I'm not sure where to start so I'll just explain what's happening. So whenever I'm running Bitcoin Core, it's sucking up all the juices. I believe, I have a decent internet connection/package but while running this software I cannot run any other applications or any other devices connected to the same network. They just stop receiving any data. Even my mobile starts showing "Connected, no internet" message. I mean, it that normal Huh? Note that, everything goes back to normal speed after closing Bitcoin Core! I cannot run Bitcoin Core and use my wifi all together.

Move to appropriate board if needed.

Since it's resources is heavy ig it's normal, although I didn't faced any issue like this before. You can try limiting the download bandwith of bitcoin core by 3rd party apps. It's sucking all the bandwith for syncing. Ig after successful synchronization it will get normal like . Maybe your bandwidth speed is slow?

Man it's literally consuming all the bandwidth. Every other apps are unusable until I close it. Yes, I was also thinking about limiting the bandwidth for this or I could just leave it overnight when I'm not using the wifi. Regarding speed, as you see from the ss provided, it's consuming up to 15 Mbps, that's slow to you? Lol Undecided

while running this software I cannot run any other applications or any other devices connected to the same network. They just stop receiving any data. Even my mobile starts showing "Connected, no internet" message.
This sounds more like a modem router problem than a Bitcoin Core problem, so that's where I'd start looking. More specifically: maybe it has a hard time with the number of connections it makes. To compare: if you use BitTorrent, does it cause the same problem?

NO!
I don't specifically use BitTorrent, but I do use qBittorrent, and I have never experienced this issue there! It never caused any app to be unusable.
And what exactly do you mean by a modem problem? Bitcoin Core is the only app acting like this. Everything else uses bandwidth normally, while BC consuming it like it's some kind of starving monster...

To begin with, what's your maximum internet bandwidth capacity? If Bitcoin core is taking 15Mbps, then there should be some network bandwidth left to use by other device even if other apps are not working on your laptop. If you have a good internet network, it should be able to take more than enough device even if Bitcoin core is consuming more.

Maybe you should consider a direct landcable directly with your laptop to speed test your full network instead
linking with wifi. You can use:

To be honest, when Bitcoin core is downloaded, it really consumes a lot of internet. You will feel this when you browse other sites except Facebook and YouTube. But because our ISP has YouTube and Facebook have cache servers , we don't realize that our internet is getting slow. Maybe your real IP or your ISP doesn't have a cache server, so that your internet is getting slow.

If you want, you can control your bandwidth through a software called Net Limiter. That is, if you set a speed limit for Bitcoin Core, then it will not be able to consume more than that speed. Since there is no option to limit speed in the Bitcoin core software.

I'm quite not sure exactly. I asked my ISP guy to give me a better internet package deal but I don't know whether he activated it or not! No nothing is left, it's taking every bit of juice it can get it's hand on.

I'm a desktop user and I don't have a direct land cable at this moment.

I'm getting different numbers from these sites.

I am limited by the place I am living right now. It's a rural place and I don't have much options here. In fact we have only one ISP guy in our area.

Thanks I'll check this app in my free time. I'm not sure but I think I can reduce the bandwidth consumption by changing some parameters in the bitcoin.conf file. But I don't know how.

what exactly do you mean by a modem problem?
This part made me think the problem is with your modem router:
Even my mobile starts showing "Connected, no internet" message.
If you run Bitcoin Core on your PC and your phone loses internet access, that shouldn't happen. No matter what happens on your PC, your modem should take care of sharing bandwidth between devices. Since it's connected, I don't think the problem is with your wifi, which leaves the modem itself.
A few years ago, I had a shitty modem. My wife's iPhone would "jam" the wifi up to the point that my laptop (with weak old wifi card) lost connection. Our current modem doesn't have that problem.

basically your internet speed is slow it is 60 mine is 950 or 16x yours
My internet speed is only 70 Mbit/s, but no matter what we do on the local network, nobody gets disconnected. So again: Bitcoin Core should not be able to do this! The fact that it happens means there must be a problem elsewhere.

When you say problem, I think I fucked up somewhere in between! Cry

Not sure what caused this but I was messing up with the "Fast Startup" settings. I turned it off as I have a powerful device. And now after the restart, I am back at the setup menu of Bitcoin core! The menu that appears at first use. Now it started downloading the blocks from the start! 13 years of block data! Shit! With my shitty speed I'll take at least a week to re sync everything again!

Note I have ran Bitcoin core before, in my potato laptop, and it never jammed any devices.

I guess I'll have another bad day!

Note I have ran Bitcoin core before, in my potato laptop, and it never jammed any devices.

I guess I'll have another bad day!
When I compare this response to your original post, it simply tells us that something has changed. There could be many reasons, but I don't think it is always worthwhile to investigate. Maybe your internet is currently slightly worse, Speed tests don't always show real world performance. It is more of a "performance burst" test than a proper consistent bandwidth test. It could also be an issue with your modem or router as LoyceV indicated, because this device is supposed to handle network balancing. It is called quality of service, QoS, and at least better devices are supposed to have it. There could be plenty of other reasons why things are different now though or simply Bitcoin Core is using as much as possible of your network (more than before).

Thanks I'll check this app in my free time. I'm not sure but I think I can reduce the bandwidth consumption by changing some parameters in the bitcoin.conf file. But I don't know how.
You can limit the upload side of things, but not much of the download. Check out the article that I linked at the end of this post. You can set maxuploadtarget to 0.

When you say problem, I think I fucked up somewhere in between! Cry
It is not that you fucked up, you could simply have hardware that is not good or hardware that has started to deteriorate. The modem that ISPs often give out are terrible junk. It is not the fault of the customer. Often you can't replace it with a better model since they don't support it.

My advice is to focus on a solution instead of troubleshooting where exactly the problem lies as that could lead nowhere after a lot of time spent. The advice that you need depends on your situation. Are you fine with not using your computer for network related tasks during the synchronization?
  • Yes: You need a network level bandwidth limit that will put a maximum on the speed consumption of your computer. For example, enabling QoS if it exists on your router/modem.
  • No: You need an application/system level bandwidth limit that will put a maximum on the speed of consumption of the application itself. This is probably the simpler and cheaper solution though.

Check this article out https://notatether.com/academy/how-to-limit-bandwidth-of-bitcoin-core-full-guide/. You seem to be on Windows so you can try out that NetBalancer application and let us know how it goes.

-snip-
I'm getting different numbers from these sites.
It's worth mentioning that Bitcoin Core isn't just downloading and uploading from/to a single server (as you may know).
Check your peer list, then think of them as separate download/upload processes; with that in mind, think if your network can download and upload n-number of files at the same time without choking the bandwidth.
In other words, if there's a lot of them (or even with no inbound connection node of 10-11), that speed test result will not be enough.

You may limit the number of peers with maxconnections=<number of preferred peers>
And read this for more extreme options: https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/master/doc/reduce-traffic.md

Seems like Bitcoin-qt's registry entry was cleared by something.

Browse to your previous bitcoin datadir location and check if everything's intact, check the size and files.
If so, start Bitcoin Core (GUI) with: --choosedatadir and re-select your previous options including pruning setting if you originally ticked it.

Doesn't your ISP have website or app, where you can login and see your current plan and other details? As for different number between those 2 sites, different server location is one of the possible reason.

It means your potato laptop have bottleneck somewhere (could be either slow CPU, low RAM capacity or slow storage drive) and unable to fully utilize your internet connection. But with your current device, your internet is the bottleneck.

It should suppprt QoS. I'll confirm it after I get back home.

Makes sense. Tbh, I haven't really though about changing my rounter or ONU for quite a while. I never bought them they were provided by my ISP guy, so I never really knew about it's quality or specifications or capabilities.

My answer would be NO! I need to be fully online when I'm working, my work requires that.

Thanks mate for the suggestion, I'll surely give it a try and let you know whether it worked.

I guess so. Everything looked intact, I had all the files that Bitcoin core previously downloaded, but I'm again redownloading everything from the very beginning, a fresh start. Pretty dumb right? All those downloading, all those time wasted.

Yes but I don't have the access to it. It's a local internet provider. They don't really give us our subscription details. They just asks how much speed we were looking for and they would just activate the plan from their ends. That's it. Note that, my IP isn't even real one, they gave me a shared IP.

Lol you made me laugh Grin. Yeah it was a very old one (still running though), but it fulfilled my daily needs without any issues.

I'm thinking somewhat in what LoyceV highlighted: there could be a problem with your router which may for whatever reasons struggle to cope with a possibly high number of connections that Core might try to establish.

I can't quite remember from reading this thread if OP wrote what kind of internet connection he has. Is it mobile internet, is it DSL or cable. The specific carrier technology has its peculiarities.

As others mentioned, under normal conditions Core shouldn't hog up your network and definitely shouldn't affect other devices. Try to heavily limit Core to how many connections to peer it may establish and see if that works better for your infrastructure.

Keep in mind that if you use wifi only at your home that this is a shared medium, too, and a network busy device will affect other devices. But good working wifi can handle this. It shouldn't result in one or more devices to loose connectivity.

My apologies, I forgot about updating you. I didn't find any option named QoS in my router setting or maybe I was looking at the wrong place or it was named something else! So I asked ChatGPT whether my router (TP-Link wireless N router WR840N) supported QoS. It said it does but only the basics, rule based something, not anything advance.

I should probably change my router now, it's quite old, and it doesn't even supports 5 GHz band. Nowadays all the routers comes with duel band support as well as advance control features.  Smiley

I love Bitcoin!

Dude, running Bitcoin Core on Windows is asking to get angry. I don't have the same network connection issues as you, but when running Bitcoin Core, my laptop crashes or slows down other processes.  Sad

And look, I don't have a bad hardware: 16GB DDR4 RAM, 2TB SSD, Intel i7 11th Gen...
Right now, I'm running Bitcoin Core, and neither it nor other processes are crashing. Occasionally, it doesn't crash at all, I have a ton of processes open here.

So, I only run Bitcoin Core on Linux, and for security reasons too.

Good quote, I abandoned uTorrent, BitTorrent some time ago and use qBitTorrent to download my torrents

Sometimes the problem is the router.

The other day, I went to my mom's house and asked her to replace the router. She has a good and fast internet plan, but accessing websites and videos was very slow. So, the ISP replaced the router for free with a new one with 5G, and the entire slowdown issue was resolved.  Cheesy
