Why does ‘almost winning’ mean more than losing?

I've never played, but I find it very interesting how "almost winning" seems to affect players so much. Even without direct experience, you can see that this feeling of "nearly missing out" affects one's emotions and can make one try again, seeking that victory that almost happened.

I wonder: could it be this expectation that keeps people more engaged in the game than actual victories?

Every time we gamble and we encounter a near miss (e.g. almost a jackpot in slots, etc.), there's this mixed feeling of both happiness and dread where we would chase it until we make it. Unfortunately, we develop this mindset that near misses are equivalent to a jackpot that we can repeatedly encounter once again.

The problem is- what if the gambling casino intentionally made that system for us to continue gambling? We have to somehow draw a huge boundary between continuing on gambling vs acceptance. The more we chase for that huge jackpot due to a "almost winning" encounter, the more harm it will bring in the long run.

I don't see this as a near-win; I only see defeat or victory, and regardless of which option I see, I don't change my strategy or bankroll management. In other words, I don't chase losses; I don't get sad when I lose. I see gambling as just fun and nothing more. It's a part of it, a lot of gamblers gamble because they want to win, get entertained, etc... but yeah, there are also gamblers who get more engaged in gambling by chasing that "almost win". In some way, I get what they feel. I mean, there is something satisfying about finally getting that win after almost getting it. In the end, "near misses" are just a loss, which is what a lot of gamblers should consider it.

You feel lucky when you win, and then when you almost win, there is the feeling that your luck is close and you only need to try again. I feel that is the expectation that keeps people gambling.

When you win, you may actually just want to take your win, celebrate it and not gamble anymore for that day until next time, but when you almost win, you will want to try gambling again and that keeps you going.

Experience will indeed give you more insights on what one really experiences in front of gambling. Because if you will read all those texts, I don't think you will understand the emotion of gamblers. For most gamblers here, I would say, we already experienced a lot of losses more than winnings. So you already know the drill!

Possibly. When near victories and wins have come, we tend to keep on doing more because we're 'almost' there. And it's understandable why gamblers continue to gamble even if it's already out of their budget with having this kind of experience, it keeps them going on and trying one more time and maybe that luck is going to hit them with it. It's a way to trigger us emotionally when we should have stopped already but because of that experience, our brains are telling us to do just one more thing and maybe that it's going to be a win next until it becomes a cycle and loses us more money.

This is the truth,  but gamblers will always give reasons why they lost. That is when you will hear them saying things like "I would have won if not for this or that". You are correct. The word almost winning would make sense for a skill based sport where you are improving and the experience from the last game would make your next game better. Like an underdog football team playing against a better team. With enough exposure and improvements from individual players and team as a whole, they could one day come victorious.
But using of the word "nearly winning" on a luck based game where the upcoming result has no relation to the previous ones, you are just increasing your expectation of win and going towards a revenge betting zone where you could lose it all. Like aiming for a high multiplier in dice and losing with a small fraction. It may look close but its only the win or lose that matter, the next dice roll or every of them afterwards are not affected by your last roll or any of the rolls that are coming.

There is absolutely no need for regrets.  This only shows how unpredictable gambling can be. If the loss hurts, the gambler should take a break and come back to gambling when he feels renewed and can laugh over the losses incurred the other day. That is how gambling is supposed to be instead of chasing losses
