Nigeria policemen becoming corrupt or doing their duties : why harassing youths?

I just remembered something earlier today, and I decided to write about it, as you can see from the headline. This topic is all about policemen in our country,  Anyways, let's cut to the gist.

So, for years now, it's been considered that the responsibility of a Nigerian police officer is to:

• Protect the rights and freedoms of citizens in Nigeria        
• Maintain public safety, law, and order        
• Protect the lives and property of all persons in Nigeria        
• Facilitate free passage and movement of persons, property, and goods along highways, roads, and streets open to the public      
• Assist persons in distress, such as flood victims or victims of road accidents      

I would say they have been doing their best, even with their limited equipment, but that was then, not now. I have indeed witnessed policemen stopping cars and collecting bribes for certain individuals and harassing them by requiring  to check their phone .Even I was checked a certain time, and they just kept on recommending that I should open my phone, which I didn't know what to do. I had to open it .after that, they made me wait for about 30 minutes before they told me to go. A phone, which is supposed to be a private device for an individual, is being checked by the police. If there's a good explanation for this, I'd really like to know why.


So, I want to ask ,is the Nigeria policemen becoming more corrupt every day or it's all part of their duties ?We all know politicians always involve themselves in illegal acts, and no one can stop them. But the people that are supposed to be protecting us are now harassing us. Even right now in Edo State, you can't put on a good dress without the police stopping you. Yes I know there's a high crime rate of scams and other things everywhere, but that doesn't mean everyone is a criminal even the true  criminals pay their way out by bribing  them ,I'm saying this not because I think the police are bad, but because I feel uncomfortable with their behavior, that is why dey say what ever has an advantage has a disadvantage .  Most times in the past, they would say 'police is your friend,' but now,  police has no friends.

To wear good clothes, drive car and live in a good apartment is a crime in this country. We're in a mess and the best way to live is to japa from this hell of a country that doesn't value hard work.  The police are not longer interested in protecting life and properties, that's why a young entrepreneur called fish magnet was kidnapped and killed in Anabra. Because the police are too busy looking for Yahoo boys instead of the kidnappers disturbing the state. We're unfortunate situation in this country.

The issue with police brutality is centered around so many factors which all contribute to a situation of wrecklesnes we now find amongst police officers when they are dealing with citizens expecially the youths. Of all the security architecture in the country, the police is supposed to be the closest to us but because most of them have turned there jobs into a place where they have to hustle to get extra pay to add up to Thier salary, we've gotten to a point where they try to abuse people's right just to get money from them.

Normally, a police officer has no right to force citizens to open Thier mobile phones without a concrete reason but because we are living in a society where the right of people don't count, it has become a normal that they get to do those kind of things and still goes Scot free.

We know that on the part of the youths, a lot of them have gotten themselves involved in scam which is the reason why they consider it a big deal when men on uniform ask them to open Thier mobile devices but even at that, the rate of abuse of citizens by security men is actually get out of hand.

The problem starts from the recruitment process, the police commission that is in charge of recruiting officers are not doing the needful to recruit extremely qualified people who are decent in character. However, there are already some bad element in the NPF that needs to be flushed out, they are responsible for the continues corruption in the system, hence they can be identified and layed off, the rest will sit up. Although some of them have politicians that do give them back up, that's why they are always courageous to continue their shenanigans.

You are right, if the police will get better they have to do a total reform on the recruitment process. The nepotism and tribalism way for selection must stop, then drug test and mental test should be carried out on them. Because the way the police behave on the street one can agree that many of them have a mental problem, while some are into drugs.

The police force has reduced themselves to zero , they are not tools for election rigging, they have really deviated from their very role of protection of lives and property to an escort to the politicians. The police should be giving serious attention, their welfare should increase and their mode of operations must be checked.

It seems those people have forgotten their duties. Was on transit today to Benin and this police men kept pulling our vehicle over, a company car for that matter. Our driver was asked to bring papers, and driver's licence which he did and that police man refused to let us go till the driver gave him money.

Right in my presence he pulled two other young guyz over and asked them to bring there phone's, is that one that annoys me eh! How can a policeman be commanding you to open something that is meant to be private to you and if you refuse that's where problem starts..

 I know crimes are still happening on daily basis, but we still have youths who makes their money in legit Ways. Most times I keep asking myself where this pattern of Police operation started, could it be that their Oga's from the top sent them to be harassing youths with flashy and luxurious lifestyle, Abi there salaries isn't enough? Among NPF, there are still some good ones.  Some Nigerian police force are doing an excellent job because, without them, there would be a lot of young people who commit crimes like cults, street thugs, and many more. However, some of these Nigerian police officers make sure that young people stay in the right lane, which is why they constantly check their phones to see who they are chatting with and what kinds of media they are into. They are not doing this to embarrass them. But there are just a few good ones among them, which is why they were all considered as the same.

As you can see every sector in this country has failed us so i dont knw how you are seeing this police men.
As of weeks ago their raided an area close to were i am staying am arrested up to 53 boys for reasons that are well known to them

But i will advise every young boy out there to be very careful with the hours you walk at night not to fall victim
And the way you dress matters alot too so just avoid the police and protect your self any way possible

The only reason a policeman will search your phone is because they are corrupt and I will not accept an excuse for such actions. In advanced countries the police has no right to search your phone without a warrant. Its true there are a lot of youth engaging in scam, but there are also hardworking youths that make their money legally,  so if you need to search someone phone you should get a warrant.  Its totally wrong to start harassing people on the road just for their selfish interests.

According to Nigerian constitution, every citizen get right to privacy and your phone nah your private property. So police no get right to look through your phone for any reason during their stop and search routine. The only way police fit go through your phone nah of them produce warrant from the court. But for awa country, dem no dey follow the law and if you argue or drag with them, dem fit shoot you or lay allegations for your head. Nigerian police is the most corrupt set of people I have seen, they collect bribe and forsake the Jobs they were recruited for, You keep hearing police is your friend on the road but when you get to the station you are no longer their friend, Police that was supposed to protect life and property are now the ones politicians use to carry out their corrupt activities. Never fall victim to police Men, if you do that's the day you will know how corrupt they are.

I have a story to share concerning police brutality and manhandling. There's this friend of mine that was sitting on a pavement by the roadside at about 5pm in the evening, then a police van was driving pass the road, they stopped and arrested him, took him to the station and was calling him a Yahoo Boy, when they got to the station they told him to write statement and he asked what for? To his greatest surprise the officers took the paper from him and begin to write a false statement on his behalf stating that he attacked them on the road, this is someone that was just sitting on the pavement , He had to bail himself. You can see how corrupt police is.

Nigerian policemen has deviated from doing their duties to been so corrupt that the government officials uses them to carry out their frivolous activities, the police were meant to protect life and properties but instead of that, they now go on the road to harass Youths and take 100nairra from drivers at every checkpoint. The worse part of it is that once you are a youth and you drive a flashy car, you will be asked to pull over and automatically they will say you are into fraudulent activities that's why you are able to afford such a flashy car.

My friend was a victim of their harassment few years ago, he was sitted by the road side playing music on his cell phone and all of a sudden a police van pulled over before his very eyes and got him arrested, while in their custody he asked what was his offense and they asked him to Roger them or he will be taken to the station, since he was not having any money on him they took him to the station, after series of pleading with the officers he ended up paying twenty thousand before he was set free. So you can see how corrupt the Nigerian police are.

The truth is that Nigeria police have failed in their responsibilities, all what they are after is money, they don't even respect the right of the citizens any longer. What would make a police man peruse through somebody's phone as if he is investigating a criminal,  such attitude is very uncalled for, even as you travel on the road , the interest of most Nigerian police is to collect money from drivers, and they don't border checking vehicles to know if any one is carrying an exbit or something illegal.

I think to resolve some of this police misbehaviour, they need to be given proper orientation from time to time and defining their responsibilities to them, because i can't imagine police that is suppose to protect the lives of citizens becoming a threat to them , it is very bad.

Mate the still check phones it all depends on where you met them, people still complain about those guys although I agree with you that things has slide a bit but they still do those shit on a low, is not even about checking smart phone to see if there's money that's only the prbme according to what you said, they keep doing to see if they will see incriminating thing so that they can bill you aside incriminating things, if they see something like any crypto wallet in your phone, they will start to ask to ask you what's that for and before you could know it, things go done the sup, these security agency called police is the center of criminals, infact criminals are been recruited in that force every year, they care less about security of life and properties, there major concern is how to still from people nothing more.
