Perhaps it is just me, but anyone who is struggling mentally and needs some kind of escapism in order to keep their mind in place should not be recurrent gambler and try to escape reality with the help of randomness, casinos, bets and risking their own money.
There are other more healthy ways to escape reality for some hours, like playing videogames, learning some new skills (like drawing or speaking a new language). It's broadly true that these are the main drivers behind gambling but to what end? You could substitute the world gambling above with any type of addiction, none of these seem particularly exclusive to betting. People fall into a pattern of addiction often out of boredom or chasing a high they had in their first go (which will never be reproducible again to the level of joy it gave them - which was often because of other circumstances like the environment or being surrounded by friends). As I see it, based on what you've said, we could say that the four Es are actually a problem when excess is combined with the other three on the list, since those are very common reasons why people gamble, and it doesn't mean they're addicted or at risk of becoming addicted; it's simply the excess of everything that creates the problem. Even if we do it for fun, if there's excess, there will always be problems. You can gamble a little, but if when you do gamble you spend excessive amounts of money, there's also a problem. Such guys build such a naive and fast earning scheme with their own heads, which does not tolerate any criticism. If you are worried about losing, why don't people gamble based on how much they can afford?  If it will affect their mind or life when losing that kind of amount of money, then for me, it's much better not to gamble at all.
