Nigeria is a country that God has blessed with numerous natural resources and our ground is so fertile that it grows almost any kind of crop that is being planted in it.
As much as i know, their is no resources that can generate revenue like agriculture, because in every day of our lives, we need this products to live life and look strong and healthy.
Nigerian and Nigeria government should give concern to agriculture, because we have all it takes to engage massively in commercial farming and make exploit.

To be successful in agriculture, our government should take it as a point of duty to develop the agricultural sector and give aid to commercial and mechanize farmers, to do this, government should empower farmers by giving them credit facilities, and make sure the roads to these farms are motorable to enable easy transaction of these farm produce to the market.

Today in Nigeria, it seems the attention of our government is only concentrated in oil and gas sector when their are other things that can help in the development of the country.
The value of agriculture can never be over emphasized, because it will help to reduce food scarcity and boost employment rate in the country.

I will love to hear from you people concerning this matter relating to agriculture.

If the Nigerian government can dedicate a good potion of its resources allocated to Agriculture to Niger State and set up a strong mechanism that will allow the Agricultural value chain ecosystem to function effectively, we will be swimming in money, our economy will be far richer than it is and a lot of skilled and unskilled people will have jobs to do.

Niger State alone with the large expanse of land amounting to 73,000 square kilometers has more than enough fertile land to feed the whole country on different varieties of crops but they will don't do. A state like Kebbi has the capacity to feed the country with rice looking at the tons of rice capacity it has to produce. Zamfara has enough gold and precious stones if properly explored to sell, make good business with it and feed the nation with it and so many other more to mention.

But no, our leaders due to their selfish interest will not allow themselves to see the good side of these things. They want to accumulate the kind of wealth that will feed their 100 generations to come therefore they are not tired of moving public resources to their private pockets.

Before crude oil was discovered in oloibiri bayelsa state by shell bp in 1956, agriculture activities was the major source of income for all Nigerian's then and they where doing perfectly well with it. After the discovery of crude oil the economic system of Nigeria diversified from its main source of living to crude oil transactions leading to negligence in agricultural activities then putting more concentration on crude which is equal to the task but with more harmful disadvantages to the environment. Apart from environmental pollution, the destruction of the ozone layer by constant gas flaring and other challenges identified after carring out environmental impact assessment are also available.
After looking at the economic importance of but agricultural and crude mining activities I think the need for diversification into agricultural activities as secondary system should be considered to avoid practicing a monopolies income generation system which is not a good practice.

I have always argued that the discovery of crude oil in Nigeria is more of a cause than blessing and I still stand on it. The discovery of crude oil did not just affect the Agricultural sector in Nigeria,  but every other sector like mining, coal etc. I think the government really need to look into Agriculture, it's a very important sector for the country and its definitely going to improve the livelihood of its citizens.

You are right, tht discovery of crude oil in Oloibiri in 1956 actually changed Nigeria's economic focus from agriculture to oil, and while it brought a good revenue, it also changed the nation's economy. Our political leaders now depends so much on oil, and with all the oil drainage and money gotten from it, nothing to show about that's this a country that produce oil, and it has also led to serious environmental degradation, especially in the Niger Delta region, through oil spills, and destruction of farmland. Agriculture, which is one thing that has sustained this country and provided employment for the majority of Nigerians, was sadly pushed aside.
Going back into agriculture is not just a good idea, ' it is a necessity, a complusory thing to do very quick. Agriculture can create millions of jobs, boost food production, and reduce our dependence on imported food.

We are not actually talking about the government but the citizens, moreover I don't think if the government has abandoned agriculture because when I was traveling to Port Harcourt I saw a large area of land that is filled with Palm trees and other things and those areas is been owned by the government. So you can't say that the government has abandoned agriculture rather they're not putting much interest to agriculture as before since they have other alternative.

The discovery of crude oil did not just affect the Agricultural sector in Nigeria,  but every other sector like mining, coal etc. I think the government really need to look into Agriculture, it's a very important sector for the country and its definitely going to improve the livelihood of its citizens.

I don't see that thing that can remove agriculture in nigeria no matter how developed the country is yet they will still need agriculture because we can't keep depending on other countries for food when we can grow those food by ourselves.

In wanting to build an economy that depends on agriculture as other sources of revenue generation, we will have to elect leaders that think, the ones we have at the moment, solely depends on crude oil because is easy Cash, agriculture requires time and planning for you to earn revenue, this set of Guys don't have the luxury of time, they just want to collect whatever they are seeing now as e dey hot.

Niger state alone is capable of feeding the entire country if those massive land they have can be put into use, but yet the Niger state governor will seat idle and be waiting for federal allocation, when he can create wealth with what they have.

You're right, oil discovery made Nigerians lazy and the government doesn't really care to look at life before Oil.  Nigeria was called giant if Africa because of our food security, the Agriculture was booming and fetching the government more money. Some Africa countries borrowed money from Nigeria.

Today Nigeria is borrowing money to run the government, oil discovery should have been an added source of Nigeria, but the government abandoned the agriculture sector and focus mainly on oil, yet the government hasn't been able to set up our refinery to produce our oil.  We're still selling crude oil and in return buy fuel to our country, it's a shame to be a Nigerian in the international community.

I will love to hear from you people concerning this matter relating to agriculture.

Agriculture really is the backbone of any strong economy (that ability to produce food yourself), and Nigeria has every resource needed to make it work, fertile land, good climate, and a large workforce. The problem has never been potential in the land...it has always been commitment and structure. Our government talk about diversifying the economy, but most times, the policies just stop at paper level. Farmers still struggle with poor road networks, lack of access to funding, and outdated farming tools. Until issues are addressed, agriculture will keep being promising but never fully profitable.
If Nigeria truly invests in agriculture, like building systems that actually work (like storage units, transportation, processing, and export support), we can definitely feed ourselves and even the continent comfortably

A need for diversification into agriculture and not fucosing much on oil and gas even if as it is more resourceful,  reliable and even create more job opportunities than agricultural activity but very useful if properly managed and controlled.  Some countries that do not depends heavily on crude oil still has a balance economy because they invest and build there economy on resources coming from agriculture and practice it in an advance way. If Nigeria could balance both Agricultural activities and crude oil without introducing there corrupt leadership skills in it I strongly believed they will go beyond this level

Nigeria is highly blessed and rich in mineral resources, we have so many land that is fertile for farming, places like Benue is rich in production of yam, rice, etc. before colonialism Nigeria's main source of livihood has been the agriculture, and we were doing better, the economy was not as hard as it is today, ever since oil was discovered the Nigerian Government shifted their attention from the agricultural sector and depended on oil forsaking to invest in agriculture which is the bedrock of the nation considering the large hectares of land we have.

Nigeria was producing and exporting cocoa combining it with palm oil and the GDP of the country was at equilibrium and there was no much poverty in the country, there is need for diversification into agriculture once more, if Nigeria invest in agriculture the hunger will reduce and the economy will be stable and it will also open door for employment as they will need workers on the farmlands.

As much as i know, their is no resources that can generate revenue like agriculture, because in every day of our lives, we need this products to live life and look strong and healthy.
Make I start wit ur first paragraph sef. Na true u yarn sey money dey agriculture. As persin wey get firsthand information on dis matta, I concur wit u there.

Quote
To be successful in agriculture, our government should take it as a point of duty to develop the agricultural sector and give aid to commercial and mechanize farmers, to do this, government should empower farmers by giving them credit facilities, and make sure the roads to these farms are motorable to enable easy transaction of these farm produce to the market.
If we must blame govment for lack of interest in agriculture, what about we wey be citizens nko? Shey we dey see as people dey build houses for dem plots of lands and den do interlocking everywhere for compound without thinking of make dem do gardens and plant small small vegetables like scent leaves, curry, ugu, bitter leaves, pepper tomatoes, okwuru. Nor be every little vegetable wey dem go need to make small soup dem go begin run go market. I nor dey like compound wey nor get such things. At least, we all supposed dey practise subsistence farming by awa selves to even take dey  sustain awa selves. Nor be everything be govment govment.
