Why buy the most expensive things? Or branded ones? A thing should be fit for purpose. For example, I've had an Agenda VR3 since 2007 and I'm happy with it. And my laptop is from about the same time, too. It was made in 2006. Why buy something that's hyped just for the sake of it? What's the advantage? Especially since you can't even get superuser rights on a modern smartphone. And you can't even install apps except from the app store. It's nonsense.

Their hope is to try to keep up with the latest trend, which causes overspending and buying things they can't afford to fit just to impress others.

With the way the world economy is now, it's better we think about how we are going to double our financial growth, financial stability and financial planning. Some people still don't know what's needed and wanted, and all these things need to be known so that we can encourage the younger generation to pick up financially. There is nothing new about this behaviour but it's extreme to say "it kills" when you've given no further context within the body of your post. Everyone has different circumstances, so nobody is going to be able to give you a blanket answer. Younger generations often take a while to really learn the value of money and think having the latest clothes/gadgets/cars/etc is more important than having secure finances. Many people out there do live beyond their means, but if it makes them happier then it is not for us to judge whether it's a bad way to spend money. As long as they pay down their debts they can do what they like.

Yes, staying in our means is also quite important but it's worth a shot to look at these luxuries as a prize for the efforts we undergo. Looking at them as a reward will not only motivate us but will also unlock few other doors of financial well being. There is nothing wrong in being tempted by luxury, but whether it is within your means or not should be given the most importance. Pay close attention to whether the luxury you are chasing is compatible with you or not. If it is incompatible, then you are going in the wrong direction and harming yourself, if it is compatible with you financially, then luxury is for you.

I have seen some friends who have difficulty meeting their basic needs, their father works hard to meet the basic needs of his family or they are struggling with debt, yet they are inclined towards luxury. They need a car, a good phone and a good restaurant. But their family is in a very bad situation. I really hate such luxury and such a person. Living a good life from within is not luxury, you can also call living a poor life outside yourself a part of luxury.

Yes I believe they are people that can afford luxury even multiple times because they can afford it any time, any day and doing very comfortable.
But most of the younger ones of this generation actually want to live above their means because they tend to want luxury they cant afford. They want the most trending things and luxury things to impress people, when deep down they’re not living comfortable. I understand those who are trying to live lavishly. If they can afford to do that, I'd agree that we only live once and they have to enjoy their lives.

But don't come to a point that they have to sacrifice what they have in order to live lavishly. If it takes them a loan or have to sacrifice their normal kind of living, please don't do that.

Luxuries and self validation of rewarding ourselves are good and nice to have. Though, if it's going to take us some sacrifice of several months of pay and have to deal with it, I don't think it's worth it.

It's not even about whether or not they can afford it, it's about the classification they falls in economics. Is it a need or a want?

Many people can afford their want, so it doesn't matter, what matters is the frivolousness attached to it. Some people prioritize spending to savings for their future and investing, and no matter how rich they are or affordable it is to them, it could be termed a waste in most cases. This is why some formerly rich people or those who were not rich but could afford some kind of lifestyle couldn't keep up with them over time because they were spenders, and not a saver/investors.

No one is saying people shouldn't enjoy the good things of life, but one should always use their sense. It is not all you desire that you get and it's not all you get that are necessary. Future plans, discipline and content are important here.

As a matter of fact this is actually one of the things that can limit a persons growth. as to how they can sustain them selves most especially those who are trying to do things just to impress other I actually think it is very childish because the people you are trying to impress don't actually care.

if you can afford luxury, go for it but if you can not, stay where you are. the pressure to meet up with trending things is already getting too much with people trying to get any latest thing they find around them. once a new phone comes out, there is always a driving force that makes it look like if you do not get it that you are missing out. same is the case with ladies that goes after fashionable things and keep wanting for more as new trends keep coming up.

Most people nowadays are too materialistic, especially the younger generations, but not necessarily. I personally prefer not spending too much money for smartphones or other accessories, such as smartwatches etc, it's a waste of money. The fast-fashion industry won't "kill" you, but they'll make you miserable, by always looking out to buy the latest gadget, and because you'll be constantly spending money. It's a lifestyle you can't keep up.

Whether spending money on new tech products or expensive clothes is considered wasteful will depend on your job and income. If your job is to Reviewer and your income is much higher than average. There is nothing wrong with spending money on new products and expensive fashion. But if you have low income and just want to show off then spending money on those luxuries is really bad.

You are right in one respect, life is really short. So sometimes going somewhere to give yourself something good and eating expensive food refreshes you. But the most important thing is balance. Many people think that a luxurious life is the root of happiness, but in fact it is a temporary feeling. The joy of new phones, branded clothes, these things last for a while, then you have to go back to your previous life. Real happiness comes from mental peace, stability and financial security. If you can save your income and plan for the future properly, then life becomes more enjoyable.

In a very short time, we are seeing the world moving towards modernisation. If you are between 35-40 years old, then you have seen the underdeveloped world system where everyone did not have a phone and there was no internet at home. Gamblers used to gather and gamble in open spaces. Most of the systems were the opposite of the digital system.

Modern day guys are familiar with and accustomed to the digital system right after birth and they feel the need to live a luxurious life and want to own more wealth with less effort.
