If it is required by law, blame the lawmaker not the wallet company.

I know Ledger will do something that will not disappointed about them again and this is another one. Maybe in the next 1 or two years, they will come up with another thing again. Or maybe they will come up with it within months.
While you should avoid using Ledger anyway, the blame is misdirected. I doubt anyone would spend money implementing these things unless they were required to do so.
It  would have been stated if they want to follow regulations.

Wallets are created in a way they can avoid regulations but Ledger is trying to be of the the ways they can start government having control over noncustodial wallet.

If hardware wallets are like this, I will prefer wallets on airgapped devices.

As long as you can use it with other software, such limits would not do anything. Why would you even use Ledger Live at all except for app updates?
Some people like to use it because it supports many coins. Some people just like what comes directly from the company.

I still have a Nano S and I'm not going to get rid of it, but I already have a Trezor as my main wallet, and with everything Ledger has already done, it will likely lose even more users
Practically speaking, only those using the Ledger app will be affected, not the device itself, since it can be used with other wallets

However, the decisions the company has been making are already quite misaligned with BTC, freedom, and decentralization
Many people, many on this forum, no longer believe in anything about Ledger

It  would have been stated if they want to follow regulations.
No, this is not true. There are even cases where you are not allowed to explicitly state that something is because of regulations, you have to talk around it.  Wink Think about it from a common business sense. Why would someone spend money of their company to develop something like this unless they have to? It costs money, it does not bring money and it gives negative points on the brand for many users in the crypto space. It is just a negative overall.

Wallets are created in a way they can avoid regulations but Ledger is trying to be of the the ways they can start government having control over noncustodial wallet.
Again, there is no reason why Ledger would want to do this on their own. The Ledger Recovery was a thing that actually can generate money. While the idea was stupid and damaging to its brand, it had a business case (however flawed it was). This does not have one.

Some people like to use it because it supports many coins. Some people just like what comes directly from the company.
Many of those coins have their own wallets, that is my point. Do not use Ledger Live.

If hardware wallets are like this, I will prefer wallets on airgapped devices.
Support Trezor, they deserve it.

Trezor is a good hardware wallet that I also recommend to people. We are following the wallet closely on this forum. But I prefer an airgapped hardware wallet instead and the one I prefer most among them is Foundation Passport.

About Ledger Nano, I do not like the wallet right from the moment I know about open source and close source wallets. I was surprised that people can use a wallet with close source secure element. But people will also be people with limited information. Government or no government, it has not been a wallet that I can recommend.

Why only as a temporary measure? I think it's obvious, if your transactions can potentially be blocked, then such devices/apps should not be used. Ever.
I didn't know I had to ''translate'' my obvious post.
This is temporary measure for owners of ledger hardware wallet, since they probably can block transactions only via ledger live app.

It is, yet so many people seem to love the taste of it and don't care about its toxicity in the least.
Last few years proved that people love self-destruction, and I am not surprised they are still using ledger, maybe because they have nice ads and commercials  Tongue

You mean they could block updates for Ledger devices or apps on them, right?
When anyone purchase ledger crap they can't use it until they connect in with ledger live app, and it's impossible to bypass this step with other apps.
You also can't update device without ledger live, and nobody knows how exactly they are going to add more restrictions.

I understand what you mean, but those who need to activate their devices or update relevant apps to continue using them are still free to use VPN to avoid any potential blocks by Ledger. The same applies to those who wish to send transactions to sanctioned addresses, all they need to do is choose the right VPN server. A jumpscare is not the real threat. Wink

Sure, sounds like a good thing but it is definitely not for everyone. I like the diversity of devices and features, as long as they have at least some basic standards of security that I would require of all wallet providers to have.

Needing to use a VPN because Ledger can't be trusted is the real threat.
Wrong. Firstly, that is not a threat at all. You are just bypassing some restrictions by using a different IP. Secondly, if you can't trust Ledger's software or hardware then using a VPN will not help you with anything.

I didn't say using a VPN is a threat.  I said needing to use one.  In other words, if Ledger's code is so unsafe that one needs to use a VPN because of it, that's proof Ledger's code shouldn't be used in the first place.  Ledger's code is poison.

You didn't understand my post then. If Ledger's code is so unsafe, using a VPN does not help at all. A VPN does not magically restore compromised security. It can help you with privacy and anonymity, but it can't help with software that is unsafe.

This thread has nothing to do with discussing the length or safety of Ledger's code. Please, read OP.

Regarding OP.

Ledger's public commitment to blocking sanctioned transactions is merely the proactive step to cover their ass from facing similar sanctions.

They are not fools and clearly understand that there are countless ways to work around their measures jumpscares.See my posts above.

But if there’s anything from the authorities, they will demonstrate their commitment to distancing themselves from those who support entities under the sanctions.

From what I'm reading today it sounds like a new threat has emerged but the solution is the same.  Don't use hardware wallets.  They just aren't as well battle tested as software wallets and it shows.  The only time I ever see them pop into my news feed it is because of another hack of some kind.  Hardware wallets might be good as cold storage devices for some, but I would honestly not trust them for any sort of interaction with websites as it seems to always end up in disaster for someone.  Looks like Binance has just shut down all withdrawals until they get this latest threat figured out.  Be safe out there!

I assume you are referring to the latest supply chain attack on NPM package. In fact, all wallets that rely on JavaScript frameworks are vulnerable to this type of attack. Hardware wallet users should always check what they're signing on the wallet’s display if any at connecting to WEB3 apps that commonly use JavaScript. The fact that Binance has shut down all withdrawals suggests that this exchange also uses JavaScript in its codebase, which I find surprising. JavaScript has long been known to be an unsafe framework for crypto-related applications.

Thus, the message "Don't use hardware wallets" is at wrong place at the wrong time.

Wink
You have a serious problem if you think that using VPN is going to help you with ledger compliance and other crap Tongue

Ledger's public commitment to blocking sanctioned transactions is merely the proactive step to cover their ass from facing similar sanctions.
Who told you that?
Blocking transaction in wallet means they are working with government, simple as that.
They are making a dangerous first step witht their compliance crap that can be followed by other wallets and manufacturers.
Ledger is a poison aka virus that can easily spread.

I'm looking for cold wallets, and Trezor and Ledger were recommended to me. I'm starting my crypto investments, and this news makes me think a little more, analyze more before making this purchase. The most important thing in this type of wallet is security, which is the service purchased for its use. I liked the discussion of this information so we can stay tuned for the news.

I have resolved my problems with ledger more than two years ago by destroying my Ledger device Tongue. Did you do the same?

This is just your assumption.

My assumption is they did it just to cover their ass from the possible sanctions.

We are both assuming. No direct evidences.
