wallet fits you best.

There are really a lot of tutorials on this page for different Lightning wallets, created by the well-known  bitcoiner Dartcoin, who is highly regarded in the bitcoin community.

dkbit98 has provided you with various wallets that has the criterion of wallet that you are looking for. I use Electrum wallet and that's what I have been using for a few years now. I have also used phonix wallet once, but am so stock with electrum wallet. You can check them out and see the one that suits you best.

Wow, I wasn’t expecting such a great response – thanks everyone!

Appreciate all the recommendations and breakdowns. I’ll definitely look deeper into:
Zeus – I'm not running a full node yet, but now I’m tempted to dust off an old mini PC.
Phoenix vs Blixt – great comparison, especially regarding fees and how they handle channels. Blixt seems like a nice balance between simplicity and control.
Electrum – still a strong classic. Haven’t used it in years, but sounds like it aged well.
Thanks also for the Aqua + Liquid tip – didn’t expect that angle, but I love discovering new stuff.

I’ll also check out the tutorials by DarthCoin. Looks like I’ve got some reading ahead of me.

Cheers again and if you have any personal pros/cons between Phoenix and Blixt from real-life use, I’d love to hear that too!

In my experience the best is Wallet Of Satoshi. I’m curious why nobody else mentioned this one yet, it is very well known. https://www.walletofsatoshi.com/

My first experiences with LN were with Wallet of Satoshi, and it's hardly ever recommended or mentioned here
It's a wallet that was very easy to use, it's very newbie friendly

What makes it not recommended, I believe, is that it's custodial, so it doesn't allow users to access the private key or seed
For small amounts and recurring payments, I still believe it's a good wallet, but thinking about Bitcoin's best practices, that's why it's not so recommended

Correct if I'm wrong guys  Smiley

It has already been reported here, but I would like to share that I have had fantastic experience with Phoenix. It is my first and only lightning wallet on my android, and it is just perfect! Of course it may miss a feature or two if you have specific requirements, so do check it out.

What makes it not recommended, I believe, is that it's custodial, so it doesn't allow users to access the private key or seed
For small amounts and recurring payments, I still believe it's a good wallet, but thinking about Bitcoin's best practices, that's why it's not so recommended

That is correct I think. Don't use custodial wallets if there are equal or better wallets that are not custodial. There is no need to do this.

There’s also GetAlby wallet, which works as a browser extension, kind of like MetaMask for shitcoins

Never tried a Bitcoin wallet that's also a browser extension. I generally have had poor experiences with extensions (even if I do have the shitcoin MetaMask haha) -- always seems to me that they suffer from poor maintenance and get ejected by the browser at some point.

Will have to remind myself to look at GetAlby...
