Jess this is very sad if a police officer could do such a thing. It is a way of saying we can't trust anyone when it comes to issues related to Bitcoin or cryptocurrency. Yes you are right it's likely that he reporteed it, and they used that information against him. An ex MLA  and others were also involved. It is  certain that the system is corrupt no doubt. Well regardless of how he got into the trap is all based on how managed his identify and the implications of getting revealed to the wrong people that are not worth to keep secrets secret without compromising.
The police does evil behind and the legislators are all feeding fats of their pockets with public funds. So there is absolutely no one to be trusted because most people are on that official disguise but are evil in the mind to extort others without undermining their duties are primarily to protect the people and their belongings once it is a value that is so much attractive to them.

Our language can become an enemy. There are similar stories of those who had cryptocurrencies being persecuted by bandits. People, due to their naivety or vanity, boast about their savings, after which they get into unpleasant situations. But there is an even more stupid story (I can't find the link) abouta guy who did not have a lot of funds in bitcoin who told his friends about it, wanting to establish himself in their eyes, but he was unlucky with his friends, as they beat him up harshly and demanded that he give them the seed phrase from his "fictional" wallet. Therefore, it is always necessary to be modest and not pretend to be someone you are not.

It is a disgusting story to be honest, and all I can say is that nothing surprises me anymore. It's really sickening to see how people forcefully chase after other people's hardwork without any shame. I wonder how the victim managed to bring the case up, knowing how corrupt the system could be, because 2018 to 2025 already tells enough. I'm not an expert, but does it take that long to carry out investigation and convict those who are guilty?.

Of course, it is advisable for everyone to treat their privacy with importance, and not necessarily showing off in an environment that would endanger them. But at the same time, I think this kidnapping issue wasn't a case of privacy failure per se. I don't know what actually transpired, but like you said, the victim must have reported the issue to them.

I believe this case has opened my eyes to the fact that the problem isn't just a simple crime, but also about the fragility of the legal system that occurs when the integrity of the authorities collapses. How could a businessman who should be seeking protection be targeted by the authorities themselves? (It could be a comprehensive or a small group, but that's my assumption.) If those mandated to uphold the law can become perpetrators, this problem deepens. There's a moral crisis and a very weak oversight system.

I think the lesson to be learned, and a very good one, is that we shouldn't easily rely on outside parties in sensitive matters. I agree with @_act_ on this, especially when it comes to digital assets or personal information. Blind trust without control only opens up opportunities for abuse by others.

Those who are supposed to provide security for the people can also be influenced by money. Everyone has a greedy nature. It's just that those who cannot control themselves will surely be influenced to commit crimes. Now they are facing the consequences of their actions. Money can indeed change a person's character, which may not be seen by others.

This is making me very much afraid everyday because you don't know who to trust anymore when it comes to Bitcoin. If the law enforcement and people who swore to protect lives and properties will constitute serious threat to people, who then should we believe? This is only means that you don't need to reveal everything even to the closest person will betrayed you even family when it comes to money, i have seen families who don't care even if they are siblings, there should be a secret that you should not share to them, they might change if they found out that you have money, at the start they will borrow but if they are ignored or not favor to be given again they might do something bad in the future.

Such an unfortunate story, however I like it ends. If this were a movie I would easily have predicted how it ends. And it always ends with the Villians facing the consequences. Police officers and security agents in general are supposed to uphold the highest level of the law and not be breakers of it. That these police officers got sentenced to jail for a crime they committed over five years ago is reminder to every bitcoin scarmmers, hackers and thieves that they will also end up in jail.

These stories though pathetic, is not strange to me. I have always learnt that you can't trust anyone with your bitcoins, not even your spouse, except you can prove beyond reasonable doubt that they can be trusted.

This is also another reason why it is good to split your bitcoin holdings into different wallets. If you have emergencies like this and compelled to discuss your private keys, you will only be losing the bitcoins in one wallet and not everything you ever worked hard for.

Investing in bitcoin requires some level of smartness to be able to defeat scammers, criminals and hackers. I am glad the criminal officers got their punishments.

The bracket of the "anyone" not to trust becomes very scary because how about your partner, your siblings, your parents etc. Are you just going to go through life doubting and not trusting anyone? seems a little paranoid to me.

I think it we better not to trust anyone until you can trust someone which means that your trust should not just be giving to anyone no matter who they are to you, until you are sure that they can be trusted. This occurrences are becoming very repetitive and it's time we have to sit up and take our privacy very important. There was also an incident that happen in my place some time ago, thieves attack a compound and they went straight to the room of a guy that was into cryptocurrency, I didn't witness it but news had it that the guy was into crypto and he had enough money. No body knows how the thieves knew about it but there must have been someone that the guy trusted with his investment information that give him up to the criminals. We need to be very careful with whom we give our informations to.

I remember a thread about those who have been physically attacked and have their bitcoin stolen, Physical Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency Attacks that Have Been Reported Worldwide, the op also fell victim of physical abuse by the police.

All these makes it more skeptical for me to trust law enforcement agencies and I'm even more cautious of them, aside this friends stories is among another reason to see they are still men and can hurt someone .

Although this goes beyond them anything about money be careful how you relate to others about it even when you are in a serious need of their help.

It's scary reading stories like this but sadly they do exist. Police are humans and they too are in search of money but it is a shame when the people who are called to serve and protect ends up being the one spare heading the extortion of the citizens.
In this can I don't think the person kidnapped was careless. He wanted to get his stolen funds back and involved the police who afterwards masterminded his kidnap. This is a case of the people you ran to for help can be as bad as what you need their help for and it is very scary.

So always be cautious on who you trust, on who you share private details and information, because they could be your worst nightmare more than you’ll ever know.

My take on this, never trust anyone. When money is involved, always take being cautious and careful on your decisions. Anyone can be good today, and turn your enemy the next day. So do not be too trusting, even if they are the authorities.

I haven't seen any major news channel covered about this news but it looks too huge because ex MLA of current ruling party will become a sensational news and also ready they are facing lot negatives like vote chori. I will update whether it is real or not based on the media coverage.

Privacy is important but on such cases it is inevitable, it's a serious problem of the failure of laws and look how much longer it took for the victim to get justice and even he is not a poor because we are talking about millions here. SO imagine how this will ended up if we are talking about someone who is just a middle class guy and lost a few thousand dollars.
