Nigeria is celebrating her independent day today and i asked if there is anything to celebrate. If Nigeria is truly independent will her citizens continue to go abroad for medical treatment, borrow money from the country she gained independence from?

Nigeria gained here independence in 1960 October 1, it is a call of freedom from British colonials. If you know what it is to be a sovereignty nation where a country was being governed and overruled by colonials, you Will understand that the country itself, her economy and citizens are like slaved where they can not make decisions for themselves and when the gains freedom to run it own regulatory affairs by themselves, it is worth celebrating. The independence of the country does not mean the country has become rich. It means they are free from being governed by foreigners. Indeed it is worth celebrating. Life is about networking and in search of greeners pastures, comfort zones is always a setback for hustling. Perhaps foreigners are in Nigeria so as Nigerians in foreign countries. Nice versa. You can check here for top countries owing World bank. https://www.infohubfacts.com/top-countries-highest-world-bank-debt?utmAs obvious, Nigeria is not the highest debtors to world bank but I hope you can see even most of the developed countries are indebted. So you must understand that independence of a country does not mean you are free from debt or poverty. It is just freedom from the colonies.

If there's nothing else to celebrate I think we citizens should at least celebrate survival. Regardless of the laughable pattern of governance, neglected societal and economic priorities we have been able to scale through
We are the celebrants, and we are celebrating survival.

Those independence celebrations are actually just ceremonial occasions. I do think the former colonies are independent. At least most of them. They still rely on foreign handouts, can not influence foreign policies and have Western bases all over their territories Ooh wait, the former colonial masters even still have the looted historical artifacts of cultural significance still tucked away in their museums! Independence? Give me a break

Nigeria is celebrating her independent day today and i asked if there is anything to celebrate. I'm not from there but I'd like to say Happy Independence day to you guys. If Nigeria is truly independent will her citizens continue to go abroad for medical treatment, borrow money from the country she gained independence from?
That's sad for the country but I think even with the bad situation, look into the side that you guys are there still breathing and you've got options to make to change your lives. But it will be painful if you'll find a greener pasture and that's not Nigeria. I wish all the best for our Nigerian friends and forum members.

Kashim Shettima, Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, addresses the General Debate of the 80th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 23 - 29 September 2025). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaYQm1AtQ0E"Our liberation is bound together" is a profound statement emphasizing that the freedom and well-being of one group are inextricably linked to the freedom of others, originating from Aboriginal activists in the 1970s and often associated with Lilla Watson, an activist and academic. The phrase highlights the concept of solidarity, asserting that true liberation for all depends on collective action and mutual support, rather than individual effort. . Understanding your own value outside of a system in collapse is worth more than you can imagine... but try anyways ;-) The world is striving to be free. Don't lose hope. Don't let an Imperial oppressors view of "success" get your minds twisted.

We have everything to celebrate Nigeria's independence day because we are a sovereign country that doesn't take permission from the colonial masters before doing anything that we want to do. We make laws that governs us, make policies, take decisions without obstructions from any one. The independence is one of the best thing to have happened to us as a people therefore there is everything for us to do celebrate Nigeria's independence day.

There is nothing to celebrate. The level of hunger and bad economy made it uninteresting, hunger hit it's peak since this administration.since the removal of fuel subsidy plunged Nigeria into sever economic crises. The country's major problem is leadership,we are yet to mount somebody who is passionate to rule rather than to enrich there personal pockets, cost of governance should be reduce to make it less attractive.increasing the standard of living and introduction of policies aimed at mitigating the suffering of the poor masses are key to economic prosperity of the country.furthermore, There should be free and fair elections where citizens are allowed to choose who governor them by themselves free of any form of intimidation and irregularities.

Nigeria is celebrating her independent day today and i asked if there is anything to celebrate.
This is a question anyone can ask his country in case they were found not being able to deliver to the expectations of the people, but if we are not going to focus more on the country at large, we should then ask our own self, if we are truly independent of the government or so depend on them. If Nigeria is truly independent will her citizens continue to go abroad for medical treatment, borrow money from the country she gained independence from?
If you depend on the government, you will be disappointed, most of the African countries are facing similar challenges after their independence, things keep getting worse for them, non of the African countries have emerged upto to standard of developed countries till today.

I don't think there's nothing to celebrate about Nigeria independence because look at the killings that is happening in Kwara state and the governments are not intervening in the issue.....rather, they keep telling false stories....

There's life to celebrate, we may not have the things we desire as citizens in our country but at least we have managed to survive up to this day and that counts too. Nigeria's independence day celebration this year has been cold and most citizens didn't celebrate the independence day and I don't blame anyone because how can you be celebrating your country with the high rate of commodities, the prices of everything are so high and the government isn't doing anything about it because they are doing well and no body cares about the citizens anymore. I'm hoping for a better Nigeria and hopefully next year celebration will be better.

Definitely buddy there's so much more to celebrate for, there is life and your family and friends are all alive to witness Nigeria @65 and I'm happy to be still breathing in good health regardless of the hardship everyone is facing and you should understand that it rains everywhere so Nigeria isn't the worst country I know. I celebrated the independence day with my loved ones and we cooked our best meals and even shared some with our neighbors and that's how life should be, we are Nigeria and Nigeria is us so I'm not going to abandon my country because of the unfortunate leaders we have leading us with greed. Nigeria @65, happy independence day to all Nigerians in the forum.

honestly it is very sad because on paper! we have been independent since 1960 but in reality many things still tie us down, from borrowing heavily!!! to depending on other countries for healthcare, technology and even basic infrastructure. true independence should mean self reliance and growth that citizens can feel in their daily live for example when leaders still fly abroad for simple medical care or when students leave the country in search of better education it just shows that our own systems are weak! annoying one is that we keep borrowing from the same countries we once gained independence from what a shame, it also means we are not yet standing on our own!! because independence should reflect in good governance, working hospitals, quality schools, job opportunities and a standard of living that makes people proud to stay in their own country.

My brothers neighbor who gave birth to a twin, a male and a female lost their child due to expire injection at a public hospital. An abomination that after 65 years of independent, this is what the giant of Africa are still struggling to deal with. Stay safe, mind what you eat, be careful of the hospitals you go, be cautious of the school you let your child attend. Always be vigilant of your environment. The world is not safe.

Nigerian gained her independence 1st October 1960, but I don't think the country is independent, and also there is nothing to celebrate about it . Nigerian as we know have all they need to make the country among the top successful country's, name it *Minerals *Human capital *Agriculture etc, but we are still far behind so why should we celebrate. And also just recently the president band the independence day parade I think he also understands that the country isn't dependent and theres no need for it, so in conclusion to what I am saying I will answer your question by saying that Nigerian is not truly independent, because we still depend on other countries for basic things as technology and others, and we also need good leadership, Independence should mean standing on our own not just carrying the name.
