IMO, competitive addiction plays a role in ego and achievement and the psychological impact is a sense of superiority, increased self-esteem, etc. while gambling addiction is due to the desire for financial gain not just for fun anymore. In actuality, being competitive is not always an addiction.  Addiction does, in fact, have clinical criteria.  no one flag "being competitive", everyone flags only gaming disorder.  Winning head-to-head causes the ventral striatum to light up, adding spice to that victory.  Board games also feel ego-on-the-line because arousal rises when people are watching.  Since gambling is more about luck, there is less of an ego threat & it is simpler to accept failure.  It is audience effects plus ego involvement, not a requirement, in my opinion.

As you have mentioned a “financial side” then I will add that when I compete and there is a prize, I will do my best to win or will do as many tries to get that prize.
