Let’s say it happened for a moment… what does it change? It changes nutthin. Btc is the king and it will keep staying like that no matter what happens. Marketcap isn’t the most important metric anyway. Actually it is meaningless considering that eth was massively premined in its early days. Even if eth goes to $100k it basically changes nutthin. Some people may cheer “Btc is dead! Long live the King Eth!!” But that’s about it. Most important  people will keep using btc for their transactions instead of eth. People believe what they want to believe. I've seen many XRP shillers/fanboys predicting XRP will overcome Bitcoin someday. Yet, it sits among the top-5 coins in market cap, struggling to reach the "double digits". The same can be said about Ethereum. It may have been the pioneer of smart contracts, but it lacks behind Bitcoin in terms of decentralization and censorship-resistance. In fact, Ethereum is worse than it was before the switch to PoS. It's more centralized than ever. A centralized "shitcoin" can never beat the real thing. And with attention going towards Vitalik Buterin, we should expect the worse.

That said, I'd expect ETH to remain the #2 cryptocurrency by market cap forever. It has first-mover advantage compared to other altcoins. Many were claiming Solana and EOS to be the "Ethereum Killer". But such projects have failed in doing so. In cryptocurrency market, the first and second positions belong to Bitcoin and Ethereum, and it's just fact as they are very first foundations for this industry so they deserved to be there at first top positions.

No one is saying that ETH will surpass BTC, only altcoin developers or altcoin investors like Tom Lee are making such statements. Neutral investors would never make such silly statements.

Additionally, they have another purpose behind that statement. They are not just making random predictions or have undying faith in the altcoins they invest in. As we know, Tom Lee is all in on ETH and to make a big profit, he needs to sell at the highest price possible. And to push ETH price up there needs to be Fomo, hype around it, and that is the real purpose behind his claim that ETH will surpass BTC. Naive investors will fall into that trap.

So what he's saying basically is that Ethereum with all the tokens on its chain could in theory flip Bitcoin alone. Currently not even that is close. All tokens on ETH together are less valuable than ETH itself.

And ETH has not really a unique selling proposition anymore. Any reasonably big altcoin like Solana, Toncoin, Cardano or Tron could be used for the same token purposes, with the same tradoffs (heavily premined, PoS instead of PoW, slightly inflationary).

You are right.  I understand why there is an excitement for whether other Cryptocurrencies can ever 'conquer the King' but Market Cap says nothing really.

For example.  If you ask me I would say the chances are HIGH that a centralized or partially centralized Cryptocurrency can reach a higher Market Cap than Bitcoin simply because I can not see why institutions would support Bitcoin more.  This still makes Bitcoin just as powerful and useful as it is now, it does not mean it lost the fight.

In fact.  Even if XRP, Ethereum, Doge Coin and 10 more other Shitcoins surpassed Bitcoin, it would still mean nothing.  Bitcoin still does its thing, it would not demoralize me in any way.  Yet I have to agree it is entertaining to see a 'battle' between the top two every market cycle.

I agree that ETH has no chance of flipping against Bitcoin. Because bitcoin is unique and different from the rest of the market, including ETH.

But I am not sure about ETH, because the competition in the altcoin market is fierce, and just a little carelessness or a small mistake, it can be flipped by other altcoins. Like what's happening. While ETH is still at the top of the altcoin market, look at how slow and stagnant it is compared to BNB and SOL this cycle. BNB and SOL have hit new ATHs but ETH is still stuck in place. If ETH does not improve its performance soon and regain investor confidence, sooner or later it will be flipped by Bnb, sol or even XRP.
