Anti gambling ads turned out to be legendary pro gambling ads

The video is an ads that Singapore wanted to use to discourage gambling, a group of kids asking themselves who will win the 2014 World Cup and reasons it got to Andy’s turn and he said his dad bet everything on Germany to win so he hope they win. This video ads was before the World Cup itself but Germany really won the World Cup that year and it looks like what was supposed to discourage gambling may now encourage it.

But jokes apart I don’t support irresponsible gambling I think gambling should be done with discipline and Andy father should not have used all of his sons savings to gamble but aside that no one has right to tell him not to gamble.
It will make sense if the government try to make their ads about gambling responsibly and not making it seem like gambling is dark.

But was that really a state-sponsored anti-gambling campaign? Or was it just placed there without being officially true? The ad itself didn’t even look like a proper anti-gambling campaign to me. There wasn’t any real education in that video, nothing that actually explains or warns about the risks.

It just leaves the viewers to make their own perception, which kinda defeats the purpose if it was supposed to be an awareness campaign.

There didn't think it all through to discourage gambling - the video settings wasn't emotional enough to get that into any gambler's head, coupled with the after effect of Germany winning the cup, that made it look like the ad was indirectly exposing the final results. Certainly, no form of gaming is predictable even an ad made to bring down the rate of gamblers can turn around to uplift the number of gamers.

However on the context of the story it's wrong to wager a child's saving, and let him know about it, the emotional results would just be as demonstrated with Andy on the video. Parents should learn to conceal gaming decisions from kids, for their sanity.

The followup ad has one of Andy’s friends asking, “Your dad’s team won. Did you get your savings back?” to which Andy replies, “No, dad never stops… he wants to bet one more time.”

The plaintive conversation is followed up with the line, “Often, the people who suffer from problem gambling aren’t the gamblers.”

Prior to the rejig, the NCPG defended the campaign: “At the end of the day, win or lose, the dangers of problem gambling, and the potential anxiety and pain that loved ones go through remain unchanged,” a statement read.

So the Singaporean government still made a great comeback on that video and still send the message across their country. We all know that Singapore is a "fine" city and they are very strict as far as gambling there. Although they have big casinos there, their population is being discourage to enter and they only want tourist to lose money in their casinos.

I agree that gambling should be tackled with discipline, but in your opinion, no one has the right to tell him not to gamble; his family can, the misfortune of one member of the family is also the misfortune of everybody, so if he is gambling irresponsibly, the family can interfere to protect the welfare of the family.

This is why gambling addiction becomes rampant here in our country, misleading and deceptive ads that promote gambling as a way to make money in just a little amount of money.

I don’t really get why you ( people) call it an “anti-gambling” ad when gambling isn’t even totally illegal in the country. There are still licensed casinos operating legally, so instead of treating it like it’s banned, the truth is the industry is regulated.

I’ve seen the video, and to me the message wasn’t saying “don’t bet on the team.” What it was really pointing out is that people should only gamble with money they can afford to lose, not with the savings of their kids.

Yeah, it is a great follow-up. It clearly tackles that gambling addicts don't stop even if they won a life-changing amount because, in reality, for the majority(maybe even all) of gambling addicts, it was not about winning money anymore, it was about gambling and the high they get when they gamble.

That being said, without the follow-up, I thought the first ad was funny when they showed that Germany won.

This is the new norms these days. People can do anything for fame and attention on the internet.

Such type of campaigns always end up giving the opposite effect and this type of ad needs to be really thought well before going into production. In the country where I live in the past there has been huge failed number of ads against alcohol and gambling. I think the only good advertising to target stop of gambling in a certain range of audience is not showing gambling ads at all and this many countries have agreed to be working the best to achieve the desired results. Gambling though can never be fought with such methods, only education can fight it in a good way to preserve youth of many countries from falling prey to gambling, I believe Singapore wanted to do just that at that specific time.

Countries that legalize gambling and profit from the gambling business should indeed create advertisements encouraging responsible gambling. Especially since their market is no longer local residents. Many tourists come there to visit large casinos that offer luxury. The government should indeed showcase casinos not as a shady business anymore, but as an entertainment business that is enjoyable.

And countries that have made gambling illegal should do a review and maybe make some considerations to those who gambles but are doing it in secret because of it is illegal.

It's not exactly anti-gambling, but a campaign to acknowledge the dangers of gambling and how it affects the people around you, something that people sometimes don't realize. A similar type of advertising is found in cigarettes, they're meant to advise you against it, showing the negative aspects and how it could affect people in your close circle. The part of Germany winning isn't on the advertisement itself, but no matter the outcome, you should never make such irresponsible moves.

This video was not intentionally done to promote gambling like influencers do. It was a blunder in the plot of the video. I wonder why the error was not discovered on time until it went viral. In the case of influencers, they only care about the money and nothing else. Influencers who engage in such deception should be punished because they are simply fueling addiction.

This is a hell of a promotion and not against gambling in any way, there was no campaign against gambling there, it was just a mere assertion and ending it with the Germany winning the world cup just feels like they're validating the actions of the last child's father, more like encouraging people to take big risks even though it has consequences.

The concluding part of the ad defeated it's whole purpose.

I watched the ad and it didn't look like an anti gambling ad to me unless that wasn't the full clip. That being said, I think that one cannot make an anti-gambling ad. It will not have the strongest effect as they think. My reason is because, people will always gamble no matter what. The type of ads that should be done should be on responsible gambling, underaged gambling and it's consequences and many others in this sense.

What a wicked world with a foolish father, he is taking all of his son savings to gamble, what if it turned a loss, the worst will still happened and could not be prevented on any match or event whereby he's going to gamble and lose everything, I wouldn't ha e been so naive about his actions if not that he's using the complete savings the child has to gamble.

I don't know why they create such video about gambling addiction, but in their description, they wrote like they're also speculating whenever Germany won or not.

Germany was second strongest team in 2014, so the chance to win is high, if they want to make sure they will lose, they should predict the unknown country who never won World Cup, Singapore for the example lol.

This is hilarious results for an ads that was supposed to discourage people to gamble but in the end it might create a different interpretation that we shouldn’t lose hope when gambling because everything is possible if you wish for it vibes. 

Honestly, Singapore can do better ads than that by showing real effect of gambling to the family rather than a situation that the child that is hoping for his father to win just for the sake of their future finance.

You've seen the campaigns where a guy drinks and then crashes his car, and an entire family dies because of him. That's what campaigns are for: to make people reflect. The mere fact that these campaigns are carried out is already a positive thing. Whether they work for everyone or not is another story. The point is not to overcomplicate the analysis. The truth is that each of us has to get involved in the conversation about gambling addiction, of course, but simply bringing it into the conversation is not enough.
