Who here traded Bitcoin back in 2009 for $0.00099 per bitcoin? Cry

The New Liberty Standard Exchange recorded the first exchange of Bitcoin for dollars in late 2009. Users on the BitcoinTalk forum traded 5,050 bitcoins for $5.02 via PayPal, making the first price mediated through an exchange a bargain basement price of $0.00099 per bitcoin. In other words, the price was about one-tenth of one cent.

Does anyone here remember Laszlo Hanyecz in 2010 that bought the most expensive pizzas of all time? The Bitcoin owner offered 10,000 bitcoins for two pizzas, an offer that continues to live on in Bitcoin lore. It’s considered the first time that anyone used virtual currency to buy something in the real world.  Angry

That was insanly cheap, but I wonder if that amount covered the seller's electritcy bill for mining Bitcoin. If did then he was maybe dealing it like free money by leaving your PC idle . Haha it's fascinating how they calculated it. Would like to hear more from Forum's OG members.

edit:
Honestly, seeing Bitcoin at $0.00099? Thats straight-up bonkers. Like, can you even imagine? Back then, nobody was dreaming about Lambos or "to the moon!" missions.  it was all just tech nerds messing around with this weird internet money. It wasnt about getting rich, it was more like, "Hey, lets see if this crazy thing even works."

It really makes you wonder what "insignificant" things we are overlooking right now that will be virtually invaluable in just 15 years.

I think no one from the early days is still active here anymore, maybe just the forum admins or a few members who are already enjoying their wealth. As for me, I joined in 2016, when Bitcoin was still cheap, though not as early as its beginning stage. still, congrats to those who made it big. If any of them could drop by and share some inspirational messages, that would really motivate the rest of us more.

I believe it was Martti Malmi (aka Sirius) who made that initial sale.  He sold 5,050 BTC for just $5.02 to NewLibertyStandard exchange and this was the first known real-world Bitcoin transaction

I find this all very interesting and the mysteriousness just adds to the wonderment of it all...

Is Martti Malmi (sirius) still around? He's only 37 years old. When was he heard from last?

That 5,050 BTC is worth about $500 million today with Bitcoin priced at ~$100,000.

I see that Martti Malmi (sirius) was from Sweden and studied in Finland and traveled in Germany. He communicated often with Satoshi Nakamoto in the 2009 - 2011 time period.

Obviously both Martti Malmi and Satoshi Nakamoto (possibly an alias name) are beyond brilliant, and geniuses at coding.

It is said that Satoshi Nakamoto holds an estimated 1.1 million bitcoins. At July, 2025 price of over $100,000 each, Nakamoto's bitcoins are worth over $100 billion.

If Satoshi Nakamoto dumped his 1.1million bitcoins it only represents about 1/20th (5%) of the maximum 21 million limit cap. How did he come about acquiring bitcoins, his creation?  Huh  And, why stop at 1.1 million!  Huh

Rumor is Satoshi Nakamoto has not transferred or sold any of his huge stash...

I've read that Satoshi Nakamoto does not live in Japan as some suspect, but most likely he lives either in the U.S. or Western Europe with Great Britain and Germany favored picks.

Most think Satoshi Nakamoto is 12-15 years older than Martti Malmi (sirius) who was born in 1988 and is 37 years-old now.

I presume Satoshi Nakamoto's email @gmx.com suffix might have originated in Germany.

Satoshi Nakamoto's email address he used to communicate with Martti Malmi (aka Sirius) ►   https://i.ibb.co/1tqvckhN/Screenshot-2025-07-26-190555.png

Note the +0100 Time Stamp on his email means the email was sent from a location that is one hour ahead of UTC, from Central Europe Time.

Here is a link to a YouTube Video of Martti Malmi (sirius) at a 2014 Bitcoin Conference being interviewed :

He was asked; What does Bitcoin mean to you? A. "Bitcoin is about financial freedom" - a competing currency.

sirius used to be one of forum admins and there is another forum admin wrote his price estimation many years ago. You can imagine that price estimation was very cheap and the admin is theymos.

His post on Reddit.
Quote
Around that time I measured with a Kill-A-Watt that 1 kWh could get me 160 BTC, and based on that I thought that BTC was substantially overpriced at the 5 cents or so it was trading at. As a result, I also have the honor of selling BTC at the lowest price ever recorded, $0.003/BTC. 🎉

(That "BitCoin" capitalization... such cringe...)

There is no post as evidence on cheapest price theymos has ever sold his bitcoins.

  Cheesy Interesting Information:

When Martti Malmi exchanged emails with Satoshi Nakamoto to talk about Bitcoin coding and setting up a professional (business/financial) looking Bitcoin Currency Exchange website - Martti Malmi's email time stamp was +0100 and Satoshi Nakamoto's email time stamp was +0200, both being located in Central Europe.

Martti Malmi is definitely from Sweden and attended University of Helsinki in nearby Finland. The interviewer (see linked YouTube video in previous post ) referenced Finland when talking with Martti Malmi.

It certainly appears that Satoshi Nakamoto (possibly an alias name) - or whoever he may truly be - was indeed located in the Central Europe just like Martti Malmi in fact was...  However, there was a distinct difference between the two people! The major difference was in how each spelled the word 'labor' / 'labour' differently!

It's very interesting to note that in the email exchanges Martti Malmi (from Finland) spelled the word 'labor' like Finnish people and Americans spell it ('labor') but Satoshi Nakamoto spelled the same word the way British people spell it with a 'u'- 'labour'... This is a strong indication or compelling evidence that Satoshi Nakamoto is British!

Additionally, in a British newspaper article there is a quote from Satoshi dated July 5th 2010 in which Satoshi wrote; "Sorry to be a wet blanket, But, writing a description of Bitcoin for general audiences is bloody hard. There's nothing to relate it to."

I have never heard a non-British person use 'wet blanket' or 'bloody' as Satoshi was quoted as saying in that British newspaper article.

Also, Satoshi is known to have used British spellings for words: 'analyse', 'colour', 'organise' and 'defence' as well as his spelling of 'labour'

This is pretty compelling evidence that Satoshi Nakamoto (or whatever his real name may be) is British!  Satoshi was clearly a genius!   Grin

If anybody around the forum bought when prices was this low then most likely

they have that donator tag besides their name or they are enjoying the profits that come

from being a hodler and are nowhere near the forum because a mere $10 of Bitcoin is life changing money using today's exchange rates.

There is no one active in this forum who traded Bitcoin at $0.00099 per bitcoin. The only one who was active here recently was Laszlo but did not post anything. He only logged in to the forum a few times. Theymos, the current forum admin, could not trade Bitcoin at such a price. Bitcoin's quick growth meant that no one except a few got the opportunity to trade at that chip price. I saw the lowest Bitcoin price of $3200 since I learned about Bitcoin until now. Although I learned about this forum later, I knew about Bitcoin since 2016 but was not serious. So now I regret thinking about those days.

Since you mentioned the history of Bitcoin transactions in 2009, you may be familiar with some of them. It would have been beneficial to mention them in light of that history. Although it may have been a long time ago, they are no longer on the forum.

I'm curious if anyone has been on the forum since 2009 and is still active. There are moderators here since 2010 and 2011, and theymos is one of the oldest members. However, I doubt anyone has been active since 2009 and still dedicates time to it. As far as I know, the forum's popularity only expanded in 2010 and 2011.

Bitcoin came into being thanks to this forum, and for that reason alone, this forum is one of the most valuable websites in the world. Thanks to this, the global financial system is changing and will continue to change Smiley

Bitcoin’s price history and historical data (2009-2025)

What a memory lane! I went through that article. I never knew Bitcoin got that low. I had only read that there was a time Bitcoin sold for $0.01 and it was even unbelievable to me at that price, let alone this $0.00099. The Bitcoin journey is an outstanding one. However, I know there are tokens and coins that we jettison right now that will have the same trajectory as Bitcoin in a few years to come. The same way Bitcoin was stigmatized, labelled as scam and neglected by many is still the same way some of these altcoins are being treated now. I've a few of them in their several zeros I'm looking at the moment. Some of them I've already invested in. So, I urge us to do our research and find utility based tokens that are too cheap now and hodl for the future.

Hmm, it seems that there are no active accounts that joined in 2009 that are still active today, except for theymos himself as the forum admin.
Most of those who are still active today created their accounts in 2011.

They may have retired and become OG users.
The Bitcointalk forum that I read in several articles says that this is the oldest and still active or busy today.
