Adversity can sometimes be the key to breaking chains, the following was what a member of this forum told me years ago and it became something I couldn't forget every day, it was why I made some decisions to better my life and it worked.

Maybe you have your priorities wrong? , (said MK4) Probably try working on trying to increase your income first before putting in money to bitcoin. Personally — unless you're working up a ladder of a corporate company position, probably try starting a business first? And make sure you have savings for when you unexpectedly get fired or a similarly bad situation.

I was down real bad at the time and MK4 dropped this bombshell on me, I wanted to start buying bitcoin so badly but I was in bad shape myself, what I had then can't be considered calling a job but this advice rang in my head so many times that I started looking for a job, through out that year I had to let go of Bitcoin for a while.

Today I am still not a owner of any Bitcoin but many things have changed, I am making good amount of money and it is more than enough to get me through every month, now I am back to thank MK4, not having a job is the real enemy of progress.

I am back and I want to start buying Bitcoin now, I have covered my house rent for two years straight starting from September so I have two years to start buying and storing bitcoin, I want to know if Ledger wallet still manages to keep their reputation untouched all this while, is it still a go to buy ledger wallet in 2025 to store Bitcoin.

No they have lost their reputation. Ledger is not a good wallet because they claim to be  cold storage They store their seed phrase with a company and can easily give it out to the authorities easily have access to it. You also have to connect your wallet to ths internet to update the firmware which makes it not a cold storage wallet to me.

You can buy Trezor Safe 3 or Safe 5, you can also use passport wallet. These are good wallets and safe to store your bitcoin. A lot of complain about ledger wallet not being safe has been discussed in the past here. You should add passphrase to your seed phrase for a better security.

I do not trust because that is how bitcoin supposed to be. Ledger is having a close source secure element on all their hardware wallet. That is one of the red flags for me.

Second, they do not care about their customers privacy.

Third, they give users option to send their seed phrase online to backup companies. How is it a cold wallet if it can do that.

Ruttoshi has mentioned some good hardware wallets, I do not need to repeat them. They are open source.

Ledger ruined their reputation years ago when they implemented the cloud storage option on their wallet, making it vulnerable. Many users has of course asked similar questions just to confirm so they don't end up getting their investments compromised along the line. They already mentioned some good hardware wallets for you on this thread, so I'll advice you check them out and avoid anything that has to do with ledger. Also when purchasing your hardware wallets, be sure to order directly from their company or verified vendor so you don't get a compromised device that gives scammers direct access to your funds.

Owing to the fact that you still are trying to start your bitcoin investments, you shouldn't let hardware wallets to be a reason for your delays. You can get good open source wallets like electrum and store your funds. This way you don't have to delay your investment, just continue to accumulate BTC on the electrum wallet. Then when you finally get the cold storage device, you move your coins there for better security.. it's your choice though, I'm just saying.

When I was a newbie and was looking for suitable wallets to store my bitcoins when I eventually start buying. I made some research on wallets and I got to know that ledger had suffered data breach in the past which directly and indirectly affected ledger users then.

Reports still has it that ledger stores its data with third party companies, which means, the users are not the only ones who have access to their private keys. If you understand Bitcoin very well, you will know how risky this is. Avoid ledger and go for others being recommended here by reputable members of this forum.

Ledger ruined their reputation years ago when they implemented the cloud storage option on their wallet, making it vulnerable.
Their reputation has been damaged from data breaches to bad products like Ledger Recover.

Advisable, don't use ledger hardware wallet, they are closed source, trust is no longer confide in them, because they already had a record of data leakage, there are more better and trusted hardware wallet we can consider apart form this one, such could be Trezor, this is why the forum like this is helpful in information dissemination like this this for us all to know what could have been at stake upon whatever decision we make regarding and wallet and the security challenges that may accrues.

I agree with what others have said, but I'll put it my way: forget about that Ledger crap. It would be the last on my list if I had to buy a new one now.

In terms of a cheap price range, yes, Trezor would be the best option, but there are people on the forum who don't like it either, because I think it collaborated on blockchain analysis or something. Anyway, based on what the OP said, Trezor would be the best option.

I want to know if Ledger wallet still manages to keep their reputation untouched all this while, is it still a go to buy ledger wallet in 2025 to store Bitcoin.
Technically, ledger still maintains its reputation as a reliable wallet. Speaking of the physical device, it hasn't been hacked yet.

Another issue, and almost every member of this forum (who's in the know) will agree with me, is the company's reputation, which is declining further with each passing month year.

Is this wallet worth buying? This choice should be entirely personal, as the wallet's contents are at risk only to you, not to those you're asking for advice from.

In my opinion, if you have the opportunity to buy a wallet from a reputable manufacturer with a good reputation, it's better to buy from them than from someone with a tarnished reputation (you never know where they'll screw up next).

I very much still think that ledger wallet is a great storage for our Bitcoin because so far it hasn't failed to disappoint.
The question would now be if one intends to use another cold wallet like ledger wallet. In that case options like Trezor, Coldcard, Tangem, exist and are very much in competition with ledger wallet for the top performing wallet of 2025.

In the case where one is confused about the wallet to use, I think the next paragraph would do well to bullet point some of the features that needs consideration:

*Do you prefer the model to have features like Bluetooth, touchscreen or you prefer a simple basic model?

*Do you prefer an open source or closed source wallet incase that would do the magic for you?( Because Trezor and Coldcard are open source while ledger's firmware is not fully open source).

*Lastly would be, what kind of user interface would you like to experience?

Answering these questions personally, would help anyone make an informed decision on the kind of cold wallet storage to use.

I don't think Ledger is the best option. Trezor is the best choice for now, for sure.

However, despite all the criticisms, ledger devices are still safe to use. But not the best option.

They do have closed source policies, they had problems with customers data and they have a problematic mechanism to backup seed online (which is not mandatory). But nobody was able to hack a ledger device before, and all people that lost their coins using ledger were responsible for their losses.

The same is also true for Trezor, which is just as safe and they do not have those closed-source policies neither the seed online feature (But I do not think they have a better customer data policy)

Close source is not a favorite thing for a wallet with Bitcoin and cryptocurrency users. It's important as there are other hardware wallets that are open-source and have good reputation too like Trezor. So, it leaves very little reasons to choose Ledger if you want to buy a new hardware wallets. With people who already bought Ledger wallets, they can continue to use those wallets.

It's just whenever they buy new ones, let's ignore Ledger and choose Trezor or other open source hardware wallets in this list.

I agree. This is my situation. I have an old ledger device from 2017, which works very well and I consider it very safe to use

When I need to buy another hardware wallet I will probably buy a Trezor, which is a better one. But ledger is ok, for those who already have one.

I want to know if Ledger wallet still manages to keep their reputation untouched all this while, is it still a go to buy ledger wallet in 2025 to store Bitcoin.
No they have lost their reputation. Ledger is not a good wallet because they claim to be  cold storage They store their seed phrase with a company and can easily give it out to the authorities easily have access to it. You also have to connect your wallet to ths internet to update the firmware which makes it not a cold storage wallet to me.

I actually think you're misunderstanding about how ledger wallet actually works. First you said, They store their seed phrase with a company please that's false-unless you choose to use "Ledger Recover". Ledger Recover: is 100% optional. It was actually introduced in the year 2023-2024, you have to manually activate it and go through some verification process before anything happens. If you don't use it, your seed phrase stays fully offline and stays under your control. Confusion comes from when people start assuming "Recover" is mandatory - please it's not.
Secondly you said, You have to connect your wallet to the Internet to update the firmware- so it's not cold storage: That is slightly true, but not accurate. All hardware wallets requires you to connect to a computer when it gets to a point for signing transaction or update. The important thing is that your private keys never touch the Internet.
Thirdly : Ledger can easily give your data to the authorities: that's entirely not true and exaggerated. Ledger does not keep or hold your private keys, unless u actually option into the 'Recover' service which I said it's optional. It's really true ledger faced some disapproval in the past.
2020: ledger customer data leak ( email, phone number)
2023: ledger connect kit exploit ( third-party dapp vulnerability)
2023: introducing of ledger Recover feature ( community backlash)
But“None of these situation compromised private keys stored on devices, although some users did lose funds in related exploits.” and that actually affected trust and reputation.
You can read more about the ledger Recover https://support.ledger.com/article/11022833583261-zd?utm_source=chatgpt.com

It depends on your needs. If it's just to store/safeguard your bitcoins, any wallet will do, as long as it's reliable and secure. I don't use a hardware wallet, but I've heard and read many positive reviews about Ledger. In your place, I'd opt for a wallet like Electrum or Sparrow (free and widely used), and with the money I'd spend on Ledger, I'd buy bitcoin.    Grin

In a way that's true. They are still reliable as a hardware wallet, meaning that they haven't been proven unreliable. If you bought a Ledger device 5 years ago and left it somewhere safe, your coins are still there, so it has done its job in securing people's savings.

The problem is that with their new software updates you're allowing cloud access which opens new angles of attack. As long as you have an old device lying around that you haven't updated you have nothing to worry about, but if you're planning to use your wallet for something more than cold storage, or buy a new one now, there are better options.

Why would you choose a wallet like that when you could choose one of many better options?

The bad move they've made is about the Ledger Recover. There are still users of it but if you're asking it from the people of the forum, the majority of the people here will tell you that it's no longer a good one. Choose other brand like Trezor or maybe the Blockstream's Jade. But I'd be eager to own a Trezor and it has different models. You just check the website and see which is more affordable to you and also the features that it has got. The Trezor Model One is the cheapest at $49, sometimes there are promos and you get discounts depending on the season and trezor itself.

When choosing a hardware wallet, you should ensure it is open source, so anyone can check and recheck (verify) the source code. I recall a discussion like this some time ago, and as far as I remember, Ledger isn't 100% open source, Cmiiw. Therefore, I think you should choose a fully open source hardware wallet. If there is any suspicious source code, usually someone with expertise can check it, then publish it, and we can use it as a reference.

For my reference, you can check out this thread containing a list of open-source hardware wallets posted by a user of our forum, here : Bitcointalk.org @dkbit98 - Warning - list - Open Source Hardware Wallets  ( You still need to do further research regarding the information in the post, maybe there is information that has not been updated yet)

What makes a good Bitcoin wallet?  It should be open source, clear about what its doing under the hood and keep your private info offline.  Sadly, Ledger doesnt hit these marks.  Its not open source, and it doesnt keep your data completely offline, plus, there are some questions about their commitment to user privacy.

All things considered, Ledger is a risky choice.  The optional Ledger Recover feature proved the device was always capable of exporting your private seed phrase in fragments.  Once the comunity knew the firmware had this capability, the core security assumption - that the seed could never leave the Secure Element - was broken forever.

I think no sensible person would dare to use Ledger in2025  after all that has been finally revelaed about their products.
I think there are many more honest product around, some of them entirely Oper nSource, where you have more additional guarantees when compared to Ledger.
