Bitcoin payments in an online store

Hi everyone, I'm working on a project to launch an online store, and I want to implement Bitcoin as a payment method. I'd like to know how to do this, since I have no idea where to start. Ideally, I’d like it to work just like a regular fiat payment, meaning I’d be notified, the payment would be linked to the order, and so on. Is this possible? Does anyone here have experience or knowledge on this topic?

There are plenty of payment processors out there. Which one to choose depend completely on your needs. You want to accept bitcoin only? You want the convert automatically to fiat, or keep holding in bitcoin or whatever crypto you accepted the oayment in? Do you have good coding knowledge? You willing to pay a fee for each transaction? etc

i helped setup wordpress with woocommerce for a friend of mine, there were tons of ready made plugins that allowed you to accept crypto. Some used a free payment gateway, some a paying gateway and others were completely non-custodial (there were some where you had to give a list of addresses that could be funded, others allowed you to import your master public key, and they derived addresses when needed).
In the end, we used btcpay untill i deinstalled my dedicated server and i no longer ran it, so i helped my friend switch to MyCryptoCheckout which was pretty easy to plug in to wordpress - woocommerce and allowed the use of a master private key.

This being said, she (my friend) received a couple of payments whilst we were still using my btcpay server, but i don't think she received any more crypto payments since switching to MyCryptoCheckout.

I will advise you try to find one or more business enterprise that also accepts bitcoin payments to learn form their success stories and be able to prepare ahead for the task while implementing on this, but all you need is a payment system more suitable for many transaction, some will say they prefer the bitcoin lightening network for this purpose while some may make use of a gateway payment system.

I can not help you technically on how to implement it with code but firstly you must pick one that is good, then you can learn technical things for deployment or hire someone to do it for your business.

To integrate Bitcoin payment in your online store, you are needs a secure Bitcoin wallet and a payment processor/gateway. most of the times since your prices will probably be quoted in fiat you'll need a processor like others mentioned that will take a small fee to keep the conversion rate active for you
some processors accept several cryptocurrencies besides BTC and usually are integrated via API or widget

This is going to be a good step. The first thing I would suggest you is to meet with a business owner who already accepts Bitcoin. This will help you learn from them and you will get to know the real pros and cons of it.

My advice on this is to choose a wallet to start accepting Bitcoin payments. In this case, I recommend Electrum Wallet.

Second, you need to choose a payment gateway. There are many Bitcoin payment gateways from which you can choose a payment gateway according to your convenience. My recommendation would be BTCPay Server or BitPay. But you can choose whichever you prefer.

Then you need to add Bitcoin payment options to your website which may require you to have coding skills.

Then the important thing is, will you hold Bitcoin or convert it to fiat immediately? If you want to hold Bitcoin, then accept the payment and keep it. If you want to convert to fiat immediately, you can use Coinbase or BitPay to automatically initiate the conversion process to fiat.

For security reasons, it is a good idea to change your payment address frequently. You can even give your customer a QR code to make a payment.

So, I even considered accepting some stablecoin or something like that, but at first it would only be Bitcoin, or maybe even using the Lightning Network. The interesting part would be offering the option to pay with Bitcoin to anyone who's a crypto enthusiast, but for sure the main payments will be made through regular credit cards. I mainly just want to show some support for the use of Bitcoin, and from what I can tell, in the line of business I'm going to run on my website, there's no one else around here accepting BTC. So that would be a unique selling point. Now regarding the fees, I have no problem at all paying the small fees.

I was thinking about hosting my website on Shopify. I don't know if you're familiar with it or if people use it where you live, but I think the layouts there look really nice. It looks like they offer that support on the website already[1]. I'm not sure about the quality, but they do list Bitpay, Crypto, and other popular centralized payment gateways on the list. I have no experience using them, so I can't vouch for them, but maybe you want to check the setup instructions page if you want to proceed with Shopify. CMIIW.

Since you are a hero member, it means you should know about accepting crypto payments on your website. You can see a list provided above about crypto payments processors. You just need to choose the right payment processor that fitsyou. You may need an expert developer to integrate the payment processor in case you don't understand it. You should choose an easy payment processor so that you can easily understand everything you need.

Often we suggest BTC Pay Server for safety reasons, where you will control everything. If you think it's complicated, then hire someone who can integrate it. Whichever service you choose, make sure they don't ask for KYC. It is better to choose a noncustodial payment processor always, so you will have control over your wallet.

I have a question. Let's say you launch a product that's priced at $25. And as people are paying using Bitcoin so won't the Price fluctuate as crypto currencies are volatile. I mean if you get paid and and the market goes down won't you lose Money? Won't your business suffer? I'll be thankful if someone answers these questions.

It is okay for a higher ranked member to not be so knowledgeable on a topic and ask questions where they need help. Searching is a good way to get answers, but it is always alright to make a post to guide your actions when starting a business.

A payment processor will convert the bitcoin value to fiat at the point of payment, so the price is locked in. Those who receive directly in bitcoin should have made up their mind to see it as an investment and plan to hold long term.

But I think that launching a Bitcoin payment system will not inspire many people here, very few people can be inspired by it. There's this one: https://www.redecoin.com/. I've never used it, but I saved it to my favorites to learn more and use it in some projects in the future. What I found interesting is that they claim to have volatility protection, guaranteeing the full value of the product even if the price of Bitcoin drops.

I would recommend BtcPay Server. It’s open source and non-custodial, meaning that payments will be sent directly to your own wallet (the only drawback is that you will have to manually exchange btc to fiat, in cas price fluctuation is a concern for you).

I tried it before with WordPress and WooCommerce. Setting everything up was really easy and it doesn’t require any technical knowledge.

If you want to accept only Bitcoin payments that I suggest checking out BTCPay Server.
This is self-hosted, free, open source, and you don't have to pay any fees or use third parties to accept BTC payments.

I recommend using BTCPay Server, it's the best payments gateway, you can configure directly with your XPUB or hardware wallet, meaning you receive payments straight to your wallet. No KYC required.

Shopify is nice, but has expensive rates, if you have skills or develop enough skills, you can leave a site as beautiful as Shopify templates and even more. Optionally, you can hire a professional to set up your store in WordPress, after that, the only spending will be with the server and other dependencies of your store.

Thank you all for taking some time to reply to me. You really cleared up a lot of my doubts, and I’m going to study more about how to implement this on my website. Soon, I’ll probably launch it and I’ll share it here so you can see how it turned out. It’s a project I’m aiming to complete in about 2 or 3 months. I still need to add all the products, set up the marketing, and everything else. I hope it works out. It’s always good to have an alternative, especially for people looking to take profits now that they bought Bitcoin during the bear market. And I want to offer them that option

There are better and safer services to use so there is no convincing reasons with me to use nowpayments.io. Safety first and if we already know nowpayments.io was launched by a scam team, it is good to stay away from this possible scam. It does not worth to take risks and possibility of losing money.
