Bitcoin Meetup: What’s your experience?

So last weekend, i got invited to one “Crypto and Bitcoin Masterclass Meetup” that happened around my area. The flyer was really attractive; they wrote things like:
1.   Unlock the secrets of Bitcoin
2.   Meet expert blockchain professionals
3.   Free networking and lunch
As person wey like Bitcoin genuinely, i no wan dull. i even iron my cloth and showed up early because i talk say: No how no how, i go learn one or two Bitcoin strategy wey fit change my financial life. But as we reach there, dem start late (as usual). Then, they called the so-called resource persons to come stage. The first speaker showed up this way:
Bitcoin is a… is a kind of digital something… that you can use to invest and cash out massively
At that point, my heart just begin cut small small. That was the beginning of my disappointment.
the second speaker come up and started explaining how to buy their own coin wey “go x100 before December”.
from there, the whole thing just turn to full-blown hype session:
“staking,” “airdrop farming,” “pre-sale whitelist,” and “double your USDT in 7 days.”
dem just dey jam all the crypto buzzwords anyhow.
Nobody mention Satoshi.
Nobody explain how Bitcoin really works.
No single word on wallet security or P2P risks especially for Nigerians.
Na just pure shitcoin promotion and fast-money talk full ground.
At that point, i just sit down dey look like - So na for this thing i wear fine cloth and was
Honestly, if na me organize that kind meetup, i for do way better.
i go break Bitcoin down like biscuit.
i for explain wallet safety, market psychology, and even show people how to use non-custodial wallets. But these ones, cruise and empty noise everywhere.
So i want to ask:

• Have you ever attended a Bitcoin or crypto meetup in Nigeria
• Did they teach anything useful, or was it just hype and fake project promo?
• if you were to organize a meetup in your area, what would you do differently?

You see the tricky part of these meetups, its a way to sell their products rather than sharing the most important information needed. The exact reasons why almost every system introduced to our country has never seen to function well. Honestly, If I were in that meetup, I will ask several questions to disgrace them, and indirectly or directly enlighten the entire audience on few things so they dont get scammed by those people.

Well for your own safety, it is better to avoid them and just play fool. But if you wanted to act otherwise, trust me nothing go xup. E go dey obvious say they go try one shut you up make you no speak about the thing and everybody wey that hall go know say something they fishy unless na total mugus they the hall. I know say at the end of the day they go later tell those people to invest small money inside that their rugpull.

the aspect of the meet up you might not understand is that they are trying to promote an idea or a coin and so, they will not talk much about security and the risk that is associated with a lot of the things they are talking about. you are the one that sees it as a meet up, what the organizers likely aim at achieving is get the audience to help them mine a particular project or maybe get them to pay a certain amount that at the end, they will promise to teac them some indebt bitcoin topics that they will not teach them at the end.

real meet-up should be among bitcoin enthusiast who will normally come together to share updated idea about bitcoin and exchange ideas that will aid in the increased adoption of bitcoin as well as things that will help such community of individual stay safe from the dark influence that are in the crypto space. unfortunately, a meet up that is centered at promoting what falls under the category of Ponzi scheme will not offer such kind of platform that will expose participant to the right knowledge.

Let's be real, most crypto meetups you see is all about promoting shitcoins and how you can identify promising tokens and leverage on them when they're birthed and cashing out huge from it within the shortest possible tim. before they are possibly rugged.

I've attended some meetups crypto related but I haven't really seen any that focuses on bitcoin alone they are mostly those of altcoins tokens and newer Blockchains and I don't really fancy them that much. It turns out most times they hardly discuss technical related contexts , it's mostly just a preamble of the actual depth of the Blockchain.

Most of the projects are basically farming for enough hype , engagements and most importantly investors. Bitcoin doesn't have a central body in control I believe it's one of the reasons you don't see bitcoin themed meetups frequently.

If you want to learn Bitcoin, you can do it online using the forum. There are lots of thread that covers many aspect of Bitcoin, i don't think anything you need to know is lacking from the forum, if you can't find threads then create. Going for meetups is useless, i had a friend that also went for meetups, he was part of the organizers, which i fully am aware that he knows little about Bitcoin because he trades only, aspect of Bitcoin blockchain he knows nothing.

I won't share my time going for Bitcoin meetup, it's just a way for formality and time waste, the organizers are the ones benefiting, at the end of day you can't make money from what they teached.

Apart from tech meetups, I don't like attending crypto meetups because most of them are used to promote coins that often turn out to be Ponzi schemes. I know there are positive ones, but most of them aren't just held haphazardly. You can also watch out for the speakers, research them before attending. That could sometimes help in identifying red flag meetups.

In fact, the less you attend those crypto meetups then the safer it is for you because  fewer people will know you're involved in it or have an interest in crypto at all. So, you need to be careful attending those kinds of meetups.

I have had good Crypto-currency meet up in my early Bitcoin days but now many meet ups I go are just a scheme to sell something and it is more arranged than natural.
Crypto-currency meet ups are meant to be for the real crypto-currency experience and if you are interested in Bitcoin. You go for those that are Bitcoin suited and If your spec is altcoins you go for that too
Now scam project, exchange, Crypto-currency vendors are using this meet ups to brain wash their prospective victims but I am not saying all meet ups are bad but you should be careful.

E dey different if they go straight to the point of promoting the sponsors, but from waiting OP talk, they really talk plenty about Bitcoin wey they wrong. And e dey more painful say they use Bitcoin as the title of the meetup so that e go peak the interest of people. Nothing bad if they name am "Binance meetup" abi "Solana meetup". Funny enough na people wey no little about the blockchain na em be the speakers.

You have made a valid observation in Nigeria and actually in many countries events that are supposed to be focused on Bitcoin often end up being dominated by projects that have the financial capacity to sponsor them. It is true that without strong backing from individuals or organizations that are purely aligned with Bitcoin the vacuum is usually filled by those who have other interests mainly altcoin or exchange platforms.

They’re promoting shitcoins and promising people x100 without giving the people sound knowledge, they’re only after their hard earned money. They just want people to invest and they get rich and leave the community.

I have been to a couple of “bitcoin meetups” when I was a beginner in this space. I found that most of the meetups weren’t exactly about bitcoin, it was mostly about the organizers promoting an exchange service or shilling shitcoins. Looking back, if I don’t have bitcointalk at the time I may have been a victim of misinformation or just confused about how to navigate the crypto world.

Another problem na many Nigerians no get patience to keep Bitcoin. Immediately you tell them say dem go hodl am for four years, the person no go dey interested again. So Bitcoin seminar no go attract people well well. This thing wey our people won hear na put money today and the thing go multiply after one month. Na him make ponzi scheme dey move market for our country. But just as you talk baba, eh no go bad make men wey sabi Bitcoin parole organise something so that people go gain the ogbonge and unrefined Bitcoin education.  

Anyway, I never attend anyone. I bin wan attend one for Pleasure Park one time. But men wey bin dey there inform me say no need because na still shitcoin parole.

But make we reason am well. Bitcoin itself no need meetup. Bitcoin no get PR manager, no get central office, even the founder we no sabi in real life. Yet the system dey run 24/7 without wahala. Na human beings dey need orientation, no be Bitcoin. And that’s why meetups fit get sense if dem do am  well because we Nigerians sabi learn faster when gist dey face2face, no be everybody get time to dig deep online.
So to me, the question no be if meetup dea necessary or not  the real issue na who dey hold the mic dea tell people waitin Bitcoin really be. If na one empty hypeman wey no understand Bitcoin, everybody go commot with wrong mindset. But if na solid education dey happen, e fit save plenty people from scam, bad investment.
