I was curious and the internet is not like it is now, the internet was a careful and generous teacher

everyone had a site without banners, without frills but with lots of technical information that I read avidly, reading Snowden's book I found myself in his words

I started to frequent places with Linux as the operating system, the first version of Linux I tried was Debian, it was a bloodbath, I couldn't get it to work, so I temporarily switched to Mandrake Linux, which exists today
and then a slip in the LUGs and social centers, where we shared, where we created together and I grew up like that, on bread and open source

The thing that made me change completely was the manifesto of "the mentor" I found myself in those words then I decided that I would become a hacker in some way, on irc it was common to call me "lamer" but I studied and studied trying to learn, my first passion was obviously computer security, but obviously there were no jobs, those who did security were considered on a par with criminals and looked at with suspicion

I remember hacking into several servers and patching them, leaving a message to the owner that said something like, "Try to take care of your servers. Today you got help from a good hacker, but tomorrow, who knows, you might meet a bad person."

servers sometimes even big ones, like some ESA servers, my aim was just to prove that I was good, but not to prove it to anyone, to prove to myself that I had a purpose, a goal, a mission in some way

with this background, open source, ethical security, obviously I preached with an open source evangelist everywhere even in hardware, in economics, in drugs, I hated, I strongly hate patents

I couldn't help but embrace bitcoin as a technology... I was there, I'm here looking out the bitcoin window, in the past just a voyeur and I bitterly regret not having believed in the project before, my life would be very different and much simpler if I had had faith (*)

So I followed the forum, I read about the project but in a sceptical way, I had already overcome the idyllic phase of open source and the discussions with the other "peers" hung over me
when I talked about openhardware people laughed at me, they told me it was impossible... today raspberry pi, arduino before, many hw wallets, prusa 3d printers, pinephone, fairphone... now I can say openhardware without being laughed at
And bitcoin? The bastion of financial freedom, the open economy.

I've taken many steps, I've seen many people disappear, go away, very few have remained since I started (probably enjoying the fruits of their faith, lucky them) new people, new projects, new things

I'm very happy to have known the forum, to have known so many people, to have known bitcoin, to have read very strong people like Hal

Bitcoin has changed me, just as Linux has changed me and open source has changed me, it has made me improve as a person, as a man, as a programmer and as a father.
I see things differently, I am more aware of some aspects of modern society

so back to (*) don't make the same mistake I did, don't be foolish, don't be unbelievers, believe in bitcoin as you believe in linux (which changed the world)

It's not easy to have withstood all you had to just get to where you are now. All I could pick from what you have said is that consistency pays and it also helps to believe in yourself cause if you don't, no one would and I'm glad that you didn't lose courage when people looked at you as strange when you mentioned open hardware because the sad thing is that people would always view you as weird when they can't relate on the same dimension as you.

You are a wonderful person. I can't imaging hackers of nowadays gaining access to someone's server and all they could do is to leave a friendly warning. You were such an ethical hacker. If I may ask, do you still do hacking till date?

I read that you regret now believing bitcoin as much as you believed linux, What do you mean, I mean you had been around from the early days. Is it that you didn't contribute to the network as much as you think you were supposed to contribute or you didn't accumulate much bitcoin when it was worth nothing because of disbelief.

13 is a big number as long as bitcoin is concerned, congratulations. 13 years ago I was busy writing exams to gain admission into different universities just to learn education that expired in the previous century.

Your story is similar to those I read about some of the inventors like Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, Thomas Edison, etc. who were fascinated by technology at a tender age. I read through this thread over and over again not because I didn’t understand but because I felt it deep down being a weird guy around and finally finding somewhere you feel more comfortable not with people you know but anonymous/pseudonymous  community. I had similar experiences. Well babo wish you a greater time out there and keep soaring high!
Few years back when I registered here, saw bitcoin at some low price compared to this day but didn’t get to put a dime not because I was afraid or anything but college student with no personal source of income only depending on family but today we are getting there. Your story is encouraging and deep learning into tech is the down lesson for me since I’ve got more time (age).

Sincerely I must say the truth that your post your message has opened my eyes and mindset to understand that life is very simple and easier when we understand the narrative, I mean, where life is taking us to and walks towards that direction it would be that easier and swifter for us, and as it may be, bitcoin is one thing that has brought many people together especially in this forum, it unite and connects people from different place and countries across the globe.

13 years is never a 13 days or 13 months, this is a decade plus and is not that easy to remain active here, just as you said many has come and go and yes you are active and even though at some point you felt so discourage but was happy you gained courage back to continue scaling flawlessly in the space, and here today you have gained vast experience, meet lot of projects and people across the forum.
