I really don't know much about the gambling culture in Australia,  but if what you have said is true, then Australia has just found a way to reduce casino gambling. It's a proven truth that when people get easy access to things they tend to lose interest in it, but when it's not accessible to them, they tend to want it more. So I think this is just a strategy by the Australian government to reduce it.
On the other hand it might just be the fact that this generation tend to enjoy playing sports betting and are not really interested in casinos. Either ways Australian government has just found a way to reduce gambling.

This is normal in every industry, people want to test the new product and the effect will be lesser patronage for the existing products, later the consumers will determine which one is better for them. Government should allow gamblers to continue their activities but they should sanction gambling companies and casino owners of they what to reduce the high rate of gambling on the country, they have a regulatory body that can monitor the activities of gambling companies in their country but it they decide to chase gambler is instead of addressing the matter in a way that will not put fear in the mind of the gamblers they may be encouraging gamblers to look for different means to gamble without the government noticing them. What am speculating would happen is that the people there would now have alternatives to switch over that they wouldn't just easily get bored with just when it was slot machines only. For sports betting it doesn't get boring betting on them because there's always intriguing and thrilling results in almost every weekend especially for football. I don't think that Australia's wide acceptance of casino products became their own enemy because it has nothing to do that. Some people prefer casino products and some people prefer sportsbook. Which one is popular partially depends on the culture of the people. For example, if sports are very popular in a certain country, there is a high chance that sports betting is also very popular there as well. It should be depend on the sports, if the sports are no longer exciting due to lower rivalry and there are no great new generation, it would affect sports betting. I see very young generation e.g. Gen Alpha isn't really interested in sports.

This would be a problem in near future, probably next 3-4 decades.

People are losing faith in casinos and there are many reasons for the increase in interest in sports betting. If you are referring to physical casinos, then yes, most likely they lose some clients. However, this can't affect online casinos since most of them have sportsbook and casino games. So, I can't see how they are losing.
