That's a nasty one.  Emergency patches for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS have been issued:

Exploits come and go, but this is quite a nasty one as you said. However: No mobile wallet, no hack. It is simple but people like to make their lives complicated and risky.

Yeah I just updated literally a few minutes ago. Did an update last week and low and behold another update was released yesterday and it seems to fix this exploit.

Its pretty scary if you think about it. Due to that leak that we had a few years ago, many phone numbers were exposed, and its very easy for someone to just send a photo over. The fact that this is possible is scary. Normally you think clicking some link or running some executable is dangerous, but opening a photo shouldnt be a way to sneak in malware. Its good that Apple was quick and released a fix.

There were reports of a few users whose wallets were drained. No idea if its related to this but they were all mobile wallets and they all had pretty good security.

Reading from the news, the exploit seems very serious, maybe it's even better to take a step further by securing wallet just to make sure.

This is why an air gapped cold wallet is always better for self custody. No internet access so no chance of exploit.
