I was checking some stats and this one really caught my eye. In 2019, legal sports betting in the U.S. only made around $0.9B. Fast forward to 2023, and it already hit $10.9B in revenue. That’s more than a ten-fold jump in just four years. Total wagers? Over $119B placed by Americans last year.
Makes me wonder, what’s fueling this surge? Is it mainly: * more states opening up to legal betting, *the convenience of mobile apps and live wagering, *or nonstop marketing that made betting feel “normal” already? Big question is, can this growth really last or is the U.S. just catching up after legalization? From under $1B to almost $11B in a few years, that’s huge. If it can happen there, could we see the same worldwide, or will stricter rules and backlash eventually slow it down? What do you guys think, is this real momentum or just temporary hype?

Many people did not go to work during covid-19 lockdown and they know about gambling from there. I am not sure but I read news about that at the time.
Definitely, more mobile phone capabilities to access the gambling site with ease and advertisments are one of the main reasons that people start to gamble. Gambling sites does not use advertisements to joke at all because they know its benefits.
The growth will continue.
It is not just happening in United States but also happening in countries that gambling is allowed.

These stats are already old. The growth has reached over 100b USD already and it's bound to grow as the industry expands in more states, sports and advertising bans are lifted nationwide.
The liberalization of this market has made it very easy to gamble on sports. Now gambling is a superbowl ad. the US was kind of a laggard in that. We can only expect the industry to keep growing because even 100b is not big for the US.

Many people did not go to work during covid-19 lockdown and they know about gambling from there. I am not sure but I read news about that at the time.
This is a combination of revenue from both online and land-based casinos. In fact, the pandemic played a big role in pushing people to transition into online gambling — kind of a blessing in disguise because it introduced a lot more people to it. I don’t have the exact breakdown between online and land-based, but I believe the bigger share is from online, especially with sports betting. It’s just more comfortable to place bets at home while watching the game live, so that side is probably a lot bigger. It is not just happening in United States but also happening in countries that gambling is allowed.
Depends on the country I guess. Take India for example, even though revenue is increasing, they don’t see it as a positive thing, that’s why they still ban gambling. So with no regulation, they don’t really benefit from the growing demand of the industry.

Big question is, can this growth really last or is the U.S. just catching up after legalization? From under $1B to almost $11B in a few years, that’s huge. The reason for this increase might be the combination of these factors. These states are now seeing the profitability of gambling. And this has made them make favourable policies to attract more gambling firms. Inflation and economic problems are making people seek other sources of income, which might include gambling. We cannot write off the convenience that online casinos offer and the aggressive marketing of many casinos. If it can happen there, could we see the same worldwide, or will stricter rules and backlash eventually slow it down?
What do you guys think, is this real momentum or just temporary hype?
There has been an increase in restrictions on gambling activities. Indonesia, India, the Philippines, etc, are currently restricting gambling activities due to a high rate of gambling addiction. We cannot predict government policies because a change of administration could lead to a change.

This happened because from the very start their policies weren’t strict and not really followed, so the problem only got bigger. Now their main action is just to stop gambling altogether, which is the wrong move. In the US, the rules were established from the beginning, and even though gambling revenue grew massively, addiction stayed at a controllable level. Other countries should learn from that, regulate the industry properly, not just make them comply once and then let them do whatever they want. In fact, in the US advertising is normal, but here in the Philippines some billboards were even removed just to stop people from gambling. Another thing is the poverty rate, the PH is still a developing country, so it’s hard to compare us with the US.

One thing that makes people to choose some lifestyle is the shifts is finances, work, economic and societal influence. If you take a look of how things, mostly the economic system, was in 2019 and then afterwards, you will notice some changes, many people are struggling to survive, most are depressed with the economic shift, tax increase, inflation hikes, work load doubled, people not stable in finance as before and then they see a way to clear off their head using betting or they get Influenced by other gamblers and day after day, the numbers keep going up. From my assumption, I just think that's what happened. The number increased because more people started gambling due to pressure about something or being influenced about something.

I'm not surprised. What I wonder is when that market will peak and become stagnant or even start to decline. But it looks like it has a few good years left. The bookies must be making a fortune, and if anyone on the forum living there is making consistent profits, they should take advantage now and invest part of what they are earning. This isn't going to last forever.

Friendly rules for betting speed up adoption, and we also can't ignore the fact that a mobile-friendly casino makes it a whole lot easier for people to gamble compared to walking down to the shop, and these numbers have been gotten because of gamblers using legal casinos to place bets, which might not have been so easy. If you are asking if this is temporary or if it's going to continue, I can't tell whateveris fueling that. Unless it's put to an end, then we will have more of that figure increasing in the coming years.

It's catching up. If you check the above statistics for states from the year next to legalization, you will see a barely 2x-3x increase in revenue, nothing even close to the initial momentum, so the growth will be there at least in pace with inflation, but it will not be the same as before, it's impossible mathematically, it would bypass the GDP of the US in a decade. The COVID-19 lockdown made online gambling popular. And the boredom of the lockdown led to an increase in gambling activities. So it's not strange to see this report.
It has nothing to do with covid , growth was 6x between 2018 and 2019, the lockdown happened only in 2020.

That is a significant jump. I see new casinos popping off everywhere off and on the forum, this explains why.
The growth of online casinos is a huge factor and so also is marketing. I could pick out the number of casino brands I saw during a football match several years ago, now it is everywhere. As the money inflow grows, the number of casinos do too and so does the amount going into marketing, this in-turn brings more money into it.

See the latest stats this 2025 https://sportsepreneur.com/us-sports-betting-in-2025/ The reason on why this situation happened is due for those things you have mentioned already. Accessibility of online sports book plus huge coverage of sports events make everything raise. I believe it will grow more especially that sports became more famous and lots of online sportsbook raising and doing some nice promotion just to catch lots of bettors attention. It will really get real momentum especially that everything goes digital and lots of people has an access on internet then can bet easily without getting to much issues.

All three of what you’ve said contributed to this, but to me, the revenue jump isn’t surprising, especially with the boom of online and crypto gambling. Even here in the forum, there are a lot of online casinos. Sports betting and casinos are also being advertised in big events and by known personalities. It has become so accessible that with just a mobile phone, you can gamble anytime. This isn’t just hype, it will eventually become a normal thing as the years go by.

While increasing from less than $1 billion to nearly $11 billion in just a few years is a huge number and a significant achievement, I expected the total betting volume in the United States to be greater than $119 billion. This seems small to me, given the size of the economy and the betting sector in the United States.
In any case, I expect the spread of online gambling and mobile apps to have greatly increased the availability and ease of betting. So I expect this number to continue to rise with the expansion of crypto casinos and the continued open approach to cryptocurrency.

The American market is indeed the largest in the world, and in betting it would also be a giant I believe that the mobile factor and advertising are two factors that have greatly contributed to increasing the volume of bets
With so many apps available today, it has become very easy to bet, and we see advertisements for casinos and sports betting houses all the time, in various sports
Add to that the fact that Americans like to bet, like sports, have many popular sports there, and there you have it: a giant market.

All of what you have in your list adds up to the growing gambling rate, and not to mention how everyone is busy searching for means to widen their income net to be able to manage the inflation in the cost of living. The current situation of finance in the world has forcefully made even those that ordinarily never thought they would any day gamble to now have a course to gamble in the optimism that some life changing financial rewards can be made from it.

I think that growth is inevitable and feels like a mix of all three factors you mentioned: legalization momentum, mobile ease, and heavy marketing. The question is whether regulators tighten things once social costs and get more attention. Could be real momentum if operators balance growth with responsibility, but if backlash kicks in, the curve might flatten fast. Do you think the industry can self regulate enough to keep the boom going? But were talking about American state here we all knew their pretty much rich and lots of users.

I think the convenience to do it on mobile is definitely the huge factor of this surge. I think it's poise for more growth unless there's some sort of acts or laws that will hinder people to gamble. I think this growth isn't only in the US but even third world countries has seen this surge in gambling, it may seems huge but there could be significant risks associated in it too considering addiction is a huge problem nowadays

Your speculation is absolutely correct, - US sports betting revenue is set to grow from a modest 2019 to nearly $ 10.9 billion in 2023, with Americans betting more than $ 119 billion that year, so a tenfold increase is not unexpected. yeah the main driver here has been more state legalization, as the new markets they create have grown more rapidly. Also, mobile apps and live inplay betting have made it extremely convenient, with massive brand and advertising campaigns being run to normalize gambling in recent years. Your question is, will it continue to grow? Yes, I think so for a while. Because the maturity of the market and more state legalization are giving a huge upside. But there are also problems ya, because regulation, advertising backlash and growing concerns about problem gambling could stifle growth or force stricter regulations. They may be affected by addiction and financial losses from online sportsbooks in the future, so the issue of social risk cannot be completely ignored.
