the other day I was thinking, what is the safest place to keep USDT/UCDC that I am not using now. Should I convert it and send back to bank account (I am not sure, never done it)? Or just keep in in hardware wallet? What if Tether goes bankrupt? so anyway, let's say one has USDT that is not needed immediately for the next couple of years, what to do with it?

A bank account? Good heavens, are you serious? Storing money where you have zero control, where a third party can freeze your assets, and where you're subject to the whims of fractional reserve. Why trust a highly regulated, insured financial institution when you can trust a small piece of electronics that gives you the keys? stop thinking about that dusty old bank account and buy a hardware wallet. Lock that USDT/USDC away in cold storage. Many hardware wallet support multi coins.
And your thought of Tether going bankrupt. It's a stablecoin, it's right there in the name. It's meant to be stable and it's pegged to another currency most especially the US dollar.

You need to invest to offset or outpace inflation, otherwise the " value" of your funds will decrease. If your country is not having noticeable inflation or if you are from United States, best is to convert in to fiat.
This is a bad idea. Inflation affects every country's currency. Some are a little less, some a little more, but ALL currencies depreciate. Be it fiat or USDT\C.

USDT and some other stable coins may be good for short-term holding when you expect bitcoin to decrease in price, but I would never hold USDT for long term. Take note that USDT isn't decentralized like bitcoin and even if you keep it in your non-custodial wallet, it can still be frozen. I recommend reading the topic created by mk4. [UPDATED] PSA: Most Stablecoins Can Be Frozen, Even in Your Own Wallets

A hardware device is the best place to store it. But since you intend to hold for longer period, I would advice you swap to DAI and hold. It's a decentralized stablecoin that cannot not be frozen by the authorities like the case of USDT and USDC. It's just that USDT is the most popular, but holding DAI is not sure a bad idea.

Sure, keeping USDT in hardware wallet is one option. I already have hardware wallet. So then the question becomes can we trust Tether for couple of years? Like with all this changing regulation, what is USA will take control of USDT market? Going to BTC, when BTC is hear ATH is not a good idea, I think. Going to fiat, well at least fiat is kind of what people used to and maybe it could be safe? I don't know. Maybe I should go cash, like real paper money :-) You see when you start think about options, there seems to be no safe option. All the options are risky.

You can stick to the USDC, which is fully compliant with the regulation. It's audited by some reliable auditors. I personally used USDT only when i wanna trade it. When i finish with what i aimed, then convert it back to the USDC caused by it gives me confidence due to the transparency on its reserve. It's also MICA licensed and fully comply with US regulation standard. I remind you always converting your money back to the fiat ain't good considering how big the fees and tax you have need to paid it. Think again.

You'll have to convert it if that is what you're planning to do. Or just keep in in hardware wallet? What if Tether goes bankrupt? so anyway, let's say one has USDT that is not needed immediately for the next couple of years, what to do with it?
I'll do that in a hardware wallet, that's where I will keep it. Tether going bankrupt and USDT will depeg is possible to happen but with the looks of its situation, it's unlikely that they're going to be bankrupt at all. So, the best option with USDT's that are not in use is to put them where it's safe. Others might suggest that if you're not going to use it then use it for making passive income and putting it into platforms with APY. Although that's risky.

The main thing is: never store crypto in a mobile wallet made for Apple devices. In 2022, I kept $100 in the SafePal Crypto Wallet on an iPhone 6, and after they updated the app, it would just show a white screen for a few seconds and then close by itself. If you use mobile crypto wallets, use only Android ones

But as far as I remember, safepal wallet was noncustodial, no? This mean you would have been able to back up your wallet by importing your seed phrase or writing it down somewhere and keeping it safe. You could easily import your wallet into any other compatible software in case anything happened to your device. Anything can happen to your wallet or device, regardless of the operating system.

Yes, I should have written down the seed phrase, but I didn't do it because the amount wasn't too big, but because of the developer, they disappeared forever

It was your mistake to begin with Secondly, no, the developers did not disappear forever. The app was updated recently on both mobile OS platforms Sep 25, 2025 on Android Playstore Sep 28, 2025 on Appstore So as far as it goes, you have no one else to blame except you.
