The first episode of the newest season of Black Mirror, a sci-fi series that often present concepts of human nature incorporated with technology in a satirical manner, is about a woman who got into an accident and had a brain injury. They were then offered a solution to keep her alive and functioning with a technology they have to subscribe to. The catch? There are higher tiers of subscriptions. Those in lower tiers have ads and have limited features. I really recommend this series particularly this episode.

But it got me thinking of subscriptions in general. These days everything has to be subscribed to. Television, music, software, storage, gaming, and others. My question is, are these subscriptions actually worth it? Are you actually getting your money's worth?

I am here to tell you that companies are actually getting more from you when you subscribe to their services. Why? First of all, for some reasons we humans tend to subscribe to something and then forget about it immediately. How many subscriptions have you forgotten to cancel?

Second, when you are subscribed to something in a certain amount of time you might not really use it as much as you thought you would. You might be too comfortable that the service is just there and easily accessible therefore not really making the most out of it. Like in a gym membership where you pay for the whole month but you only go for a few times.

Third, subscriptions are usually in bundles. There is no real transparency and you are not really getting a real breakdown of the costs. But we pay anyway. Are they actually worth it or we just do not have a choice anymore in a world where everything has to be subscribed to?

I pay $1.5 per month per channel and still rather download the stuff I like to watch.

Funny enough I offer subscriptions and hardly anyone wishes to get those. And they (the people I deal with) use netflix, Prime, Disbey, HBO etc. at full prices.

The subscription will always be there because that is what the providers are benefiting from, have you imagined how they will function if there was no subscription from the users?, those companies that's providing it does not only make profit but they also spend in maintaining the system through hiring technicians to work all the time in giving quality viewing interface to the users and we have not also included the employees they have, to serve the purpose of customer relations in solving problems. However the subscription is worth it except you have decided that you don't have a business with anything that has to do with television but for me I love sports and that's the main reason I engage on subscriptions.

Of course we know that it's the subscription companies that benefits more. Isn't that the aim of starting the business, to make profits? Some businesses would try to be at least %75 transparent with their customers and consumers so that they can retain them but if it's a matter of getting the value for what you paid for, you can always unsubscribe if you feel they are not meeting your satisfaction.

Personally, I subscribe to a bundle monthly and if I'm being honest, I don't see the value for it but since I've not seen a better option, I still make use of it and it's also true that some people would have different subscriptions that consume their funds slowly that they have forgotten about so what I do is I subscribe for what I need, and not just because it might look appealing or helpful later on.

For those of us that have experienced annoying services that offer ads every minute, we don't necessarily have issues with ads-free services that comes with a cost. Besides, most free services don't come with every package compared to those with subscriptions. If these companies choose to offer their best services for free without subscriptions and ads, how do you expect them to make their money from the services they render?.

Every user/customer should instead know how to disable their subscription auto renewal when not in use, and subscribe to it when they need the best service. As you may know, quality comes with a cost, so I think the subscription is important.

Frankly I go out of my way to avoid companies that employ manipulative or onerous subscriptions. Even things like Netflix raising prices every 6 months is very greedy, especially with the big hikes.. not just a few percent if can often be an extra 20% in on go, while wedging in another membership layer that looks cheaper but includes far too many adverts. There's also the gimmicky crap that car manufacturers are doing now, like selling you a car with heated seats but you have to pay a monthly subscription if you want them to work - if you don't pay it you're still driving around that tech and wasting fuel on it, yet cannot access the functionality. I'm glad to see places like the EU push back on this trashy method of doing business, but unfortunately the whole of American politics has long been captured by corporations.

Not because I value the creators, but because of the convenience—subscription apps have no ads and good quality.
Plus, pirated apps are prone to viruses that can infect your computer, which is why many people avoid them.

I admit I have maybe 3 subscriptions that I don't use anymore but still get charged every month. The main problem with one of them is that I need to contact the support team through live chat to cancel, and sometimes I forget or get lazy to do that.

But most of the time I try to avoid more and more subscriptions. I don't have netflix or amazon prime video, instead I use real debrid with stremio on my tv to watch any content for a small price compared to all different services.

I don’t have many subscriptions. I don’t count the subscription for my internet connection and other utilities. No youtube, no netflix, no game subs, no spotify here.

Had a chatgpt sub for a while but then I realized the free version is enough for me since I am not doing any long conversations anymore. I don't subscribe to services or buy them unless it's absolutely necessary and I have no other choice, but first, I will try my best to find an alternative solution that would either do the work without any cost, or cost me less than I might have to pay for subscribing to the service itself. I never buy subscriptions for watching movies or series, I never buy games that I want to play, I don't pay for things that I don't usually do, and I think most people should do the same. If you know you are not really interested in working out, why pay for a gym membership? Just go for a walk in the morning, and do some jogging, that's enough.

I believe people who subscribe to almost everything are the ones who can easily afford them, and they believe it's more convenient for them to have easy access to everything as you said, instead of them wasting time on trying to find an alternative. Like, if I want to watch a movie, I will download it and watch it, I'm not a freak who thinks that he has to watch a certain movie or series right after it gets released. It depends on what we're subscribing to and their importance in our daily life. Aren't the sport and TV subscription important because we make use of them frequently. What about the internet that we make use of everyday, aren't they important and their subscription being vital. There are some subscription that aren't worth it because we aren't getting anything positive from their services instead they're the ones enriching their own accounts and going unpunished. When it comes to subscription, we should try as much as we can to do the ones that are necessary and ignore the ones that aren't basic need because the more subscriptions we are getting, the more our life becomes expensive and when we aren't getting more money, it becomes a problem in our life.

It's no problem to paying for subscription for an App, VPN, software and the rest, it shows different when pay for subscription, and I see it as a form of getting quality outcomes if you are the type that love full quality stuffs.

Some people think, free version is the same as subscribed version, but a big difference in them. For example, using free VPN gets your location leaks out than using paid VPN where your local location is not visible at all.

I personally always love to pay for subscription rather than getting it free because I want to get the full quality of that product, I presume free things are purging, things paid for are worth it.

I don’t think you need to be supporting the creators’ works because netflix and disney for example are big corporations who will not collapse just because you pirated their apps. In short, they don’t really need your support as they’re already huge companies.

It depends on the subscription program you pay and it's purpose to you. Like for me, I have yearly adobe plan which I use for work and also cloud storage. It generates me income so the subscriptions are really worth it for me.

None so far. When I try a new subscription app, I explore its features if I will like it. If not, I immediately cancel my subscription to avoid the next billimg charge.

This is why I only do the shortest time subscription possible. I usually subscribe on the 1-month plan so I will always have the motivation to use it regularly. I've tried subscribing to a 3-month plan or longer before and it wasn't worth the money for me since I will just use the program often before it nearly expires.

It's just either you take it or leave it. If you will use it fully to provide you entertainment or assist you in some work then it's worth it. My tip is to do account sharing if it's possible to someone you trust then ask him if he's ok you will divide the payment for its subscription. This is what I do when I it's expensive to me alone to subscribe to a particular program.

Well my girlfriend actually ask me about the same scenario if I'm willing to pay more on a subscription that will save her with no ads and live normally, at first I thought it was a trick question but of course I answered that I will do everything to pay for the premium and not compromise her time to live. Then she revealed that it was came from that episode of Black Mirror, it ended up with a good discussion. Just sharing.

To answer your question, it is case to case basis on how you will utilize all your subscription since some are for everyday use or just for leisure. And I think those subscription in general are worth it, since it saves you time and convenience when accessing it instead of stressing yourself or making time on finding way on how to access it for free.

It will just boil down on the spending capacity of the subscriber if it will affect their expenses, then that's the time they should review all their subscription and cut off all the unnecessary ones.

In these times when everything's for sale, you can't avoid subscriptions. You just have to choose the ones that are worth it. But it's hard, really heard. I agree with you. The tendency is to subscribe merely for the service to be available for us anytime, merely for it to be there.

That doesn't mean we're using it. It's a waste of money, therefore. We're subscribing to Netflix and HBO and others, but there are consecutive months when we can't even open it.

Speaking of gym membership, many would even take advantage of long-term offers, more expensive but still cheaper if you consider daily, weekly, or monthly payments; only to end up using it very seldom.

It's the same with internet usage, and perhaps the difference is that we won't have access to the network if we don't pay the monthly fee because they automatically disconnect our access.
In my country, paying a monthly fee is much cheaper, so it's not too burdensome, but we tend to forget about it before the due date.
Overall, this is a business, and their efforts are nothing more than progress to maintain market value for the services they provide and we as users, also benefit from the services they offer.
Many people may forget after subscribing, but we lose access if we don't pay.

The good side of subscription based life is that you can also be the person who can do subscription based product and sell. Many people miss that part, and there are so many things in life that can easily be turned into subscription model.

Also, one benefit is that, while many people do cancel their subscription when they do not use it anymore, plenty more keep the subscription even when they do not use it, specially if the price is low. That is why you would have a base number even when you do nothing.

If you are so bothered by the logic, just try to make one yourself, and try to get as many people as you possibly could.

Even at just 10 dollars per subscription, 100 people would make it worthwhile, so it is not that difficult.

To me, no. If they're just the netflix, prime and other streaming platforms, they're not worth it. They're more entertainment to me and I don't get productive by subscribing to them. And sometimes, I don't even have the energy to watch movies and series on each of them that I've subscribed for and so, I'm just wasting money for a month or two of subscription them.

It depends on these gym subscriptions. Like the others, there are promos but upon enrolling to a gym subscription, you need to be committed here. This is for your personal growth and even so there are some days that you're not able to go there, as long as you'll still go when you're free, it's just fine.

IMHO, there is no need for me to breakdown the cost. If one month of subscription is xx $$ amount, then that's the cost of it. Whether we use it or not, as long you're subscribed, that's what you have paid for.
