I'd rather go for scrypt. You could buy a gpu and start mining ltc. For now, there are no asics out so they still remain rentable as far as I know

IF your dead set on mining, definitely a rig. Note I didn't say scrypt. I personally think either x11, scrypt-n(adaptive), and scrypt-jane will probably be the algo's that are going to be the gpu miners algo. Keccak maybe. Leaning towards x11 because:
1. Use 30-50% less power 2. Less heat (I get 20 degrees celcius cooler) 3. "Faster" hash rates. (Since algorithm runs more efficiently, expect 3-4x faster hash compared to scrypt) 4. ASIC resistant*
* For now. Like every other algo, if there's enough interest in it, ASICS will be made. Eventually.

You could get around 300GHs from PBMining for $1000.

You could loose some of your $1000 by giving money to a cloud mining scam

Um what? No Scrypt ASICs? Ever heard of Gridseed?

Um what? No Scrypt ASICs? Ever heard of Gridseed? thoes aren't true scrypt ASICS as ASICS stand for application specific integrated circuit. And since gridseed can do sha256, they're not really ASICS now are they?

And since gridseed can do sha256, they're not really ASICS now are they? Semantics. But whatever, you're wrong regardless. An application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) /ˈeɪsɪk/, is an integrated circuit (IC) customized for a particular use, rather than intended for general-purpose use. Wikipedia linkJust because it can do two things doesn't mean it is "application specific". It still is not for "general-purpose use". Still, whatever you want to call it, a Gridseed device can hash Scrypt 360KHs and use only 7 watts and you can buy one from ZoomHash for $164.95 right now. Compare that to an AMD R9 290. Scrypt ASICs are here. Deal with it.

MY definition of an ASIC is when it beats a GPU at two ratios : $/hash and hash/watt Lets take a look: Gridseeds, 165 @ 360 kh/s (more like 300 kh/s, you doing some overclock on them) $/hash (165/360) : 0.45833333333333333333333333333333 hash/watt (360/7) : 51.428571428571428571428571428571 I decided not to go with r9 290, as at inflated prices right now, gridseed is an "ASIC" but take a look at r9 270 at $180 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127769$/hash (180/450) : 0.4hash/ watt (450/150) : 3 So as seen here, gridseed still does not beat the crucial $/hash ration that GPU's are so good at. In a couple months though, KNC miner's 250 mh/s @ astonishing $.04 kh/s, GPU is dead

You're also no calculating the electrical cost to run an R9 270 vs two Gridseed units. I would bet after a single month the Gridseeds are going to be more profitable. And 360KHs is a stable overclock (850Mhz) easily done in the HashRa GUI. The next generation GridSeed blades should actually be better than these annoying round thingies too.

Buy 2 BTC and be happy, that you just bought more BTC than a 1000$ in investment would have EVER mined. History is a good indicator...
