Hello Bitcointalkers I'm a web dev, I'm trying to design an app that can send push notifications directly to ur phone(iOS and Android) on new PM's, mentions, notifications, monitored threads, participated threads, posts on created threads, e.t.c.

But the issue is there is no API to get these unless the user login their credentials in the app(the login details will be saved locally and the code will be open source so as to see that the user's details are private).

How can I overcome this hurdle, can their be trust or is there a way to get API keys to achieve this

You cannot request data using API keys. You would have to scrape the data (threads, mentioned posts, etc.) manually and work on that. For PMs, that's not doable unless you make the user run an extension or his own script locally to get those information's.

Ofc I can't get pm's and all, but the API key will be like a limited/controlled access permission without putting your sensitive credentials, you know what I mean.

I've thought about scraping, but the information gotten will be very limited

I do understand, but that's not possible. Users cannot generate API keys, so you would either:

1. Make an app/extension that actually connects to the user accounts using his credentials (no one would use this unless it's open source, and run in the client side)
2. Or, an extension that would use your current session in your browser (obviously that comes with certain limiations).

I believe you can't get API keys, and users won't be interested in your apps either, where they need to submit their account credentials. I am pretty sure theymos isn't interested in creating apps, as he doesn't even create official social media for this forum. The forum is quite sensitive; those who provide a few services, like mention bot or public data, have scraped the data from the forum and saved it. It needs to be updated always with the time.

There are a few services that exist on the forum that you have mentioned, like the notification bot. For PM users usually receive mail notifications, which is a good thing to not miss the forum PM. For me, I'm not interested in logging in from an unauthorised app or extension. Honestly, I haven't been using any bots or extensions for the forum.

Although, the app is just a tool to send notification so as we can keep up with activities we are already engaged in.

I came up with the idea cause I made a thread and I actually forgot about it because I've been preoccupied with other things, but if there is a way to send notifications on activities, it will actually create a reminder and awareness on activities here which we are interested in and it will be easy to follow up and keep up. But anyways, thanks for your input I'll keep that on mind

That's just the way it is. It's limited, but not restrictive: anyone is allowed to scrape the forum, as long as you don't do more than 1 request per second (burst allowed).

I made a thread and I actually forgot about it because I've been preoccupied with other things
You can setup email notifications on the forum, or use the watchlist to keep track of new posts in topics that interest you.
