Ethereum seems to be gaining serious traction despite the bearish showdown yesterday, and with analysts predicting a rally to $4,5k by year's end. Strong fundamentals, rising DeFi activity, and ETF momentum are fueling optimism.
According to KOLs, technical charts show bullish patterns, and institutional investors are quietly accumulating, and with Layer 2 scaling solutions maturing, ETH could be poised for a breakout that redefines its role in the crypto ecosystem. Will ETH outshine Bitcoin this year?

No, it is not possible for Ethereum (ETH) to surpass Bitcoin. I think Bitcoin is still stronger. Maybe ETH is gradually getting stronger as DeFi activity is growing, and Layer-2 networks are improving. Even if ETH is worth $4.5k, most big investors will still trust BTC more. So, the ETH may grow faster in percentage terms, but Bitcoin may be more stable than ETH. BTC is still the leader.

It seems that many people misunderstood the meaning of outshine that OP was referring to, he didn't mean that ETH will take over Bitcoin, what he meant to explain is that ETH will do better in terms of ROI sooner or later, there are times where ETH performs better than Bitcoin, and this signals the altcoin season, I think the BTC dominance will also have to start falling for ETH to outperform Bitcoin, this is nothing new. I am not just sure that it will repeat the past history this time around.

I’m not an Ethereum holder or believer either, but I can’t deny that Ethereum also has potential, you know? Others say that ETH tends to follow Bitcoin, which is something we can see
and seems to be true.

I only buy ETH to have something to use for gas fees when I have other activities to explore in this industry to earn additional profits under the ERC‑20 network,
but it’s not my priority to do a DCA on it right now.

I do have some ETH for that exact reason, too.

We can't deny it being used very much so for these services / transactions and the fees, but I don't see it outshining BTC anytime.. Because clearly, they both solve different problems.

It will be better for you to do your own research and get the facts yourself than to follow what people are saying, because some people can even get it wrong and proving like it is right and when you decide to follow you may make the wrong decision. The point is that some people will say anything just because they are looking for attention. In fact, it is not the first time some groups of people have claimed that ETH will outshine Bitcoin but we have not seen any proof. Looking at the way ETH has been struggling to follow Bitcoin’s price pattern and it’s not working out I don’t expected anyone should say ETH will outshine Bitcoin this year whatever, As for me I don’t think so.

ETH is definitely a good one, it's the second highest ranked one, so I can understand why people would say that it's a good one. But that doesn't mean that we are going to see it always stay at second place, if it doesn't get better then we are going to see it drop eventually. It became second because it was the largest layer 1, there were many projects using ERC, the chain for ethereum and that made it go up that much and for a while it was half of bitcoin all by itself.

However, since that 2021 period, even during this bull run, the volume didn't increase as much and there weren't that many great big projects in ethereum chain, which means it is not looking that great anymore and could be a problem for them.

With one thing if BTC reaches 200K first before ETH can quickly surpass 10K. I think this will happen. This is the number 1 asset class in altcoins and at the same time the king. It is true that the current conditions are difficult to predict because of their changing and open nature, as in the beginning it was easy for us to read and even though the altseason has not yet started its momentum for ETH, historically if BTC is going up, ETH will go up too and that is the pattern I have observed so far.

Overall, the opportunity to purchase ETH accumulation is still quite large, prices are still affordable and optimism is still quite strong. It's up to them, there are those who choose Zcash and say it is more progressive but for me it's still not ETH no. 1 after the main coin BTC, especially with the current Ethereum Pusaka Upgrade which will also be accompanied by increased liquidity, of course this will be very consistent for ETH to increase the price.

Predictions of ETH outperforming BTC are not the first, but they are not random or baseless predictions either.

In the bull cycle from 2017 to 2021. While BTC outperforms when looking at the big picture, if you compare the growth in each cycle, you will see that ETH always outperforms and gives better returns. For example, in 2021, the price of Bitcoin increased from its lowest point ($4k) to $69k, a x17 increase. Meanwhile, ETH rose from a bottom of $80 to $4,8k, an increase of more than 60 times.

The truth is ETH has consistently outperformed BTC in the last 2 cycles, that's why people expect the same. But unfortunately, things are quite the opposite in the current cycle.

Surpass in what way? In terms of X-s or price? ETH will definitely not surpass BTC in price, probably never. In terms of X-s? That's also questionable, as ETH hasn't even updated its ATH in this cycle, while BTC has reached a completely different level.

Are analysts predicting ETH growth by the end of the year? Have you seen what's happening on the cryptomarket? Everything is falling. In such situations, ETH can't rise on its own. That is, if the current downward trend continues (which is likely), then ETH can't rise by the end of the year. In this case, no amount of "optimism" will help it achieve a breakthrough. If cryptowinter has begun, then ETH will slide down along with the rest of the market.

If cryptowinter has begun, then ETH will slide down along with the rest of the market.

Ever since ETH made the switch to centralized PoS, market prices have been reluctant to go any higher. It was close to reach a new ATH, only to take a step backwards shortly thereafter. Not even spot ETFs have been any help. With many competitors getting all of the attention (due to the "meme" coins and AI hype), ETH is slowly becoming an outdated cryptocurrency. L2 networks built on top of the ETH blockchain are good, but I'm afraid this removes liquidity from the main chain itself. Developers must focus on scaling the core Blockchain network while keeping it as decentralized as possible.

Bitcoin, although not "feature-rich", has survived because of its use cases as "Digital Gold". It's impossible to overcome it at this point. That said, I think ETH will retain its spot as the second-largest cryptocurrency forever. I mean, no cryptocurrency has come nowhere near close to it. The only one was XRP, but that was for a very short period of time. Vitalik Buterin will continue to guide ETH all the way to "success" until the bitter end. I sure hope it improves in terms of decentralization, further solidifying its position as the best crypto in the world after Bitcoin. We'll see what happens in the long run.

Ethereum regardless of whatever fundamental that you think is pointing to won't be able to end Bitcoin era as being the top crypto coina in the market, in terms of both value sustainability and price recovering each time the market goes headway, Ethereum made some level of price increase and made a new all time high after a long time, but then that is not enough to say Ethereum will replace Bitcoin as the Frontline coin in the market.

The all time high of ethereum in this cycle isn't impressive either. Just touching previous bullrun ATH and going down again. If we held ETH and bought it from previous bullrun we'd be holding roughly the same money or in loss after the recent dump.

ETH outshining BTC is just a wishful thinking at this point unless ETH can break out and set new ATH which it didn't really do.

What makes you think like that? Anything can happen in crypto, but it is unlikely that ETH will take the place of BTC. Just look at the BTCD. See how much money BTC has brought into the crypto market. Institutional money has entered BTC — billions, if you ask me. As traditional investors, people choose BTC first. BTC is less volatile, has a larger market cap, is harder to manipulate, and is the most trusted asset. Many people consider BTC to be digital gold.

ETH, however, still has more room to grow, and it is the strongest candidate for second place. But BTC will win the race by a long distance. So regarding the claim “ETH will replace BTC in 2025,” it would be better to ask: “Will ETH ever replace BTC?” The answer is no.

What it surprises me the most is how Ethereum has manage to continue to be relevant in a market which is full of competitors which try to take the spotlight from Ethereum and it's network, we got Avalanche, Solana, Tron, Ton, Polkadot and so on, and Ethereum continue to have the second place of market capitalization within the whole cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Ethereum has proven to be a good investment in the long term and with a reliable team of developers behind it, it would be possible for Ethereum to have a very bullish year, even surprising Bitcoin in terms of gains (but not in terms of capitalization).

There have been so many Ethereum killers, but none of them have managed to actually kill ETH.

When will that be, that we're gonna wake up to that, for Ethereum to outshine Bitcoin? What you should be concerned about is that another coin does not outshine Ethereum, then Ethereum thinks of outshining Bitcoin someday. Because that is not happening anytime soon, if it should. Ethereum hasn't grown big enough to challenge Bitcoin in its utility.

You shouldn't be that surprised. Especially when ETH has first-mover advantage. Just like Bitcoin. Ethereum was the pioneer of smart contracts and "De-Fi", so we should expect it to retain its #2 spot in market cap forever. Not even if its competitors promise faster and cheaper transactions.

ETH's main "selling point" is its security and reliability unlike no other Blockchain of its kind. It's also the most decentralized after Bitcoin. L2 networks often bring convenience to ETH users without sacrificing on security/reliability. With this, who needs alternative smart contract platforms such as Solana and Tron? Even Bitcoin is getting smart contract features via the use of sidechains. I remember a time when EOS was proclaimed to be the next "Ethereum Killer". Where is it now? Alone, dusting in the corner. It rebranded into "Vaulta", but it never gained traction. ETH may not be able to outperform BTC in terms of market cap, but that doesn't mean it's "game over". On its own, ETH performs flawlessly as a platform for decentralized applications (Web3). Who knows what's next in store for Vitalik's "little" creation?

What you should be concerned about is that another coin does not outshine Ethereum, then Ethereum thinks of outshining Bitcoin someday. Because that is not happening anytime soon, if it should. Ethereum hasn't grown big enough to challenge Bitcoin in its utility.

We are already at the final month of the year and I have not seen any sign that Ethereum had already outperformed Bitcoin or will even in years to come from now. Bitcoin is the one with the lead and there is no way that Bitcoin will have any traction that will make it falter against Ethereum in this race. Bitcoin is no way close to Ethereum and the earlier the experiment of comparison between them is stopped, the better for them.

Ethereum is better off being compared with other altcoins because they look so much realistic to overcome some of them than it will want to compete with bitcoin. This is where the focus should be because bitcoin does not have any challenger and don’t look like it will have any one anytime soon, even in many years to come from now.

Even though such thing will happen to bitcoin in the market, I don't think it will happen now because the gap bitcoin is using to gap etherium in the market has make altcoin investors to believe that bitcoin will continue toping the market, etherium don't have the capacity to make other coins increase like the way bitcoin is making other coins to increase whenever bitcoin price is increasing higher because they have solid teams that know how to make bitcoin to continue to outshine etherium and other altcoins, maybe they are using this current decrease of bitcoin price to determine etherium will outshine bitcoin, which it will not come to pass and if anyone want to add etherium to their investment is a nice one because is very easy to earn income from bitcoin investment and etherium investment.

What some forks forgot is that Bitcoin isn't just a hyped coin it is exactly whatever good qualities that is being talked about it and for that I don't see any other coins coming anywhere close to it and comparison will just be a complete waste of time, Bitcoin will remain to be the king of the jungle, Bitcoin will not only outshine etherium but every all other coins, Bitcoin has proven itself over time it is myopic to think that a time when another coin will come and outshine Bitcoin will come that seems unrealistic to me. Altcoins will continue to stay off Bitcoin lane.

When will that be, that we're gonna wake up to that, for Ethereum to outshine Bitcoin? Ethereum hasn't grown big enough to challenge Bitcoin in its utility.
This will never happen even though there are various breakthroughs made in the ETH ecosystem but this does not make ethereum surpass bitcoin, the ethereum ecosystem has so far developed very widely but that is not enough to make institutions or large companies interested in adopting ethereum in contrast to bitcoin which is always discussed by many groups, sometimes even bitcoin is used as a payment option in a country such as El Salvador and proves that bitcoin is indeed the only Cryptocurrency that can be applied in various circles unlike ethereum.
