Times and seasons happen to everything in life, and that's what's happening to that feature now. Times have changed and we've to change to match up with it too. I think theymos should put up an option to block unsolicited PMs, not just the newbies option alone. What if the PMs aren't coming from newbies? That means the feature won't be able to block such vexatious and scam PMs then?

All the newbies just ignore unsolicited PMs to you and even to the oldies; these scammers will choose the newbies first because they're not aware of how they can be scammed. Especially if it involves making some money and they want you to go to another website or messaging app because they can get away from you easily if you've been brought to there. And do not be greedy because that's where it is gonna start for someone to entertain these messages. If you are not greedy then you're not going to entertain them.

It is true and not only for newbies. Any PM from anyone who is either a newbie or a legendary account, but if comes with a very good offer - such "too good too be true" offer - must be considered very carefully and cautiously. It's because such offers are unrealistic and almost likely 100% scam offers.

It isn't right to assume PMs from legendary accounts are not scam offers but in general scammers try to send PMs including offers that can catch attention of receivers. Receivers who are careful, not neccessarily to be experienced, can see it is a scam offer and ignore it. Receivers, oppositely, who are careless but greedy enough, will believe in that offer and get scammed.

Yes, just be careful with sketchy offers and messages. Don't bite the trap that they're making and don't be greedy. As usual, the targets are trying to ploy to feed their greed so they'll bite the trap.

The best advice to newbies is to ignore unsolicited PMs, it is not a crime if you don't respond to a PM especially the ones that wants to lead a discussion outside the forum. Secondly is for newbies not to click on any links that are sent privately, it could be a phishing link that will direct them to where they will be scammed. It is sad that scammers will use a reputable forum like this to mislead newbies because the newbies will believe almost anything that they are told privately thinking that it must be correct and authentic. Bitcointalk is a reputable forum but it's not every members of the community that have integrity so newbies should know this and not totally trust anything that they are told in private, this is an open forum and whatever anybody has to say should be said in the open.

That's right, don't also click links that they'll receive, and if they are not familiar with it, ignore it wholly. Because some might use some modification in URL and change it into looking an official link from any exchange or service or website that they will use to trick everyone.

I was just wondering, I didn't receive this type of warning in my early days, despite been messaged by newbie scammers

That's not possible without reviewing all the PMs that people send and receive over the forum and even with that someone can't decide for themselves whether it's we need that or not.

So it's only we need to decide it's unsolcited and we can report no matter who sent the PM and they will be banned and if I remember the incident, one of the most reputed member of bitcointalk received temp ban for sending a PM to someone and the receiver reported it to the admin, leading to that temp ban.

Well, I guess you're right on that. Besides, if such reports would be swiftly handled and resolved in good time that would be nice too. Sometimes we get such unsolicited PMs that aren't in any way related to whatever we're doing at the time and they leave us mouth open as to why we're getting them. No relevance at all in most cases. If users know they can be punished for provoking others with unsolicited PMs, I think a lot more will change for better.

Newbies need to understand a very simple truth: there is no such thing as free and fast, i.e., easy money. OP is talking about a newbie sending PMs to newbies, but I would say that anyone who offers a rather strange idea for earning money that seems very tempting should always be suspicious.
Newbies receiving such PMs, of course, should not trust strangers. In addition to the fact that you can look at the posting history of the person who sent you the PM, check his trust, and boldly report it to the moderator as "unsolicited PM."

there were no details on what actually happens when you join that telegram or any other. I would assume something bad has happened but I dont see any examples however I can guarantee someone has one

Telling you to join the telegram channel is just a means of getting you off the forum space to a more private environment where they can attempt to brain wash you  and at the end scam you if you're not careful enough.

This is just one basic strategy that scammer use and once they try it on multiple of people, newbies can easily fall for them. there's nothing like a free crypto in the crypto space. for every coin you own, you have to work for it and people don't just message a random person on a thing that's completely legit. If such thing was legit, they will rather make it official and create a thread on the service board for such a campaign.

Scammers can not wait outside forum anymore, they join the forum by creating accounts and start looking for a way to get the attention of newbies and scam them, this thread is to open some newbies eyes most especially those who are very eager to earn from crypto, when it comes to crypto you have to calm down and learn from those who have been doing it for a long time, never let greedy push you and make a decision that will make you regret knowing about crypto because when anything happens to you, you will blame yourself for joining forum while you are the cause of it.

You can request to ban the user but the chances of the user being banned is very low. If you can read the forum rules then you will see that people who are scamming other people won't get banned but rather getting negative trust or red tag for every one can see if ever someone came across with the said account. It is always the case where if someone is proven to be scammer or a scam attempt that is surely the goal then you will see that it is always given a red tag or negative trust.

This is not just for the beginners only it is for everybody.

Since we cannot restrict who can send us PMs it is important for this information to be available to everyone. Many other people would have gotten similar PMs but decide to ignore them. And this is not just for Telegram only, any conversation outside of the forum from a newbie or by a newbie should be taken as an attempt to scam the other.

On the other hand there are established and reputable members who clearly states that they can be contacted via telegram that one is a different case. Kindly report scammers and attempted scam messages for awareness for others and deterrent to others.

So, this is enough to save us from this hassle, but if it's not the default setting, then members should uncheck the tick mark from "Allow newbies to send you PMs" unless you understand the risks. And if you see someone is sending you unsolicited PMs, then simply use the "Report to admin button that will get them banned.

Brilliant idea mate. This will really help a lot of newbies that will encounter incident like this in the future. And to add this, know the essence of DYOR. Newbies mostly fall on certain scams because they are lazy to make extended research and prolong study habits. Newbies should exert more efforts because they almost lack everything, and when they have gained sufficient enough, that’s the time they can slow down, but they shouldn’t get lazy when it comes to keeping active in the forum and be updated with the latest news and scam updates.

This is vital warning for all forum users.especially new members. It is great that this scam discussion is on beginner & help board as new users mostly visit here. Scammers like @oletiteb usually target new people because they ar less familiar with forum and might trust others too easily. Even if account gets banned these scammers will likely just make new ones. So it is really important to be very careful if you get any suspicious messages even if they look to be from experienced member. Always report any scam messages you receive so forum staff can deal with them.

Weldon BitBakerr1 for bring this up here in the beginners board, scam thread like this should always be created in this board reasoning being that members that mostly get scammed are newbies because they know they are still new in the forum and can easily fall for scam, not that other members can't also get scammed through this but the old members most have seen something similar to this thread that was created by BitBakerr1 and are now always at alert each time this messages comes in but newbies may have not come across it.
I'm happy the member that sent that scam message has been banned from the forum, I know he will still create another account that he will still be using to send same message, I wish there was a way to regulate opening of new account here, I know nothing can be done about it since this forum is a public forum and for everybody but if there's a way to stop a banned members from open new account it would have been more better, maybe through there phone IP.

I saw this thread on the Meta board and I decided to bring it here since here is our beginners board where newbies always visit so they can see the strategy some people are using in order to scam newbies here in this forum.
I'm sure this is not the only newbie that oletiteb may have sent the message to and even though this account has been banned I'm still very sure he may have other accounts he or she is using to send messages like this to newbies in this forum.
Their targets in the forum are always newbies because they know old forum members won't fall for their scam easily and because newbies are naive about the forum they decide to go for them.
Please all newbies in this forum be very careful don't give in when you receive messages like this even if it is from a legendary member.
And lastly report anybody that sent you scam messages so dey can be disciplined by the forum.

I so much appreciate appreciate Op that has brought this topic up here because this is best place to discuss this since this fourm is for beginners and helps, i believe that before any newbies will join Bitcoin, there is someone that talk them into Bitcoin, so my advise will gose this way, for any newbies that has newly joined Bitcoin should not always be in a hurry to be doing things on your their own, when they know that they newly joined Bitcoin investments and they don't have the full knowledge on how to go about investment yet, so newbies should always ask questions were necessary to the investor that introduced them into Bitcoin investments for proper clearfication, so that you as a newbie will not fall victim to any Scam and also avoid some mistakes too.
