Is the discovery of crude oil a curse or blessing to Nigeria

Before the discovery of crude oil in oloibiri , Bayelsa State in the South South region of Nigeria, Agriculture was the main source of exportation and income . Nigeria export agricultural produce like Cocoa, rubber, groundnut,etc and the economy was good to an extent. The currency was strong against the dollar and the economy was good but as soon as crude oil was discovered everything change.The country abandoned Agriculture which was the main source of income for the country and everything turned upside down.

The discovery of crude oil was never a substitute to the agricultural engagement the Nigerian people engaged in. in an ideal case, it is supposed to be an advantage whereby the nation could diversify into the oil sector and the agricultural sector and in the process generate multiple revenue from those sectors.

Nigeria as a nation has witnessed growth in all ramification through the discovery of crude oil only that the government has not used the resource the right way but have only over depended on it such that other sectors now suffers negligence in such a manner that anything that affects the price of oil and dollar always affects the price of goods locally. with the fertile land we have, we can still go back to the agricultural sector and still do well in it.

The discovery of crude oil in Nigeria is definitely a curse in my own opinion. Nigeria was doing very well even before the discovery of crude oil on the 60s and evert sector of the economy was really developing rapidly.
This discovery of crude oil in the 60s really affected a lot of things in Nigeria,  like agriculture, mining etc. Before the discovery of oil agriculture has been our mainstay and it was really helping the economy to develop, we used to export a lot of agricultural products like cashew, palm fruit etc, but the discovery of crude oil has collapsed our agriculture, because everyone now concentrates on the crude and have abandoned other sectors of the economy and that has really set Nigeria back. In my opinion I think it's a big carse, because I feel.the country would have been better without the discovery of crude oil. I am open to critic.

The discovery of crude oil in Nigeria is a curse, before oil discovery Nigeria was doing very well in agriculture , the economy was good,the prices of goods and services were very cheap amd affordable. Without crude oil Nigeria's economy was booming and there was cash in the society. Nigeria depended solely on agriculture and was into exportation of cocoa, groundnuts, pineapples and palm oil.

As far as I'm concerned since the discovery of crude oil, Nigeria has suffered some set backs, there is no functional refinery to refine the crude, instead we export it to Europe for them to refine it for us, whereas if we have had a working refinery, the rate of unemployment would have reduced, the discovery of oil has made us neglect farming that was once our source of income, we have oil yet fuel is very expensive.so it's a curse, if you do a feasibility study you will notice that countries that are into agriculture is doing better than us that have oil.

I disagree with you on the area of laziness you talked about, 80 percent of Nigerian youths fight tirelessly to archive from the mineral resources we are blessed with but all to know avail even people from the producing communities and state. The presence of oil has brought about  more education and quest for upgraded knowledge all because they believed there will be a better life after acquiring but reverse is the case instead the benefits goes to our rich and political representatives.

Crude oil was first discovered in Oloibiri in bayelsa state by shell and they gained nothing after there relentless push to acquire the desired skills but all wealth where channeled to the representatives and leaders of the country while the people servive by farming and fishing when they are  richly blessed, or is it Rivers state that have a lot of oil blocks yet all employments are coming elsewhere instead of from them. If you carefully peruse what I wrote, you understand that laziness was on the part of the leaders, they squandered the resources, they didn't put into good use the money that they had during the oil boom, as they were not able to account for infrastructures, good roads and a lot. The laziness was not on the part of the youths but on the leadership,  they didn't see the oil boom as a time to invest rather they saw it as harvest time. The things you outlined that has brought to us this far, if we compare it to the amount of oil and revenue they get from this oil, it is not justifiable. by now we wouldn't have been underdeveloped when compared to the level of fund's we've gotten from oil.

Crude oil is a natural substance that is settled beneath the earth crust, and what ever that is natural comes from God, and for this reason, the discovery of crude oil more especially in the region of Niger Delta is a blessing to the people and not a curse.

Before the discovery of crude oil in the region of Niger Delta Nigeria was dealing on Agricultural products, but the discovery of crude oil brought about massive development, enabling the oil rich states, like Rivers State, Bayelsa State, Akwaibom, and Delta State to get huge allocation and which has also helped in the development of those states and the country at large.

Unfortunately, our leaders have attached greed in the leadership of the country, now instead of them to utilize the blessings that God has bestowed in our country Nigeria, their minds became twisted as they exploit the country's blessings for their own selfish interest.

Let me say it this way, the discovery of crude oil in Nigeria was supposed to be a blessing to us, which it truly is but in reality it became a curse to us because of how it was managed by us especially our leaders from regime to regime have only handled it in a worse manner. Oil brought money to us as a country but at same time, oil also brought greed, corruption and laziness. Instead of production, our leaders focus shifted to sharing revenues and dividends they call it abi.

Our leaders just abandoned agriculture and other sectors that once made Nigeria a strong country but instead of oil money to build industries, develop our infrastructure or improve our education system but they just kept on lavishing the money. We can’t say this is a curse to Nigeria because other countries also discovered oil and it was being put into good use by their leaders. It is our leaders to blame and not the crude oil we’re being blessed with as a form of gift from God. When we have the current leaders ousted, maybe we will get to see changes in many sectors in Nigeria that has been built and filled up with corruptions.

Since Nigeria got our independence and the leaders who fought for her independence were eliminated, it is that same set of people, same lineage that have been ruling Nigeria till date. They give it to themselves and share our Nigeria fortunes within themselves. We need a total eradication of this people from the system before we may see changes in the country, hopefully if happens soon because we’re not lost the hope yet.

As for allocation, the states blessed with those mineral resources receives big ones the question is do those allocations gets to the poor masses of is it just for the rich.
The allocations given to those states where meant for the development of the state but misused by our representatives and the remaining converted into individual pockets by our corrupt political representatives leaving the state wallow in darkness when light have been given to them.
