Rozier allegedly tipped off bettors that he would leave a game early due to injury on March 23, 2023, while he played for the Charlotte Hornets. Rozier allegedly received $200,000 for that tip. Rozier is making $24 million this year and has made more than $160 million in his NBA career.

I don’t think that players of this caliber that have earned a lot of money would do this solely for a (for them) small payday. Also, there’s other high profile player involved like Billups that’s why he becomes confident on doing the scheme because he has companions when they are bust.

Honestly, he is already earning big time when he is on Hornets. The level of greediness on him is insane.

That’s very sad indeed, I’d hate myself for life if it were to be me. This tells how myopia people can be, I believe back then he didn’t earn so much and so saw the whole thing as an opportunity get a free $200k, I mean that’s still a lot of money, or maybe he was in a financial mess that required him to raise such an amount so fast and did it out of desperation. But whatever the case may be, that was purely an act of dishonesty and what most people don’t understand is that the truth can never be hidden for too long, no matter how hard you try to conceal it and no matter how long you manage to, you’ll keep carrying that burden until you’re finally exposed, it’ll only take time.

Revisit the Dunning Kruger effect. People who have a career in sports tend to be talented, but they are most certainly not known to be smart people. There are many scenarios under which something like that could happen in combination with the idea that he will not be caught because he is smart about it.

If normal people with small paychecks commit all kinds of law violation and crimes, in many cases where there is not even a direct financial benefit, then why shouldn't he? It takes intelligence and ethics to be able to discern what the right thing to do, to make an analysis of the risk to reward ratio. In this case the risk is extreme the the reward is very low, thus he is just an idiot like many other players.

Greed and lack of contentment might have also played roles. They earn enough money to give them good lives. However, some of these sportsmen live above their income and would want to seek other means to make more money. If he was threatened, then he has a good case to defend. He might get a lesser sentence if he proves that he was forced to do it.

He thought that he would not be caught; he is not only stupid but obviously loves to bet, and when he feels that he has an edge because he can manipulate the result, he did not bet, but what he did was manipulate the game that ended his career for only $200k.

This is a prominent example of not being tempted to manipulate games, be professional; the fans and the community are looking up to you, and by controlling the result, you are betraying the community and your profession.

Yes He was stupid but I believe the larger chunk of his problems came from not being smart at all, surely he's not the first person to become guilty of this and obviously he was tipped by another star still in the business to cash in some quick money with the info leak. He should've learned from a host of others that lost their career that these things always get traced back to the gambler and not collect the payment directly if he wanted to engage. There are always various available patterns of collecting funds indirectly including signing partnership with a corrupt brand and receiving the same money as part of the proceeds for that deal. That way I'll gotten funds would've been legalized as a proceed from the partnership he engaged in within that period.

Only he can understand it, because to us it seems unreasonable to risk his career for money that doesn't even reach 1% of what he earns.

Well, atheletes are usually not known for their intelect, but more for lack of it so this is no surprising at all. Also, we have no idea how many times he did something like that in the past, and how much money he made by betting against his teams.

Another thing that crosses my mind is that maybe he got an offer he couldn't refuse, if you know what I mean.

And with how much they're making in the NBA, the bigger the contract then it's also the bigger taxes that they have to pay. And then the commissions of their agents.

So, there are still a lot of Ms remaining in that and that's probably one reason why they're accepting these tips as it seems a one big payday for them.

Not that new with the first ones that have done this, and won't be surprising if some other players follow and get caught.

I guess his punishment would serve as a lesson to many others out there still into such practice. He can't be the only one but for some reason he was caught. We don't actually know why he did it, risking a career that must have taken him a lot of hardwork and sleepless nights to build just for $200k. I hear players in the NBA are well paid, probably he got greedy or his pay wasn't just enough for him. But regardless of that, sometimes there are things that should be avoided. He learnt his lesson from this and I can imagine the kind of regrets he's in right now. I hope he's able to recover his carrer in any means possible..

The issues keeps coming out one after another as many case of cheating has been exposed recently, I guess there are even more cases like that that has not yet been unovered because the corrupted people are still being very careful in protecting their ass. Like someone already said, it might not just be this case of $200k that killed his career, what about if he has done other ones that he was not caught?

Sometimes we should not be quick to blame people for their actions. You can not really tell why he did that but he should have put his career first before any other thing such as this. I agree to this, thinking that he'll not going to be caught, it's an easy money for him imagine if in each games he play, he gives tips that a huge amount of extra money from his contract. But, there's no secret that can be kept forever and now he's being investigated and I saw videos being shared over the internet on how he's messing with his own game, knowing that there's bookies where individual player stats are part of their offer easy one for those who recieves tips or those who's betting in his behalf.

And yes, greed is a big factor especially to those who already experienced that quick cash being offered they are prone to keep doing it even it's risking their career and reputation.

What was his salary at the time? $200,000 is a lot of money to most of us but for an NBA player to jeopardise his career for that amount is so stupid. I don’t know what would cause a player to do something like this. Other than greed I see no motivation, it’s stupid.

We can't really conclude he killed his career for $200k because he wouldn't have known the outcome of his involvement. It is just sad how it affected his career so much more than it would other gamblers in his shoes.
There are other great people who had gambling issues that they became bankrupt, sold their investments or borrowed and couldn't payback or worse, so this story is just like one among many other similar stories we see and read online everyday.

Sometimes we can't understand the choice of their decision as a third person. For example, someone who can make 1 million per year might be interested in doing something for 200K for once even if it can end their 1 million dollar earning career. It could be an emergency situation or they could be forced to do that.

Maybe he thought it was okay to do that. Tipping the gamblers. He may not have directly gambled, but he did something stupid that would ruin him. He cannot tell those kinds of things, and in fact, they should be far away from gambling because that's part of their contract. Especially when it is related to the sport that they participated in.

Him, Chauncey Billups, and more players are being investigated, although there are different cases. Some just gambled in a casino, while others did it in sports events. This is all greed and unsatisfied with the money they are making.
