Hello,
I upgraded the CPU on my Octominer X12 Ultra from the stock low-power CPU to an Intel Core i5-7600K. I’m using the system for btcrecover, and the performance improved by about 30% with the new CPU.
However, under sustained CPU load the system becomes unstable — it freezes, and then the BIOS automatically resets to default settings.
I’m trying to clarify a few points regarding power requirements for higher TDP CPUs on this board:
1) Is it necessary to supply power to the ATX12_DCIN1 connector for stable operation with higher TDP CPUs?
2) If yes, can this connector be powered directly from the integrated PSU board inside the Octominer chassis (see Image 2)?
3) What cable specification is required (connector type)?
4)Could someone provide the correct pinout and polarity for the ATX12_DCIN1 header?
Any insights from others who have run higher TDP CPUs on Octominers would be very helpful.
Thank you!

okay  the cpu you are using can pull over 200 watts. it has a tdp of 91 watts  but if you over clock it will do 200 watts if cooled enough

So the first question I have is how are you cooling it?

Not how are you feeding power to it.

read this to understand you need to worry more about cooling then any thing else

I’m not overclocking the CPU — it’s running at stock settings.
I’ve been monitoring the temperatures, and the maximum I’ve seen is 73 °C.
Cooling is handled by the stock Intel cooler, since there’s no room in the Octominer X12 Ultra for a larger heatsink.
That said, the chassis has very powerful fans, which provide strong airflow and keep the system overall very well cooled.

If needed, I could possibly switch to a low-profile cooler like this one:

Update:
I connected the ATX12_DCIN1—nothing blew up—and refreshed the thermal paste. The CPU temperature now stays below 65 °C.
However, the system still freezes. I also changed the BIOS settings: PL1 to 20 W and PL2 to 25 W, but it still freezes.
Honestly, the BIOS doesn’t seem stable with this CPU.
Any ideas?

what was the stock cpu? was it a i5 6500t?

the bios may not be stable for 7000 series.

and stable for 6000 series.

Did you have a pentium in it?

it has been a while since I used my octopus miner12  gear.

I checked and it says this is the stock cpu below

Intel G3900 CPU
The Octominer X12Ultra is a mining chassis built for smart GPU mining. This model houses 12x AMD RX 470 mining cards, which each have 8GB of GDDR5 memory. This model also includes an Intel G3900 CPU (2.8 GHz 2 core), as well as 4GB of DDR3 RAM.

I also see some with

which was yours?

also you are looking for passwords so this may not be the right section to be in.

It was an Intel G4400T CPU with 12× RX470 GPUs.
This is a hardware issue, not a problem with btcrecover—I’m just using the Octominer to recover a forgotten password.

The bios may not be up to using a i5 7600k

Did you see if the bios is fully up to date

The bios  is really old 2021

I’m using the latest BIOS.
I know it’s old (2021), but so is the CPU (2017).

It looks to me like 2 seperate problems, however, an incompatibility between the  Mobo  and/or BIOS with the new CPU could be responsible for both.

Crashes under sustained load are usually caused by too much heat or not enough power. Troubleshooting usually starts with a minimal system, meaning one PSU and one GPU. If that's stable build from there until it breaks.

BIOS reseting to default could be as simple as a bad CMOS battery or a fault with the BIOS itself.

I think I need a different CPU that’s confirmed to work with the Octominer motherboard.
With the Celeron G4400T, I get around 23 kp/s, while with the i5-7600K, I was able to reach 33 kp/s.
Does anyone have recommendations for a stable CPU that’s known to work well with this board?

I hope this helps someone, I tested the Intel Core i5-6600 on the Octominer X12 Ultra, and it works without issues.
