Well, that's actually right but at least it will help some gamblers to realise that there is no gain in gambling recklessly or out of boundaries, which will make them to see gambling as game of entertainment and not the other way around and also, even if they have that the same mentality, they will understand that its important to keep their emotions in check ( though, it depends on individuals). And also its not bad for them to keep gambling with the hope that one day they will be luck to win, as far as they are gambling responsibly and also be able to avoid whatever thing that will lead them into becoming addicted

Sounds great reading this and I wish a lot of people who gambles can have this etch into their skull as people now are doing just everything to get quick money, and this has made it appear as though gambling is just one of those avenues to cash out big on income. i found a research which identified four psychological traits contributing to risk for problem gambling. these are the four Es: escape, esteem, excess and excitement.

escape: when people try to find an escape from stress and all their other problems through gambling, more problem arises and addiction happens
esteem: when people try to find their value through materialistic things and wins in gambling, addiction happens
excess: when people gamble excessively, that is when addiction happens
and excitement: people get excitement from gambling and they no longer know how to stop and that's when addiction happens

That is interesting article that you shared. I always had intuition that most of gambling addicts had deeper issues than just gambling and this article confirmed what I thought. It is clearly described what are traits and tendencies that make people more vulnerable to addiction. Everybody on gambling board should read this article and be aware of it.

Sorry but I disgree, in all the four Es you mentioned and the explanation of what their true meaning is, I learnt that only one is correct, and that is "Excess", when people gamble excessively, they definitely end up getting addicted, this one is right but the others are simply wrong..

I will run through each of it again for you..
1. Escape - people finding escape from daily stress from work and others through gambling does not make them automatically addicted to gambling, especially when they are gambling responsibly, excessive or irresponsible gambling is what leads to addiction.
2. Esteem - I don't even understand how or what esteem got to do with gambling, but I know that finding value in winning from gambling and as well, material things does not automatically lead to gambling addiction.
3. Excitement - there is no way a person would get excited from gambling and do not know how to stop, it makes absolutely no sense, even if the person is excited for winning, the  winning streak doesn't last forever, loses will come and the excitement will fade away, this doesnt lead to addiction either, again, irresponsible and or excessive gambling is the only E here that surely leads to addiction.

I could reply to numerous responses from here, since they seem to disagree with the "4 e:s" idea just for the sake of it.

But what are you disagreeing with exactly? Did you disagree with the publication, or are you just disagreeing with OP's descriptions? Because OP is referring to actual scientific research.

Those 4 E:s are psychological traits that have been linked to addiction. And while even researches see "excess" being most significant trait, rest of them are based on other researches, which are widely accepted by scientific consensus to be connected on gambling addiction. Whole study itself is just a survey tool for measuring anyone's vulnerability for gambling addiction.

If you want to discredit the research for these 4 traits, you need to go way deeper then discrediting some words, and how OP or you see them being connected.

Let me go trough them with you again with quotes from study where they describe what they meant by those words.

1: Escape.

the motivation to avoid aversive social interactions

2: Esteem

the need to bolster a fragile self-image.

3: Excess

the inability or unwillingness to inhibit or think about the consequences of destructive behavior

4: Excitement

You can dig deeper on the research which is all public, but i am not putting too much effort to this and linking everything, as i am not even sure if you read this response.

And maybe this is a translation issue, because that "excitement" you mentioned is definitely one of the main things that drive any psychological addiction. Even when you get bored to gambling and losing, your brain is rewired to think you get dopamine rewards from the excitement, that might not even come. So it takes time to unlearn it (or just bigger bets to activate it again.)

In short, your brain gets addicted to excitement of waiting for the reward, it's not addicted to money itself, but the mechanism and faulty reward loop.

Even beyond that a person can become a gambler due to a lot of reasons but these traits are common in many people.

Some people are playing to kill time, some are playing to double their money - point is why? Why is that person having free time? They must not be putting that free time to something that is good, or picking up a side hustle. Why does that person want to double their money - is it that they have a spending habit that is above the norm of the people of the same paygrade?

A lot of questions here that you can start finding answers to and eventually find out why that person even started gambling in the first place.

Most of the times, it's never the faults of the gamblers, because gambling misconducts and misconceptions can often be traced way back to how they got introduced to gambling. Most gambling sites and casino are not doing quite a great job in running ads  and promotions online because they are the number one people that make gambling look like it's just some place you just come and make some easy money. Sometimes, it's the people that introduce them to gambling, they are often the ones that fail to educate them properly on how gambling really works, maybe because even they lack such education.

If someone wins $30,000 in gambling and used $25,000 to solve his problem, gambling has done great for him. There are three main things every human being is pursueing in the world to achieve. To get money, either business or job, get marry and build or buy house then children so if a gambler wins such amount and build house, marry and buy car. Has gambling solve any problem for you? Are these four E's really the reason why people are addicted to gambling or its just your perception? I would always say that gambling addiction is a mentality issue and not really about jow excessively one gambles. I dont believe that gambling excessively would lead to addiction, when a gambler understands when to stop and it does not affect his daily activities you can't say that they are addicted.

Secondly,  I dont see how "esteem" in this situation would lead to gambling addiction? The explanation remains difficult to put together for better understanding so I dont agree on that. How does gambling help to maintain self esteem or rather give self esteem?

I'm not a psychologist, but what you're saying makes sense. I'd say people find their escape in gambling, but in my experience, things are usually different. Sometimes the escape becomes an obsession, especially when they can't control their emotions. That's why, in my personal opinion, what OP says is important, but they missed the most important thing: money management. What you're willing to lose is more important than discipline.

I agree, it is not universal or absolute that gambling can not solve any problem.  One example is that the person is getting bored and wants some amusement. The problem here is getting bored, and he wants to have an amusement.  So the person play in a gambling platform to solve his boredom.

Now, going back to the financial problem.  The person have financial problem, and he tried to gamble.  This situation is dependent on how "lucky" the person is.  If he is "lucky" enough it will solve his current financial problem but if he is not, then more problem can sprout from that situation.

It is the right thing to give distinction whether the actual answer is an absolute thing or not.  If it is circumstantial or depends on the result of the action, like the one example given by @Agbe, we should not give an absolute statement because the answer actually varies.
