I've set up a little service that allows you to buy testnet4 bitcoin: https://testnet.sale/. It's working as simply as possible. You enter your testnet4 address, choose an amount, send BTC and once it gets one confirmation, the server automatically sends you your tBTC.

The reason I built this is that the Altquick exchange announced that it temporarily suspends trading altcoins, including testnet, and that it might be shutting down. This is the only exchange that allows buying and selling testnet4 coins, so if it does shut down, it'd render it practically infeasible to buy and sell large amounts of testnet.

Important disclaimer: Testnet's purpose is to allow developers and enthusiasts to test the bitcoin network for their applications, and thus, are worthless at the margin. Their purpose is to be tested and potentially be lost/burned at development instead of real bitcoin. We do not refuse this reality. However, for the vast majority of tasks, a minimum amount is sufficient to test the network. These amounts are freely given away at faucets like faucet.testnet4.dev. It is only for a small minority of tasks where thousands of testnet coins might be needed. It is also increasingly difficult to obtain these large amounts, and therefore natural for a market to form around them. You can disagree with this assertion, and insist that these large amounts must also be given away for free, but economic reality has proved otherwise; there exists a set of people who are willing to buy them, and a set of people who are willing to sell them. We believe that serving the voluntary transactions of those people embodies the ethos of bitcoin.

The service is new, and I wrote the backend from scratch, so if you encounter any bug, you can post below, or send me a PM, or send me an email at testnet.sale@protonmail.com.

Please note that I have more coins than those displayed as "max", but I haven't deposited them at testnet.sale, yet. You can contact me privately if you want a lot more.

Tested the site with a 0.0001 BTC buy and received 100 v4 Testnet promptly after confirmations.

Furthermore, the owner of this site and I have been communicating for a year now.  This user definitely has plenty of Testnet v4.

I would absolutely do business with him.

Thank you for creating a way for people to get whole/bulk amounts of Testnet while we smooth things out on our end.  I appreciate you.

You say testnet and if my memory serves me right most testnet coins are freely available if you know where to search for them. So why would anyone pay you for testnet coins? Even if they're devs, they should know where to source them. So kindly explain what benefits there are in paying you for what's freely available elsewhere.

They are free in small fractions.

Testnet has the same supply as Bitcoin 21,000,000.

If you want whole testnet coins, it will either take TIME or MINING.  Time has value.

This is a quick way people can get whole coins without begging and keep grinding away in ~10 minutes.

I'm sure there are some speculators as well blended in gambling that Bitcoin Core devs have better shit to do than dink with a $21 milly market cap (if testnet hits $1) and that honestly Testnet circulating well is healthy for Bitcoin.  I see no reason a major exchange like Coinbase or others wouldn't support getting folks into dev territory for a few bucks.

Perhaps I'm nuts.  It is different than Bitcoin... no Wall Street.

You can't get large amounts easily. You can't mine them due to insane competition, and even mining them requires some money for the virtual private servers that need to be broadcasting the block exactly at the right time. One benefit of having a large amount of testnet is you can test an exchange with sufficient upper bounds in deposit or withdrawals. For example, you might want to test if your site's user page can withdraw a large amount with no overflow problems.

We're temporarily selling at 50 sats per tBTC. We're testing the markets and want to see how quickly they'll get sold.

It might make sense just to get some in case it catches on. If enough people think the same way, that becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

[Heck, a question I can answer] Yes. It's a different coin.

Yeah, a stupid question on my part...but needed confirmation another (!) wallet was necessary.

You've already got the Testnet wallet if you've got a Core wallet.

Just fire core up in v4 mode and you'll be good to go.

Apart from Bitcoin Core, you can also use Electrum or Sparrow if you prefer seed phrases. Both wallets support testnet4.

Exchange rate: 1 tBTC = 35 sats.

It's sad to see that test coins are being monetized. By doing this you are not benefiting the niche as a whole.((

That's just another example: when an experimental tool is touched by speculation, its original purpose slowly dies.
Well yeah, it's sad. You may be experiencing culture shock (let's just say so); as in the 3rd world where people have to pay to even spit, it's very normal. Wink

Anyway...
that's a consequence of a market existing for them.
