I’m not even sure how such a thing happens, or is discovered, but apparently Walmart brand frozen shrimp in their stores has been found to be radioactive…

https://x.com/dexerto/status/1957900458149744898

I did not have this on my bingo card… Anyone have any educational or hilarious comments about this situation? I’m very curious how the shrimp became radioactive and exactly how radioactive… Granite radioactive or flux capacitor radioactive?

I'd be far more concerned if they weren't radioactive, given that the only way that can happen is if they're over 80 years old and stored in a sealed container to avoid fallout from nuclear weapons testing, which has contaminated literally everything on Earth since then. And that's not even counting naturally-occurring radioactive materials released into the environment by industrial processes such as mining. Given all the fear-mongering around low-level radiation, I can't even pretend to be concerned by this radioactive shrimp until I know how it compares to bananas.

EDIT: Found a more useful source for this story: edition.cnn.com/2025/08/19/health/radioactive-contamination-shrimp-walmart-fda

Quote from: CNN
The levels of cesium detected – about 68 becquerels per kilogram – were well below the FDA’s intervention level of 1,200 Bq/kg. Still, regulators issued the advisory out of caution, citing the potential risks of cancer from long-term, low-dose exposure and problems at the supplier’s facility.

68 becquerels per kilogram is only 4.5 bananas per kilogram - nothing to panic about and certainly not indicative of a major nuclear whoopsie.

That was sort of my first question.  How radioactive?  Lots of things are radioactive in our lives.  The example I used was granite, but bananas are another good example to use to illustrate this point.  It sounds like it isn't a big deal, but I find that a bit hard to believe.  Walmart hasn't exactly always errored on the side of caution when it comes to their customers (they use apeel on their fruit for God's sake).  My guess is that while it may have measured in the official tests as not harmful, they must have had some indication that wasn't the case for the entirety of the shrimp or I don't believe they would have issued this recall.

Granite radioactive or flux capacitor radioactive?

They also wouldn't tell customers to just throw away the contaminated products if that were the case; radioactive materials do not belong in household trash. The fact that nobody is concerned about spreading contamination further through improper waste disposal suggests that this is nothing more than the usual unscientific fear-mongering.

We have been wearing glow-in-the-dark, radioactive wristwatches since at least the 1950s. Eat the radioactive shrimp.

Ya, I see tons of lightbulb manufacturers making sure people don’t toss their compact fluorescent light bulbs in the trash. Certainly companies don’t do things like dump harmful forever chemicals into rivers and oceans. They would never dream of understating a hazard and letting people throw away evidence of their mistake. Walmart was just being overly cautious because they error on the side of public health. Everybody knows that.

If we are concerned about radioactive food, then we should also talk about how radioactive bananas are, in the same manner there are some nuts which are collected in Brazil which are pretty much radioactive, because those nuts trees naturally concentrate heavy metals from the ceiling.

I would only be careful of those shrimp happened to be radioactive enough to be poisonous, but it is always to be safe than sorry when comes to ionizing radioactivity.
Luckily for all of us, it is pretty easy to anyone to measure radiation with a counter bought on the internet.

look at all the people above getting emotional without even looking at the FDA alert
https://www.fda.gov/food/alerts-advisories-safety-information/fda-advises-public-not-eat-sell-or-serve-certain-imported-frozen-shrimp-indonesian-firm

if your getting triggered by a twitter post, you need to switch off twitter..
.. atleast try to look deeper than social media before just getting emotional
.. there are too many topics on this forum of silly people getting easily triggered and just posting on this forum due solely due to social media, where they dont even take 5 seconds to find some credible source

so yes i spoonfed you the FDA alert for all those above questioning the topic creators post they made that only references twitter post.
something the topic creator could have done would be to use for 5 seconds to search google

anyway the FDA says
Quote
At this time, no product that has tested positive or alerted for Cesium-137 (Cs-137) has entered the U.S. marketplace. FDA is working with distributors and retailers that received product from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati after the date of first detection of Cs-137 by Customs & Border Protection (CBP), but from shipments that did not alert for Cs-137, to recommend that firms conduct a recall. In conjunction with other information, FDA determined that product from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati violates the Federal Food, Drug, & Cosmetic Act in that it appears to have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby it may have become contaminated with Cs-137 and may pose a safety concern.

border customs detected imported shrimp containing cesium-137 and all tested imports were seized. however some might have slipped through and entered processing plants which could have contaminated machinery and then could have contaminated further produce due to possible unsanitary conditions unknown to the FDA, so as a precaution they want to recall all shrimp products between certain dates from certain supplier. and have stopped products from certain supplier until they pass some health/hygiene checks and met the border/customs standard to be allowed to import produce again

I DO NOT TRADE OR ACT AS ESCROW ON THIS FORUM EVER.
Please do your own research & respect what is written here as both researched opinion & information gleaned from experience. many people replying with insults but no on-topic content substance, automatically are 'facepalmed' and yawned at

I don't particularly like shrimp. In Walmart, I pass it up for other fish. But maybe after viewing this thread, I will get some WM shrimp. After all, if the radiation hurts me a little, think of what it is doing to the germs that are running around loose in my body... and the parasites.

Radiation good; medicine bad.

This is a wild clip. Congress being told that eating the radioactive shrimp will turn people into the monster from the movie alien or at least make it so whoever eats it grows another ear. I’m not sure if this was supposed to be serious or not, but certainly it is not scientifically accurate. Shocking to watch…

Sad I wish mine looked like this it was just rather black darkish and red color... Sad but That is OG nasty asf compared to this awesome glow worm you produced. Here is what I think put back in public schools how to teach kids to be self sufficient or can we get a bitcoin remake like you know where monero succeeeded lol?

Probably 95% of the dangerous uranium scare tactics are government sponsored fear tactics... fake news. The reason is to keep people from powering their cars and houses with a natural fuel (uranium), that could easily power them for almost free for 100 years. Such would shut down the need for oil (almost), and would change the whole political structure of the world.

I think the reason is that they don’t want people making nuclear bombs in their garage. Bob Lazar showed how anyone could power their car with water if they were allowed to have access to the right materials (it’s on YouTube, search for it). We could all be powering everything with water, but I think it is a case of ‘this is why we can’t have nice things.’

Before talking about how one could power ones car with water you should take a look at something called "first law of thermodynamics" and "second law of thermodynamics", in order to use water as fuel one needs to invest more energy than it is generated  during it's ignition.
Ironically, what BD says about filing cars with uranium makes more sense than powering cars with water and it would not break any law of physics, it would just elevate radioactive pollution within all urban centers in the United States.  Roll Eyes

Powering cars with water is something that the oil companies are hiding... so they can make money off the people.

The physics that they teach in schools is only a sliver of how things really work.

Wouldn't it be neat if a person could eat a little WM shrimp, and then blast off from his toilet like a rocket to the moon? Grin
